It's such a great mirror to Hank's relationship to Bobby. Cotton made Hank miserable. Altough Hank struggles to understand Bobby, he tries his best to be supportive and never make his son feel like he has to change to earn his father's love. He fails sometimes, but Hank isn't perfect. Here we see Hank bonding with his father over the most important thing in his life. Trying to be a supportive father and a good man because he loves his family. It's presented as weird that cotton has a child younger than Bobby, but at the end of the day it's probably the first time Hank and Cotton are on the same page. They truly love their sons. Maybe Cotton learned a thing or two from Hank's parenting, though he would never admit it. Maybe his trauma from Korea has softened enough for him to be vulnerable enough to be loving and warm. Maybe the kid is actually a Good (better) Hank. But the reason doesn't matter to Hank, because he knows exactly what his Father is feeling. It's not really that he's happy to know that G.H. is gonna be taken care of. He knows that kind of love means that Cotton doesn't have a choice in doing what he thinks is best for his son.
