Thanks for the ride...I left home in Chicago in the 70s...moved to NJ, got married, and eventually started to move back. Wife got sick and died (covid) and I never made it back home. Still, I took the ride with you in spirit for sure...
Originally, the Skyway was built directly above Indianapolis Blvd. from the state line to where it begins to climb toward the main span. Then in the late 90s, the elevated portion was dismantled and the roadway was placed on a raised embankment. You can still see the original guard rail (which intrigued me to no end when I was little) just past the state line in Indiana.
Brings back memories. Do this drive with a camera that swings back and forth thru an 80° arc, so that we can see what we're traveling thru. Chicago is a beautiful city, let's see some of it. Sweet home Chicago.
at the 25:00 mark, the road turn onto a new stretch of 41. it formally went south through the neighborhood. Now it swings east and the open land you see is the former south shore steel plant property.
Coming from a minor european nation, Denmark, it is so alien like to see these four lane highways. I do not believe there is any here. But Chicago sure looks beautiful! Hoping to visit one day and attend a game at soldier field.
@@bobsemple2524 the weather here is gray constantly as well, so I would feel at home. Yes, the Bears suck. If only I knew that before I decided to root for them. But seeing how franchises such as the Bengals, Browns and Chargers have gone from misery to being competitive, gives me hope that the Bears can do as well. Hopefully Fields can develop into a franchise QB.
I'm sure you would love the big city, as so many of us would love the more relaxed vibe of the Danes with a Carlsberg! Although, I must disclose, I live on the Indiana side of this video, as it comes to an end. People in the Midwest of the USA are very polite and welcoming, the same with the South.
@@8111thomas Chicago is an amazing city. Downtown is absolutely beautiful and I reluctantly say that Trump Tower is majestic. Love the architecture not the owner.
I never drove through Denmark (I was only at the Copenhagen airport) but I drove through much of Europe and believe me, expressways over there are of MUCH, MUCH greater quality than here...Although downtown Chicago and the areas along Lake Michigan are breathtaking 👍
I remember when Lake Shore Drive had reversible lanes during rush hours. I also remember when McCormick Place burned down. And prior to 1978, there was no traffic light at the Museum of Science and Industry. If you were trying to turn left onto Lake Sore Drive northbound, good luck.
In my travels as a trucker, my take on Chicago is that it has great potential to be an amazing city. The deep dish pizza at Lou Malnatis is PHENOMENAL, the climate is very nice most of the year, and it has lots of green areas, not just a forrest of steel and concrete like other cities. All they need to do is finish the countless road construction projects they have going on, which makes driving thru Chicago a NIGHTMARE.
I know I am biased because I really haven't lived less than 26 miles south of downtown my life. I just find it, just the right size and the skyline can't be beat. So we don't have an ocean, so what, we have a giant lake, plus we had an ocean thousands of year ago. I was born and lived in South Chicago until I was 10… Lived on 91st and Buffalo, then moved to 89th and Brandon. Went to James N. Thorp grade school. The area has changed A LOT… the city did a lot of development and building of roads in anticipation of the Sweetheart Cup Co. building a manufacturing plant off of 87th St at the lakefront, but the plan fell through.
