Agreed - I do find it a little strange that people only focus on a small subset of the market in Japan. Thank you as always for watching and commenting.
Welcome back Mac! Always appreciate you sprinkling your great sense of humour into these videos whilst still making them informative and interesting. Can’t wait for more readily available age statement releases, noting I suspect they will continue to be vastly overpriced and difficult to obtain. Will be interesting to see what some of these newer distilleries have planned in the coming years RE age statements as well. Hopefully give Suntory and Nikka a run for their money
Thank you for your comment and your continuous support. I actually have another video addressing the age statement situation in more detail in the works which I'll release next year... although I've got a lot of great content coming between now and then!
Love these myth-busting videos! It’s so true that there’s much more Japanese whisky out there than Suntory or Nikka, and not every option from those two powerhouses will break the bank 🥃
The difficultiy with Togouchi in Europe is that there is still a lot of old stock floating around so as a consumer it's hard to know if you get a real Japanese blend or just some aged Scottish bulk. Also pricing of the new Fuji bottles in Europe is scandalous.
10, 15 and 20 years after they disappeared is my guess - 2025, 2030 and 2035 would be my forecast, though Nikka 10 was relaunched a few years ago, but peak production in the next 10 years I would say.
The big guys probably have enough liquid to increase supply already, and certainly will by 2030. I suspect that they are enjoyed this period of high pricing and exclusivity. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
@ yeah, it’s a touch annoying given the price points between aged Scotch and unaged Japanese. Even though they claim the warmer climate speeds up the process (which I’m sure is true) there is a complexity that comes with age I think single Japanese can lack. The flavours between the flavours, if you will.
While I'm with you with the main statements there, Mac, I'm sorry but in EU & France especially, still too many Japanese blended whiskies there are sourced abroad, partly or totally as you know, despite the JSLMA call for new regulations. Togouchi wise (between others) you're mentioning there, current bottlings (lots of stock that is not from 2024 I believe ?) that I see in supermarkets do not seem to be all Japanese whisky sourced, there is a problem of trust/transparency & also marketing choices wise for me, they should have dropped the name for their new single malts & choose another one (like they did for the Sakurao ones), too much confusion there. I get that it's on a change in Japan, but its not there yet apparently, at least in our market...That said, I still bought on Black Friday offer a Super Nikka, because I love to feel the Ben Nevis so much in it...so I plaid guilty & biased there 😇
Glad to see the self-awareness my friend! We're only human! I agree that the Sakurao Distillery could have gone for a different brand their JSLMA-complain Single Malts (which I have reviewed on Kanpai Planet) and their JSLMA-compliant Blended Whiskies, to distinguish them from their non-compliant blends which they have sold for some time. Kanpai! 🥃🥃🥃
Happy Thanksgiving! I flew over Tokyo a few nights ago, and I was thinking that we need to go out drinking again soon! Peace
Thank you for the Super Thanks donation! Much appreciated. Looking forward to your return to the World's Greatest Metropolis soon! Kanpai! 🥃🥃🥃
Well said and good to recall the variety and diversity of whiskies available in Japan!
Excellent presentation, Mac🙌

I totally agree! Suntory especially are making efforts to ensure that everything you buy from them above a certain grade is 100% real Japanese whisky.
Thank you so much Mac! Another great video!

Great myth busting going on here with both the context of the myth and counter-arguments.

Agreed on the Togouchi - see my response to Greg's comment.
What pricing are you looking at for Fuji on the continent?
@@KanpaiPlanet 85 for the malt, 80 grain, 70 blend

It is indeed! A great choice for people wanting to explore a new wave Japanese craft whisky!
True Mac!!!! I got the single malt from KIRIN was nice and 40 bucks when it was new April last year when I was there!!! 👍🏻🥃
Nice work! Glad you enjoyed the bottle! 🥃🥃🥃
Some solid facts here Mac. Agree Japan has something for everyone and that includes prices. The challenge is finding them! 😅
Indeed. My next video is geared at the US market and should flag some great drams out there! 🥃🥃🥃
I really love to see TARDIS in KANPAI PLANET 😊
I will I could get sonic screwdriver shaped stirrer for enjoying Suntory KAKU highball.
That would be worthy of The Doctor themselves!
Any estimates on WHEN the aged stuff will reappear in meaningful volumes?
