    Subroto, as you see in the video, my edges do not harden. Try to observe carefully and see how I avoid hard edges. Edges occur when we take too much time to move the color from dark to light.

    Since you do it slowly over time, how do you manage the hardening of the edges as they dry, especially in the areas of the face? Or do you keep the edges very soft for rework later? Thanks, your tutorials are really helpful.

    First of all thank you so much for your series on watercolor, I have a question: is it better to do less washes or build up layers? Because when I do two layers colors comes out nice but the drawing so flat, as I go build up layer it goes one boring color ☹️

      I had thought I replied to your question, but I don't see it? Anyhow, it doesn't matter how many washes you use, just get the value correct...and get a color that you like...that is the right value. If you do this, even though you over work it...your painting should look the way you desire. If we don't get the value correct, but we do get a "fresh" wash, our painting will usually not be what we want.

    Thank you Master Stan. Your drawing is brillant, and your explaination is very clear. The only thing I want to remark is that when painting women, espectly young girl, always pay attention on her lips. My wife spends hundreds $ for buying lips stick to make her lips more red, but in your paintings, you make those less red as they should be. For a man it is not important, but for a women, it is really important.

      Thank you Luu for your comments. I tell my students, every portrait is equally easy or difficult to paint. A young girl is no more difficult to paint then any other portrait. What makes a portrait hard to paint is not whether they are young or old, female or male. Low contrast lighting, out of focus features, elusive and subtle emotions...these are the things that make any face difficult to paint.

    Your demonstrations are truly inspiring.. It has inspired me to start painting again after 40 years ! Can I ask what type of paper you prefer for portraits.. the paper looks quite smooth !!

      I use Arches 140 pound, cold press. Glad my lessons are helpful.

    Do you ever use masking fluid when painting hair etc ?

    • @Stanleylestermiller
      @Stanleylestermiller  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. I paint around the light colored hair, or I use white paint. Then after the white paint dries, I paint over the white paint with the proper color. Very very little water when using white paint and painting over white paint.

    What's best to use, pans or tubes?! Got both here, only just got into it really. Did a sketch yesterday but overworked it. Take a while to understand the way it works I think. I'm just glad to be using a physical medium again though.

      Pan color, in my opinion, is great for lighter paintings. Easier to travel with pan colors. However, I greatly prefer tube colors, so much easier to get powerful and intense colors. Much easier to get dramatic darks with tube colors.

    I love your videos as I think that they are very informative. I wanted to ask when you layer your colors do you repeat the colors used in the initial layers but in a slightly darker value each time?

    Hi, thanks for many good tips. I wonder, how do you make the bright hairstrokes going in to her hair from the forehead?? Lifting off color? Do you have a video to show that?

    How do you do the small white hairs at the beginning of her part?

    • @Stanleylestermiller
      @Stanleylestermiller  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Watch lesson 23, how I paint the eye, using white squares. The eye lashes, one hair at a time. Exactly how I paint any and all hairs in a portrait, if I want super detail.

    Stan... you always say “red, yellow and blue”. Doesn’t it matter if it is a violet red or an orange red? Or a violet blue or a green blue? Those different combinations will have a different outcome.

    • @Stanleylestermiller
      @Stanleylestermiller  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When one is beginning to learn the basics of color mixing, any red, yellow or blue will work. As one becomes more advanced in color, then we move to two reds, yellows and blues. More advanced, we move to a full palette. Using any red, yellow and blue is an introductory approach to the beginning of understanding color mixing, and it will not bring exact colors...only approximate colors.

    It's beautiful painting... Only her faint lips (as compared to reference lip which has beautiful pinkish colour) kept bugging me.
    But superb painting nonetheless 👌

      If we focus on getting the drawing correct, then getting the values correct...it doesn't matter how many layers it takes. If you can get the value and color correct with one wash, great. If it takes 20 washes, great. What matters is: get the value correct and a color you like. Even if your painting is overworked, everyone will want to copy your technique, because you got all of the important things correct.
