Stabilize Your RED RAW Footage Using Gyro Metadata in DaVinci Resolve! Gyroflow Settings Tutorial

- Learn how to stabilize the REDCODE RAW footage from your RED DSMC3 camera, with gimbal-like results! The footage was shot on a RED Komodo-X using a Tokina 11-16mm ATX-i lens, and stabilized using Gyroflow 1.5.2
Gyroflow is a brilliant, and FREE, open-source software that stabilizes your footage using the gyroscopic data that is captured in-camera. This will net you the most accurate possible stabilization results, as well as giving you a plethora of options for precise control over the output image.
There was no real consideration given to lighting, grading, or any advanced composition in this scene as the exercise was purely intended to test the stabilization results only.
I am in no way affiliated with Gyroflow, and these opinions are entirely my own. This tool is just so useful though, that I wanted to share my experiences with it.

Is there anything you do before ingesting to gyroflow? RED has folder structures with multiple R3D files within, I don't see any options of uploading span clips within gyro flow.
I see that you ingested a single file. Do I just select the first one in the folder? Are you transcoding perhaps? Can't find any info about this.
No matter what I try, the preview doesn't show any stabilization.. Any idea?
Any chance to stabilise dsmc2 cameras? There is gyro data in the footage but i haven't figured out how to use it 😞
Hello, I am a user from Asia. I have seen your video, but I don’t know why the format of the video I imported is different from yours. What I can confirm is that I imported R3D and mine is the same video. When the folder is opened, it is divided into many sections. Unlike your video, which is complete, I don’t know what the problem is?
hey friend, quick question. Since the komodo has gyro data in the metadata, why do we need to still hit auto sync? i thought that was a feature only for when the gyro and camera data were separate.
Really, I'm also trying to understand the importance of processing resolution, optical flow method, and pose method. I'd use them more, but it seems like gyroflow is defaulting to my integrated GPU instead of my nvida GPU on my laptop. Sad time

Thank you for this great tutorial! However I am struggling a bit when creating the lens profile , since R3D RAW files are splitted in multiple clips. How can you load and analyze the multiple R3D RAW clips when creating the lens profile?
Hi @B1TN3RD - Gyroflow will automatically concatenate (join) the R3D file segments. So when you open the "Drop Video File Here" just go to the folder where your source footage is and then Shift+select all of the R3D segments from the same clip and they automatically be joined in Gyroflow. @@gregnewland2651 I tried that however it is analyzing all the videos, but the indicator for the # of usable images and the backprojection errors don‘t change after the analysis of the first clip. Is that normal?
Same problem here. It does not join my R3D clips for calibrate lens profile too. I have to set very low quality and make a quickly shot for calibration footage @@B1TN3RD
Quick question, you selected 4K, if you are using 6K footage from the Komodo, can you also select 6K?
4K is what I select for the processing resolution of the synchronization process. You can absolutely select "Full" if you want the synchronization to use the entire resolution of the footage but, in my experience, there are no noticeable gains in stability results, but longer processing times. I'd definitely not recommending going less than 4K, but as this is for the synchronization calculations themselves 4K has work well for me. Your mileage may vary though, so I'd suggest trying both and seeing what works best for your footage. *Edited comment to correct mistake.

I know how it is to make videos, then just stop. But.. if you're ever up to making that lens profile video.. we are clearly here for it! 😂
First half of this video: "Awesome, this is incredible, about time, yay" Second half of video: as I fatigue watching someone render things as if its me doing it... "ill just pony up 1K for a gimbal."
It's definitely not a replacement for a trusty gimbal, but it's nice to add another option if you are using a larger rig that isn't gimbal-friendly, or if you just had some handheld footage that just needed some slight stabilization. An extra way to massage footage, if needed. :)
