    The 3d polygonal games that are 20 years old (Asheron's Call, Everquest 1) DO look terrible, but I'd argue that 1997-era UO held up much much better. Pixel sprites will just always look more elegant than smeary low poly 3d graphics.

    Ultima Online, was my absolute favorite game ever created. I have a passion for video games, and you did an excellent job Richard. I worked with Raph Koster on Metaplace and Joshua Kriegshauser on Clone wars adventures. I played that game into the ground, it was the minecraft of our generation. It was like real life in a video game. You could do anything, it was absolutely beautiful, thank you so very much for making that experience for my life :) BANK MY GUARDS!

    Richard Garriott was such an Idol to me through the 80s and 90s. Now the best Ultima like game seems to be Legends of Ultima on the Legends of Aria engine. Looking forward to getting back into the game. Wonder if Lord British ever visited there? I think it's so interesting too that he used to go around UO invisibly and just watch how people played. I'd always wondered if devs did that kinda thing in MMO's.

    A Ulitma Online channel a tribute to Ultima Online! The Best game ever made.
    For people that have never heard of UO, it gives them a sense of wonder and enlightenment as to how the MMORPG began 19 years ago. For players, previous or current, it gives them a sense of nostalgia. For thousands of people, UO has a special place in their hearts; many have memories and stories that have happened in UO that they will remember for the rest of their lives, whether they played 10 years ago or currently. The videos give people a window into the game they have known and loved. They begin to recall all the great memories they've had over the years; it gives them a feeling of enjoyment sometimes coupled with butterflies. These videos showcase UO and pvp at its best, not just for the ipy player, but the uo player. Words of a wise man.
    High Quality is a must 720p - 1080p and always good content to show.
    Ultima Online will always live on.

    Legends of Aria (formerly Shards Online), is now going this route . Played the Alpha version about 60% similarity so far to UO. Skillpoint system capped at 600, no character levels, no classes, Pre-casting, battle mage (hally mage), tameable mounts, dyes, alchemy, potions, regeants, spell scrolls, mining lumberjacking, full pvp loot, guard zones, notoriety system, persistent housing and dungeon, blacksmith, tailoring, cooking, food,, fishing, backpack snooping, stealing house keys, corpse decay, dropping stuff on ground, isometric view. The creator worked on UO, they are a small team called Citadel Studio in San Diego,remnants of Origin. LoA is more close to UO than SoTA, Albion Online at its current state. Alpha will be out on Steam on August!

      I quit before AOS, but AOS was actually a decent time for UO. They had record subscribers, and they took away stat loss in Felucca as well as added the skill scrolls in Felucca Dungeons, bringing guilds to the dungeons and spurring great pvp scenarios. Unfortunately with things like swamp dragons in the game, it just looked horrible.

  • @mikeyoung9810
    @mikeyoung9810 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Pre-trammel is what felt real although I cursed it alot as I wasn't a pk. My best memories of online gaming mostly comes from UO. It was wide open and so unstructured compared to today's rigid formats, leveling and order. Sure games are pretty now and more realistic looking but you no longer need skill, just levels and stuff. Game skill has become equated to levels and equipment. I don't think many really even realize it. Those times are gone forever.

Not sure about Air Warriors being the biggest - I was thinking AOL around then giving GemStone 3/Terris/NeverWinter Nights the largest subscriber base. Hearing that Asheron's Call had closed by way of this video broke my heart. I had re-joined and played no more than two years ago and though it was still running great. Those were the good old days - when you could claim you had played EVERY MMO that had been made - now it's simply impossible to sample every one out there. M59, UO, AC, T4C, DAoC, EQ - those were the greatest. Anyone remember when Mordor created Demise? Gosh I wish I could travel back in time.

    This guy did a great job with UO, however, and not to be a nay-sayer, Shround of the Avatar is NOT Ultima Online. Not even close. It's a highschool version of Guildwars. I'm not sure what he tried to do, but if he would of stuck to the UO blueprint more closely, it would of been a successful game. Now, true, considering they raised 4million for crowdfunding, its in a way, already successful, but it lacks the heart and soul of UO. Very disappointed.

      True. UO worked because it was a pioneer. Shroud of the Avatar is not original and cannot compete with the modern MMORPGs like GW2 or Black Desert. Those games require huge budgets and hundreds of artists, coders and designers.

    The only thing I have against UO is not going with times graphics wise.I think this is EA's best cow to milk.. I stoped playing UO once uo assist became a must have to do decent pvp..

    What ruined UO was development beyond vanilla. When the game first came out it was perfect. Then EverQuest screwed the genre forever with instances and levels.

    Please Ultima IV remake. The game is so dated I cannot play it like it is now. and the NES version is not a good port.
