  • I have no idea what this machine's engine sounded like before, as the owner had drained the oil and removed a number of bolts before bringing the machine to me, but he reckoned it was clattery. Investigations to check for timing gear backlash showed that side of things to be ok, but, at some time, someone had added a Carberry crank support plate and presumably while doing so, had lost or done away with the shims between the outside of the cam wheels and the original plate, so there was a fair amount of end float on the cams. I shimmed both cams again, as required, put it all back together and this is how it sounds now - which seems ok to me.
    A dragging clutch had also been mentioned, but I think that was down to there having been far too much oil in the engine, as it all seemed ok to me. The difficulty in my finding neutral at the end of the ride was more down to my having a virtually numb left foot at present, thanks to sciatica, but I hope that will pass soon, with any luck!

    I have a Euro 4 Classic 500. It goes and sounds better than this one. As new the engine is strangled for emissions. I ditched the air intake system, fitted a lighter free flowing exhaust, which sounds fantastic, added a DNA air filter, iridium plug and booster plug. The bike can do an indicated 85 and will sit all day at 70. Its real forte though is down twisty back roads. The gearbox is smooth with a better change than on a BMW I had for a short time. I know lots of people prefer the Redditch machines and I get that, however I love my bike and won't be selling anytime soon. Bought new in December 2019, due to covid I didn't get my licence until August 2020 and in just under a year I've put around 6 thousand trouble free miles on the bike.

      agreed- mine goes well, and the gearbox is excellent. a few pops here and there, and fuelling is a little glitchy, but i am used to it now. was going to put an amal on it, which i have to hand, but not sure whether to bother.

    I'd say it sounds great. Chugging along with power to spare and mechanically as quiet as any aircooled pushrod 500 has any right to be. I reckon you've cracked it!

    These definitely run better with the Hitchcock’s stainless free flow exhaust system.

    I bought an almost new 500 Bullet a few years ago and the clutch dragged on that too. Turned out the dealer had filled the oil halfway up the sight glass from cold. I believe it's only meant to show in the sight glass when warm and you're supposed to measure the oil in instead. So even the bike shops don't always read the manual it seems 🙂

    With regards to sciatica, I can empathize.....
    With regards to the efi classic 500, they are what they are, they are not a British bike of the era, They will never be a crotch rocket either, in order to be euro compliant they are strangled, and are set to run very lean some things can be done to eliminate or at least mitigate this but if you want it to fly, choose something different....
    I love mine, but recognise its limitations, but it does all I need it to do.
    Another one sorted, thanks Paul, hope the sciatica is gone soon

    Sounds nice enough ignoring the initial hiccups. Looks good too. Right sided gear change is a major bug-bear for me. I learned on a Honda with the gear lever on the left then graduated to a Triumph with the gear lever on the right. All I can say is that the gear change on the right always made perfect sense to me (even though I've never ridden a combination) and the gear change on the left was always irksome. I wish that RE and other manufacturers had never switched sides (or at least let the customer choose - it can't be that hard), it would even make me more likely to buy one.

    "A very nice ride around the block". OK yes, but your camera audio picks up and amplifies all rattles ( that's just how it is) so this engine must be very quiet compared with others I have heard. I am impressed. Oooooh! sciatica is a fun spoiler. I hope you feel better soon.

    I love my EFI. Just toured the UK two-up, 2500 miles at average 60-65mph, and easy 70 on duals/motorway. 85mpg! Not a single issue. It's character grows on you, and with FuelX box, fuelling is spot on. Not every bike needs to be a workshop queen! :)

      @@paulhenshaw4514 Maybe over-geared? They're geared spot on for their power as standard, mine will hit rev limiter in top in still air, sat up. Over 80. Standard apart from FuelX. 👍

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never heard of FuelX, whatever that is. This one has been geared up by someone. I really don't think they have rev limiters - it is more likely to be valve bounce, going by my own experiences with this type of engine.

    • @martamp_el84
      @martamp_el84 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulhenshaw4514 They do have rev limiters....its stated in the manual. QUOTE "If the engine runs beyond the maximum rated speed (5500rpm), the ECU cuts off the fuel supply to the injector so that the engine will stall and the rpm will reduce to its rated operating rpm. This is a safety aspect inbuilt to prevent damage to moving engine parts."

      Interesting. I tuned a 535 GT by fitting a carb, cams and some of my own modifications and it could reach 7,000 rpm afterwards with no changes to the ignition. I never thought the fuel was being cut off to the injector. It could barely reach 5,000 rpm before. Here it is ...

    Hey Paul, I had a big fall that dislocated my hip and the sciatic nerve was pinched 5 months. They used nerve block injections etc but what fixed it was a pal pulling on leg till the nerve was not pinched. Risky but it worked, the pain can be helped by pulling your knee to chest sometimes. It was not my kicker leg. :)

    Hello Paul. I love your channel. I live in the USA and happen to own a 2020 Royal Enfield Trials 500 with red frame. I know you usually stick with the pre 1980 machines but am wondering how you rate the UCE compared to the older models. Engine power, vibration, handling, and over all general feel. I have not had a chance to ride one of the older models but am looking to add a pre UCE to my bikes. Thanks for all the great work you do! Cheers.

    Hi Paul,looks like you’ve sorted that one out.I have the same model bought new about 14 months ago, haven’t used it much,not even done a thousand.The reason I don’t use it is it runs very badly,after a couple of miles it coughs and splutters and the engine light comes on.If I leave it a few minutes it will go again but liable to still have same problem specially if opening the throttle to go uphill or just increase speed. I have fitted a Iridium spark plug,changed the paper air filter to a decent washable,also fitted a plug booster which is supposed to make the engine work better at low revs.I took it to my dealer for a first service and told him of the problem,he said he took a look and it’s ok now. It’s not ok and maybe the problem was he took the bike out(maybe) and only rode a short distance and the problem didn’t show up.Honestly it’s driving me mad, I’m not confident that taking it back to the dealer would solve the problem so I’ve left it in the garage,which is not why I bought it.At the age of 75 I was hoping to enjoy my return to motorcycling,but so far it’s been no joy.I wonder if I could ask you for your suggestions and would be grateful for your advice.
    Thank you Paul.

    • @NickNickE
      @NickNickE ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First simple thing to check is the side stand switch which cuts the engine when the stand is down. It can be prone to cutting the spark briefly with vibration. Follow the wire out the housing and unplug the connector.

      @whenden ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you stop em on side stand then put on centre stand you get false reading. End up overfilling them . Sure you know that though..Little led for neutral and indicator works wonders too. My latest is euro 4 which fuels better.

    What's your view on the Carberry plate, Paul? I'm not sure that it'll do an awful lot to smooth an engine. Without a stripdown and check, it's hard to know how accurate the crank assembly is. I believe they do vary despite being built in a more modern factory.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think runout figures are very low for those cranks, as I believe the mainshafts have a final grind once the crank is assembled, but if there is runout and you try to stop it with an outrigger bearing, a broken crankpin might result.
