  • Well, here's the video some of you have been waiting for! That's right, we got a new route bus for this year!
    1607, the 2005 Blue Bird Vision I got to ride for my first three years of high school, was pulled from service over the summer. The school district has a policy stating that buses must be pulled after they turn 10 years old. I think there's some exceptions to this policy, but sadly 1607's school bus service years were over. Since 2013, Illinois Central was dumping a lot of money into that bus, since it had many problems. It still did have periodic problems when they pulled it. They were considering keeping 1607 in the lot for use as an air brake training bus, being the only conventional air brake unit at the West Chicago yard, but they decided to just sell it. My bus driver informed me it was sold to a church, so it's getting put to great use. I will miss all the good memories I had in that bus, that's for sure.
    Over the summer, the West Chicago yard of Illinois Central School Bus, which was only 3 years old, was shut down. All West Chicago buses and most of the drivers and staff were moved over to Carol Stream. While most of the West Chicago drivers kept their original buses, my driver, obviously, did not.
    My driver was assigned bus 2866, a Carol Stream bus that was being used a spare. My driver was one of the few Wheaton drivers who got a Carol Stream bus. 2866 is a 2010 International CE. 2010 is on the registration, but it was actually manufactured in 2008, according to the stickers and plate in the bus. As of just recently, this bus now sports a brand new Cummins engine, which I really like. Over the summer, a mechanic blew the MaxxForce that was in it, so an engine swap was performed. This bus has a yellow roof, gray seats, hydraulic brakes, incandescent lights (except for the rear turn signals, which are LED), incandescent stop arm, a 16-lamp Doran exterior light monitor, camera system, a Panasonic radio entertainment system, and a Kenwood NEXEDGE NX-800 two-way radio.
    The fact it has a Cummins definitely makes this 2010 unique.
    Also, you may notice the turn signals do not flash on the light monitor. As I also mentioned, the rear turn signals on this bus are LED, and these light monitors cannot handle LED lights, since they don't have a high enough resistance. If your bus uses LED lights, you must order a special light monitor board from Doran which supports LEDs.
    Finally, you know I have to get into the two-way radio. Like many of the other buses, it is a Kenwood NX-800H, mounted in a very unique way which I have seldom seen before. Because of the light monitor, the radio on this bus is mounted on the side above the driver's window, facing straight down, with the microphone clip right below, easy for the driver to reach. This company does use FleetSync PTT ID on their radios, and this is one of the few radios that actually has its own FleetSync ID, which is 1113600.

    That really is quite a unique radio placement! Interesting that the turn signal lights on the dash don't work, but the clicker seems to function normally. The only way I knew of LED turn signals throwing off the dash lights (and clicker) was speeding them up as if a bulb was burned out since LEDs have a lower resistance than incandescents.

    • @WestCoastElevators
      @WestCoastElevators 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah, and do you know how the mechanic managed to blow the MaxxForce?

    • @msj191961
      @msj191961  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it is! I'm pretty sure all the lights on the dash work properly. You must be referring to the exterior light monitor. But thank you for explaining that. I guess these light monitors must have higher resistance bulbs connected to them in order for the LEDs on them to flash. I have one, and a small, 12-volt incandescent bulb isn't enough to get many of the LEDs on the board to turn on. And no, I don't. No specifics, but that sure is an epic fail, haha.

    I really miss a lot of the older bus models after they get pulled from service. In my area, there are 500 and 600 digit bus numbers corresponding on the buses and when they get pulled from service, they label it either a 700 or 7000 digit bus number on the bus pulled from service.

    • @msj191961
      @msj191961  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it sucks when buses get retired, especially when there's really nothing wrong with them. I was very sad when 1607 got pulled. Was hoping to ride it all four of my high school years.

    Yeah a 2010 from my district just went through the same thing. Now has a Cummins 6.7.
    Do the blinker indicators work on the light monitor? I didn't see them working.
    What's that noise whenever the driver opens the stop sign? I've never heard our buses make it

    • @msj191961
      @msj191961  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As I said in the description, this bus has LED turn signals on the rear. They don't have high enough of a current to trip the bulbs on the light monitor. If the turns signals were removed and changed out for incandescent lights, the light monitor signals would then work.
      What noise are you talking about? Like what does it sound like?

      It's just my Samsung Galaxy S6! I guess I forget how nice the camera on this thing really is. The only thing I hate about it is that it does not handle well in low light. Videos like this, though, with plenty of light usually turn out great.

    My bus accidentally noticed something strange last monday, so I called the district to give me a new bus, so now I have a FS Bus #2984, Blue Bird Freightliner FS-65, I don't know the GVW, it's a incandescent stop sign, incandescent lights, incandescent light monitor, manual door, Motorola XPR-4550, same radio as the FS-65 Thomas. Panasonic radio entertainment system, and Green interior.

    • @msj191961
      @msj191961  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting! I guess you could say this is a 2008. The registration on it says 2010, but the information on the plate and stickers says 2008. So I guess it's a 2010 model year that was manufactured in 08.

    I can't believe busses in your district can't be older than ten years old. My district has busses that are as old as 1987. And no, I don't live in SC. I live in Canada.

    • @msj191961
      @msj191961  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My school district is stupid. There's usually nothing wrong with a bus that's over 10 years old as long as it has been properly cared for and maintained. But no one can control the policies except the district. They tell the bus company what to do, and the company has to do it, since the district is the paying customer.

    • @TechnologySpotlight
      @TechnologySpotlight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      msj191961 True. The old busses are in nice shape but some of them have dents in them because it is Canada, there are icy roads and people get in accidents.

    Weird radio mounting spot... I ride the exact bus, but it's under the blue radio at 5:56

    • @msj191961
      @msj191961  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, Illinois Central always mounts their radios in weird places. They can't be anywhere on the dash due to DOT regulations, so they'll be mounted in this spot, on the panel above the driver's head, or down by the driver's legs. A few buses have them in other spots. Never in the center console, though.

    • @calebschnur6265
      @calebschnur6265 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bus#2 and P2 which are both 2017 IC's have there radios on the dog house under the dash

    • @msj191961
      @msj191961  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know what you mean by that. The doors work completely fine, and it's not a new bus. New to my driver and route, yes, but it's a 2010. It's about 7 years old.

    • @msj191961
      @msj191961  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, as I mentioned in the description, the light monitor was in the way, so they couldn't mount it there. It's a little bit of an inconvenient location, at least for reading the screen. The other place the radios are usually mounted in these CEs are down by the driver's legs, but not on this one.
