The fact that this only aired for 4 seasons is sad. It seemed like so much longer back then. I miss this show. And they didn’t even ask for a lot in demands.
As good it is to look back, the 90's nostalgia always leaves out the casual racism and prejudice of that decade. We forget that most of these "iconic" 90's programs were heavily pushed and promoted to be so.
All of the seasons until the last one had around 24-26 episodes and the last one was only 13 as it was burnt off so they could get it off TV quickly. Fox has a habit of doing that for shows in their last season or so.
Every week when my dad watched it I would wait in high anticipation to see who was going to perform at Natalie’s. I remember Brandy, Monica, Johnny Gill, Tevin Campbell, Aaliyah(her cover of Choosey Lover was my freakin’ jam). These youngins today don’t know what they missing y’all. I thought when they brought in Macnamara (sp) the new detective it wasn’t bad, I remember I think it was an unsung or something to that effect they brought him in because the show was basically too black and urban yet the Lieutenant was a white woman. Basically killed off Eddie because off screen he was the more vocal one with the demands.

Thursday night Fox lineup was so 🔥. I tuned in every week. NYU was definitely for the culture. JC and Torres looked like no other TV cops. And I'm still trying to find a spot comparable to Natalie's. Gotta start streaming the series.
Great video! When New York Undercover was on Prime last year I binged watch every episode, the show was ahead of the it's time. Malik Yoba was right, Dick Wolf didn't know what he had, it seems like Fox didn't want to give a bigger budget to the black led shows because it was still a new network compared to ABC and NBC. I think a New York Undercover reboot would work.
@@adresebyndumthabasedgod1991 Who says they have to use today's artist? On the show they had featured artist from 70's, 80's, and 90's who performed at Natalies.
This was a good show. It got better as the years went on. I liked when they had the star guests sing a classic song at the end. Twenty years ago I had a couple of classes with one of the actors from one of their classic episodes. But I found out years later when I was watching the reruns. He was so humble and never put it out there that he was an actor.
And Dick Wolf's excuse about the show being in the red (not making a profit) is just that, an excuse. Virtually most TV shows, sitcoms, and dramas operate in the red. The end goal is for a respective TV show to get to the 100-episode goal line. Once a show hits that number, it is much easier to sell the show to syndication...aka re-runs. The cast of Friends do not have to do anything for the rest of their lives. They make hand over fist ($) in residuals.
We’ll just say it was seasons 1-3. The 4th can be thrown out 🙄. I remember watching this when it came out (yes I was young) but one episode that stuck with me was ‘Manchild’😢
I remember the Thursday line up so well. Peak childhood memory unlocked. It was Martin, Living Single and at 9, NY Undercover. Then I think XFiles came on after that. I distinctly remember the musical guests and the crazy intros in the beginning of the episodes
As a white kid growing up in Surburia I absolutely loved this show. Seasons 1-3 were epic but Season 4 was just brutal. Always catch the reruns if they are on TV and that intro always hits hard.
my favorite episode was when the lieutenants daughter was abducted & she ended up killing him in the end. one of my favorite shows & another piece of the Fox lineup I love. RIP Andre ❤
They have done this show dirty for years now they want to do a reboot? I have not seen a rerun of this show for years until recently. The way they have written off Eddie show was so disrespectful.
From what I read it was combination of different things. Michael Delorenzo wanted to direct episodes of NYU and Wolf refused. I don't get it but some producers run a much tighter ship than others.
@@Supremmo They wanted to gentrify the show. The original plan was to kill off Williams'. Michael Delorenzo asked for a raise and complained about the unsafe working conditions and was fired instead.
That was my show when I was coming up in the 90s. So many memories ❤it was next best thing next to, Living Single, Martin. Didn’t know all this, seems like the same old tactic that other urban shows went thru. Unbelievable smh 🤦♂️
This show is STILL one of my all-time favorites! While season 4 is ok, the show became pretty generic and no longer presented anything unique about it. I definitely didn't care for most of the new cast members. Marisa Ryan as Detective Nell Delaney was ok, but Tommy Ford and Josh Hopkins didn't fit the show at all. They seemed too Hollywood, imo.
A childhood favorite. I'm from the deep South, but New York Undercover made me fall in love with the Big Apple as a kid. Not so much today though, with all that's going on. I'll stay in Georgia.
The show wanted to appeal to a wider audience, so Dick Wolf used 2pac's murder as an excuse to tone down the Hip-Hop & R&B music on a show that was built on Hip-Hop & R&B in the first place.
Nah, I don't think so. The original plan was to kill off Williams' character instead of Torres. They were gonna revamp/gentrify the show, anyway. Replacing Williams' character with Thomas Mikal Ford and having Torres and Nina take a back seat to the new characters being introduced wouldn't have helped.
@@errolthomas9426 Yeah, they really didn't know what they had or respect their core audience. That's the problem with tv shows. They're always cater to folks that don't watch their shows instead appealing to people that do.
@@justcallmebetty7717 That's certainly true. Re-watching the show, I noticed that they started doing that in season three. They were making changes here and there so you don't notice at first. The music, the culture and a lot of the recurring characters were phased out and or killed off with little to no reaction or build up.
Eddie getting blown up in the car is still one of the most tragic scenes in TV history

@@adresebyndumthabasedgod1991 Who says they have to use today's artist? On the show they had featured artist from 70's, 80's, and 90's who performed at Natalies.
@@Profess84 not feeling for a reboot
@@adresebyndumthabasedgod1991 I am. Your explanation is terrible.
When you understand show business. You know this show had seasons. That’s a success, but you know nothing last forever.
That theme song hitting my ears almost made me cry! Haven’t heard it in a well! This was the best show of the 90s
I remember when this show came out my dad called it "New York Vice". I remember it being compared to Miami Vice
The video intro gets me dancing all the time 💃🏾 🎼 🔥
This was a good show.
Great theme song. Takes me right back to the early 90s ❤
We’ll just say it was seasons 1-3. The 4th can be thrown out 🙄. I remember watching this when it came out (yes I was young) but one episode that stuck with me was ‘Manchild’😢
Same 😢
This show should have been on over 10 years! GREAT SHOW! GREAT ACTORS AND GREAT MUSIC!
I used to watch this show as a kid. I missed these shows like this.
Great story on New York Undercover!!
The music for each episode was top tier and they had the best music guests seriously!!!
I’m still upset that Eddie got killed!
Riiigghhttt!!!
THE SHOW WAS NEVER THE SAME AFTERWARDS. EDDIE WAS MY GUY.
@@ALEXANDERNEVERMIND1958 It sure wasn’t!
@@James_Willow and that show was never the same!
Dick Wolf treated Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo as if they were working on a plantation. In fact, they were working on a plantation, sadly.
my favorite episode was when the lieutenants daughter was abducted & she ended up killing him in the end. one of my favorite shows & another piece of the Fox lineup I love. RIP Andre ❤
Whenever i have to explain gentrification, i use NY undercover as the perfect example. They smeared white out all over that show...
I always thought NY Undercover was the Miami Vice of the 90s
Lauren Velez will always be the nurse from Oz.
Always thought that was Nina's next job 😊
They have done this show dirty for years now they want to do a reboot? I have not seen a rerun of this show for years until recently. The way they have written off Eddie show was so disrespectful.
I always wondered why they killed off Eddie?? 😢
One of my favorite shows ever
That was my show when I was coming up in the 90s. So many memories ❤it was next best thing next to, Living Single, Martin. Didn’t know all this, seems like the same old tactic that other urban shows went thru. Unbelievable smh 🤦♂️
I used watch this show it was a good show and I enjoyed just about every minute of it
This show is STILL one of my all-time favorites!
I agree, I would rather have seen Tommy Ford as a crooked lawyer or the big bad/main villain of that season not the Lieutenant.
Juicy Pop stays with the quality videos
This show was EPIIIC!!
Ice T was cold in this
A childhood favorite. I'm from the deep South, but New York Undercover made me fall in love with the Big Apple as a kid. Not so much today though, with all that's going on. I'll stay in Georgia.
When Lauren Valez Was Cast & The Relationship Between Her & Eddie Destroyed The Show 😮!
Great video my sister. You always take me down memory lane with these shows. NYU was a great show
These kids will never know the greatness of NYUC!!!!
This is a much needed video appreciate that
Andre Harrell??
Who knew??
Delorenzo was SO Muy guapo
5:36 - 9:45 R U Serious?!!
D. Wolf is a "C" Word.
This was my favorite show in middle school 😢
The show wanted to appeal to a wider audience, so Dick Wolf used 2pac's murder as an excuse to tone down the Hip-Hop & R&B music on a show that was built on Hip-Hop & R&B in the first place.
I agree!! He was looking for a reason and sadly Tupacs death was it.
If Eduardo Torres hadn't gotten killed at the end of season three, maybe the show would've had three more seasons like the first two
Nah, I don't think so. The original plan was to kill off Williams' character instead of Torres. They were gonna revamp/gentrify the show, anyway. Replacing Williams' character with Thomas Mikal Ford and having Torres and Nina take a back seat to the new characters being introduced wouldn't have helped.
@@shantbe That also would've made the series go down the toilet
@@errolthomas9426 Yeah, they really didn't know what they had or respect their core audience. That's the problem with tv shows. They're always cater to folks that don't watch their shows instead appealing to people that do.
Nope they white washed the show so bad it wasn't going to be the same
@@justcallmebetty7717 That's certainly true. Re-watching the show, I noticed that they started doing that in season three. They were making changes here and there so you don't notice at first. The music, the culture and a lot of the recurring characters were phased out and or killed off with little to no reaction or build up.
I was looking forward to this show coming back to TV, because other than east New York, I can’t take another episode of blue bloods
One of the best shows ever. Even as a kid I loved it
