    A video posted on the eleventh day of Christmas. (Eve of Twelfth Night) I listen now, just as the preparation for fruitcake batches are set to begin, which will accommodate their 5-week curing time, and I can appreciate the beautiful carols you performed for this video..
    Bravo!

    Exceptional sound. Not very many demonstrations out there make me wish I had that guitar. But I would take this one in a heartbeat.

      Please do. We’re in East Texas. We do have a dealer, Stay Gold Guitars in Santa Fé, NM if you’re ever there. Or catch us at one of the big guitar shows. We’ll be at the Artisan Guitar Show in Harrisburg, PA mid April.

    I have heard so many attempts on explaining the difference between Mahogany and Rosewood Etc , but I have yet to see anyone who can explain how Walnut sounds compared with Mahogany and or Rosewood…I would be interested in hearing it explained by someone who builds guitars… I actually tend to prefer Mahogany back and sides although I have a Gibson Walnut back and sides guitar and I love it. I’m still interested in learning more about Walnut on the back and sides .

    • @stephenkinnairdguitars
      @stephenkinnairdguitars  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Steven. Walnut is somewhere on the spectrum between mahogany and rosewood on the clarity to overtone filled sound. It can have a certain punchiness to it (especially Black Walnut) while retaining some warmth and woodiness (especially Claro Walnut).
      It will never have the full reverb quality of rosewood overtones, and typically sounds like a clean mahogany with just a little more going on - maybe a little fuller timbre. It’s one of my favorite tonewoods too (on my personal guitar), and I typically prefer mahogany guitars over rosewood as well.

      This was a great question. I am looking for a wood with the grunt of mahogany with a little more "harmonics" and most importantly, a little more bass. The EQ of walnut seems flatter than mahogany which I think helps bring out the bass (it's less masked as the mids don't dominate). Walnut also does seem "drier" / cleaner than mahogany. I am not sure if the bass is as deep or deeper than mahogany? That is one thing I'm not sure on. So many types of walnut, too!
      I also prefer mahogany to rosewood (though I have a lovely Bhilwara rosewood which is nice) - to me, rosewood mid dip and twangy trebles can make it sound "thin and metallic" though not so much on the guitars on this fine channel, I must say! The bass response of rosewood is fantastic, though... People keep talking about how rich they sound and it makes me want one at times. I've not found the perfect "in betweener" wood either - something with deep bass, resonant with harmonics and yet also woody, no piercing treble and perhaps mids that are only slightly raised lest they overpower the bass. I think walnut comes close. I'm not sure if sapele bass is deeper than mahogany.
      So to the other of the channel. What ARE your personal guitars?
      Well done on a consistently great job

    Really enjoyed the video Steve. Great playing, song choice and of course guitar! Does the walnut back and sides model have a flat fingerboard and 2" nut?

    • @stephenkinnairdguitars
      @stephenkinnairdguitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the nice words. This was a custom built guitar where the client specified the fingerboard and nut width. Our standard guitars have a 1 3/4” nut and a 16” radius on the fingerboard.

      @@stephenkinnairdguitars Hi Ray. Thanks for the reply. I'm just curious about the spec on this guitar, as I enjoy playing a classical guitar myself, and this guitar looks to have the same or similar spec. Can you remember if it had a flat fingerboard and what the nut width was? I'm thinking I may have one custom made myself! Thanks.

    • @stephenkinnairdguitars
      @stephenkinnairdguitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I didn’t catch that the first time. Yes it has a flat fingerboard and a 1 7/8” nut. We can build to suit. Thanks for the question.
      Of course feel free to check out our website stephenkinnaird.com to get our contact info if you would like to chat about possibilities.

    What strings are you using on that guitar. I have been through tons of videos land no one is mentioning the strings they're using. Don't you think the video makers should reveal what strings they're using so you can hear the tone they produce? Especially on a guitar with Black walnut and sides and spruce top which is what I have. This is a combination you don't see everyday.

    • @stephenkinnairdguitars
      @stephenkinnairdguitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris, thanks for the comment. These are D’addario PB lights. EJ16. They are solid inexpensive strings that we buy in bulk and are on all the guitars we video.

    My late, great grandfather (mother's side) was originally from Nacogdoches 😃! Didn't realize that the "Oldest Town in Texas" also happens to make some nice high-end guitars there, too. Beautiful one you demonstrated in that upload, by the way. Normally I gravitate towards Sitka as my preferred spruce top, but when Adirondack is paired with a darker tonewood like rosewood or that lovely black walnut featured above the results can be quite "transcendental" to say the least. I do enjoy the classical-style neck as well since most steel-string acoustics today adhere to the industry-standard 1 11/16" nut width, which can be a bit problematic for those with relatively large hands like mine that like to get their finger-picking tendencies fully satisfied in the worst way (lol). Would love to see you showcase another CS model at some point, but with a select western red cedar top and quartersawn sycamore back/sides for an interesting contrast in both tone and aesthetics...

    • @stephenkinnairdguitars

      Thanks for the comment. We’ll have some interesting CS’s coming up soon. Cedar over sycamore is something we’ll keep on the drawing board.

      @@stephenkinnairdguitars That's good to hear! Sycamore just doesn't get enough love in the guitar-making world and I'd truly be grateful to see you folks help reverse that industry perception for a welcome change.
