  • In late April 1945, just one week before the end of the war in Europe, Allied forces launched a full amphibious invasion of a German-defended island off the French Atlantic coast. In a sort of mini-D-Day, 6,000 French troops and tanks took on 2,000 heavily dug-in Germans in Europe's last invasion.
