Sounds like a torquey beast! I agree that used bikes can be a great experience! My son Joe started at $100 for the XT350 then had to split the cases to replace bearing. We have now cleaned carb new battery and brakes. He is so happy and has learned so much! It's a great bike!
Good points on the bike buy/build options Damon. I see it this way, you may spend a couple thousand on bringing a basket case bike back to life but it is very therapeutic so in the long run its cheaper than therapy and you have something to show for it in the end. Now if we could all just build them to be as awesome as your builds people would have no reason to buy new. Having ridden Katsumi, and seen Kalani's bike as you were finishing it up I can tell your other followers your bikes run every bit as good as they look. One note, hopefully everyone who watched caught on to you not stopping in the dry grass. I don't think alot of people realize how easy a fire could start from a hot pipe in contact with dry foliage. We should also check regularly to remove sticks, grass and brush that sometime gets caught up on our bikes to also help prevent fires from starting. Awesome vid, thanks buddy!! 🤘😎🤘
Plenty of mint condition toys out there that are used. I also really love learning new stuff and get excited over the challenge of having to wrench on stuff, find and figure out the problem and fix it. Destroyed or sometimes even free stuff is always great fun too. You can build the machine exactly how you want it and pay for parts as you go to avoid debt. I've still got to wrench on the free 4 wheeler I was given because the previous owner couldn't get it to run. A new battery, a simple carb cleaning job and a new carb kit and she started right up. By far the most disgusting carb ever known to man kind! Obviously there's more to do but a few basic things and she started right up. Point is folks, one man's garbage is another man's treasure sometimes. So don't be afraid to pick up someone's destroyed toy/s sometime. Challenge yourself, learn new stuff, spend time with your friends and family tinkering in the garage, let your tool collection get a little bigger (buy extra 10mm sockets!) and enjoy the process. Thanks to the great wizard, Mr D, for allowing me to annoy the crap out of him many many many times in his garage over the years of projects. I tried to pay attention and learn as much as possible and it's been laying off lately. Here's to the many future projects and lost 10mm sockets.... *farts*
I mostly buy in between used and destroyed. Usually can get them super cheap. Have a few bikes with blown engines on the backburner, but they've got tons of aftermarket upgrades (exhaust, triple clamps, suspension, internals, etc.). I keep telling people how great they'll look in a few years 🤣.
I have purchased new, used and destroyed and loved most of them. My current KTM 250SX was a destroyed bike. Now it is an amazing trail bike - took a few years :-) Another reason people purchase new is financing. From a monthly payment standpoint, a new KTM is cheaper when a used bike. Not a good reason to get new but sadly for a lot of people just can't wait while they save.
Thats a great point, and from your financial accounting background, would be good advice for people getting started, one could just start with a beater and grow some equity instead of going into heavy debt....
A great way to truly enjoy motorcycling. Especially with a parent handing it on to a kid. I think the motorcycle maintenance plan has divorced the rider from the sport. The last house move I gave away all my spare parts boxes. Haven't touched them in years. I only have the time to ride at this point. I miss it. 😎👍
13mins... thats what really puts me off the usa. Here, I would not hesitate to ride up to someone and ask if I can take some photos. I might half expect them to bell me to piss off... but I wouldnt be worried about them shooting me.
I think Im a little biased too.... Rojo is a cop, so deals with the dregs, and Is more paranoid than I, but I hear the stories.... And, the drugs.... get back out in the hidden deep, and someone jacked up with a gun.... man dude.... it's on my mind more than it should be probably....
This can be the wild west out here in the middle of nowhere, where bad people could hideout, when you have your child with you it's just smart not to take chances of any kind. Also, it's not considered polite to bike up into someone's campsite. The good thing about the USA is that we can still defend ourselves against insurmountable odds.
You are way more likely to get flattened by a teenager behind the wheel posting to Instagram at 70mph than you are getting shot by some crazed dude in the desert.
Great discussion vid and great points! Curious if you think the Lectron Carb would compliment that 470 kit as well as the Keihin or if you have had any experience with them?
Hi man, I've watched all your Playlist, graet knowledge. I want your advice. I did understood that my sort of bike is not avaliable stock. I'm riding a dr200, graet bike. But on those long rides on 45 mph5on the freeway, I feel miserable. From the other hand, the dr650 that I've tried, was so havey to pick up from the ditch, so I decided that I'm not doing that again. I've tried the drz and it still felt very havey. And not comfortable crusing on the highway above 65. Then I tried a klx 250. The weight was OK. But no power.. So both wasn't that improvement that I was searching for. So my question, are the klx351 are the answer? Or drz 434? If I want to stay safe with a reliable engine, because I'm doing a lot of miles. Are you have other suggestions? P.S. in my thinking I dont mind changing sprokets to 16/39 for example, since I'm not a sporty guy, I don't need more power offroad than my dr 200, just wish for ability to cruise on 80 mph with the traffic. Thanks a lot. I'm asking you since you're the guy out of the box, creative and knowledgeable.
@@rethinking-h8k The Yamaha WR250R ( not F) has a 6th gear, but is still underpowered in my opinion ( unless modified into a 310cc, then it's a fantastic dualsport) which leaves the KTM 350 and other models up to the 500, all of which have a 6th gear, and are very light, but expensive.
@@MrDuhfactor so, are the klx351 can be the sweet spot? Or should I get the drz434, for more power? Would you recommend the wr310 over those 2? From your experience those ktm are capable for going to big miles? How are the 2 strokes? I did have a n mz300 that was very reliable, I wish I can get a new reliable 2 stroke.. Are the 470 was proved reliable?
Looking to get back in to bikes, I have a little mechanical knowledge but not keen on engine work as I have limited experience so would a 2 stroke or an air cooled 4 stroke be the better starting place?
2 strokes are more simple, but if you can read and follow a manual, dont be afraid of a 4 stroke.... the air cooled and water cooled 4 strokes are pretty much the same animal, are more efficient with fuel, and last a long time if cared for...... 4 strokes make better dualsport bikes, 2 strokes better trail bikes generally... good luck!
Thanks so much for the reply, I’ve found a DRZ400 that’s been used as a farm bike for a few years so it’s a bit scruffy I’m just thinking about taking it on after watching your video. It’s not super cheap but where I’m from there are no cheap bikes...... the world has gone mad with the cost of motorcycles

Im so glad you guys worked through that! That 350 is a great bike bud!
I've got 3 ..gr8 bikes

Most low-life are too lazy to venture out, but having a handgun along is a good idea.

Yeah I thought about that too Nerb1
So many good things about the US. But also some big differences to back home.
I decided to go new a year ago when I got my 2018 Drz, looking forward to the build series😎
Great bike choice bud!
I had the wide ratio gear set installed in my 2017 drz over the winter and that is my favorite mod .
My buddy has that mod. He said he loves it too!!

I went new w/ my Honda Rally, before that my Digital KLR, before that my 650 VStrom.. before that... used BMW 1150 GSA..
All great bikes bud!!
Not all who wander are lost but it might be a good idea to ask for a gps for Christmas.
Thats a great idea :)
Great vid and many good points!
Thanks brother! Nothing like a good lil' ramble!
2000 offer for the kdx!i know Tyler will out bid me.haha, good video
Ha Ha!! I think my boy put a "one million dolla" price tag on that one..... lol...

gypsymanjeff 21 he started with a klx400sr. 470 big bore kit, same one for the drz400
How do you learn how to ride if you don’t have family or friends that have bikes?
I am so determined right now lol
Do what I did bud....work and save enough $$ to buy a running piece of crap that you can start on, and upgrade over time....lol
MrDuhfactor
I imagine I should learn how to drive a manual first 😂
