    QOTD: What art supplies should I test out next?
    Sorry for not posting much lately. I have had so many other projects going on which have taken up a lot of my time but by next month I will be able to make a lot more videos. I am really excited to be working with Strathmore on a workshop for their website, which will be on draw realistically in charcoal and is being released mid March 😊

    Kirsty, you've done a splendid job on this butterfly. Love it. Been thinking of trying Arteza watercolor since I'm diving back in to learn it more. I was always a pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, markers kind of girl. But my love is starting to grow with watercolor. Thank you for the review!

  • @HarleyWithWings
    @HarleyWithWings 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Wow... I'm seeing a lot of comments bashing Arteza... I have all these products and I am in love with them! ....Well, except for the watercolor pencils. But that's just because I prefer not to use pencils in general. And honestly, just because you prefer using other products from other brands, does not mean this brand is any less in quality for other people.

    • @luciferfaust
      @luciferfaust 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm surprised too. Arteza's whole schtick is that they have affordable supplies for beginner to intermediates. It's not going to be amazing quality but I have a lot of their products now and they work much better for me than most of what I can find locally.

    • @SheenaBrown444
      @SheenaBrown444 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harley Lynn I keep seeing mixed reviews on their watercolor paper, especially on Amazon. Do you have their watercolor paper and if so how do you like it? tia! 🙏🏼

    • @HarleyWithWings
      @HarleyWithWings 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SheenaBrown444 I have their premium watercolor paper. And even though it doesn't buckle as much as my mixed media paper, I find it's way too absorbent. I'm a big fan of the wet on wet technique, and it absorbs the water too quickly to really get the colors to bleed out how I want them too for those softer blends. I mean, I can't say too much bad things because Im still new to watercolor, but it does sometimes feel like Im paint on a thick papertowel. 😅 I can't remember, but I think what Kristy used in the video was their expert paper? So I would go for whatever she used. Or find something else entirely. I've heard the Strathemore 500 series is really good. Hope this helps! 😊

    • @SheenaBrown444
      @SheenaBrown444 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that many Arteza products are fun to use, and I personally would not call any of them bad, at least not the ones that I have tried. And yes, quality in the sense of how much fun one gets out of using something, is a subjective thing. But there is also an overall quality that is objective, and objectively speaking, Arteza products are of lower quality than many of the products by the well established art supply companies like Winsor & Newton, Faber Castell, Schmincke, Daniel Smith and so on. And considering what Arteza products cost when compared to artist grade supplies, this difference in quality is to be expected and it is totally ok.
      I think that in the comments here, people are not so much trying to say that they totally hate Arteza, but they are mostly a little upset at the fact that in the video, Arteza products are portrayed to be en par with artist grade products, and this is simply not true.

    Wonderful video, as always! Thanks, you gave a great review of these products, I have also bought several of the Arteza supplies and have been very happy with my purchases as well, paper, paint pens, watercolor brush marker/pens, acrylic paints even their gouache paint! That would be another good painting idea mixing the gouache and regular watercolor paints.

  • @mariaturner371
    @mariaturner371 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Personally for me I don't like the Arteza brand. I first got into watercolor last year and have fallen in love with it more than when i paint with acrylics. I've tried their watercolor pencils and found myself getting frustrated because I couldn't layer them without seeing some of the grain of the pencil marks. I tried also their brush pens that they sell separately and I found that I didn't like them because even when I squeezed very lightly to add more water to the brush i found the water pooled out of the brush pen. I had a friend try these products out also who has been drawing and painting since she was a little girl and she agreed with me that this brand was not really a good brand. I have concluded with my own research and this video that this brand is good for beginners to start off with to get to understand the different water color products out there but I would not recommend them for those of you who have a better understanding of watercolors.
    As for your next review video Kristy I would love to see you try out the Derwent Intense watercolor pencils vs Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle watercolor pencils. Thanks so much in advance and your videos are always inspiring!

    I noticed you used a pretty thick layer of masking tape.. maybe the paper didn’t work well with that thickness? Even my arches paper tore when I was using thick layers, now I’ve learnt to do VERY thin layers and I haven’t had a rip yet! I’d imagine it would be pretty hard to get a thin layer with a maker rather than liquid and brush. Something some of your viewers might want to take into consideration!
    If we join your pattern do we always get the sketch? I’m terrible at drawing (despite years of practice) so sometimes when I’m drawing I’m put off painting because I just trying the experience with a bad drawing. I think going straight into the painting with your sketch would help me lots!

    In continental Europe, the brand "Jaxon" also has a swatch for the artist quality of watercolours, including a lightfastness information, and the packaging of the pans contains pigment information. Like, which pigments are used in a certain color. I like this brand because it is moderately priced. A set of twelve colours is just short of €20.
    Disclaimer: This is my personal opinion. I am not a representative of this brand.

    I’m wondering where they came from and how they have so much money to advertise! They are sponsored on amazon. They are the first result when you search any art item

      Julia Omelchenko I was definitely curious! I’ve only tried some micro liners and they worked well for the purpose but I wouldn’t replace microns with them for sure

      @@stephweatherford3612 Arteza has a very strange color palette (watercolor and pencils) and also low lightfastness. I am surprised that Kristy praises this brand so much.

    Question: do your extra $9 level patreon tutorials eventually become available to the $5 level patreons? I've been a $5 sub for months and i love watching them! It will take me a lifetime to get thru them all. :-)
