Ham on Rye or The Post Office are probably better places to start with Bukowski I think.

Disclaimer: I am an old man. The algorithm didn’t send me here, I initially was searching TH-cam with the phrase “my vinyl collection “.
I don’t write much anymore nor did I ever produce lucrative work nor was I trying to be successful at it- as I’ve deleted or burned most of it, but was drawn to poetry through the various boring works of various boring poets in younger years. I tried writing as the happy, mostly optimistic youth that I was but who wants to read that shit 🤣. It wasn’t till my 20’s where I was compelled to write punk songs and poetry out of my response to general depression, my inner city environment, death and drama of that time. Now that my life is largely “boring “ I have little to write about, but every once in a blue moon my heart will spill upon the page. Interesting you wrote about your dad. It made me consider what I have written about my mom. I gave her enough thought for one loud song a long time ago, but it was under the guise of a “tribute” to the mom of a kid named Theo that was staying in a Chicago shelter where I worked..
Compared to some moms, I can’t say mine failed at raising me and I love her somewhere deep inside- she’s an old lady now of course. But as her own family growing up was abusive literally, she brought that pain into our family. And for a brief time around the 5th or so grade I would have thoughts of beating her and casting her out of the house until I’d sob into my hands from my horrible thoughts and wondered why would I imagine such things. But thankfully it was just storm clouds hanging heavy within and not a reality to be manifested in the real. We do not talk for years now but I don’t hate her. I think she did a pretty good job of largely overcoming the demons in her life but who knows really..
Lol the things that evoke the passion to write. If I didn’t have the people I soldier on for in my life currently, I’d be hard pressed to know why I am still here. If I had any advice (even as you are not asking for it 🤣), it would be this my friend- the less you can live for yourself and the more you can live for others, the happier you will be and the more sane, regardless of where the rest of the world is headed. Goodbye

Good Luck in writing ✍️ Falon. You never know what will click unless you try. I tried twice .. one draft was too dire & had relentless angst . I tried again & was too political. I liked to compose in a park that not many people visited. Kept me focused. ✌️

It's not really Bukowski's writing style without the six-pack of beer and the bottle of wine/ whisky per night. He used to drink and write until he blacked out.
Not that I'm advocating this. Please don't try it.

I have been a professional writer all my adult life. A good percentage of my friends are highly successful writers. Having a reliable writing routine is essential. Whatever gets you to put words on a page or screen. A colleague of mine would look out his office window and count the blues cars that went by. When he got to 20, he would turn around to his computer and pound out a hundred jokes. Beware though, “forcing” yourself to write, is the hallmark of a true professional. Agatha Christie, in her autobiography, said that she knew she knew she was a professional writer when she sat down to write a novel with no idea what it was or even the desire to do it. But, she wrote it anyway because that’s what she was paid to do. If you want to remain and amateur, then you have all the freedom in the world to create. But when you rely on the written word for your daily crust, being able to pound out quality material, no matter the circumstance, is paramount. After many years, the love of writing fades. I’m one of the lucky ones, I love to write. A vast majority of my very talented colleagues don’t and won’t write a word unless they’re paid. It’s the difference between a hobby and an occupation. Best of luck with your endeavors.
