For anyone else working on this, make sure your pens are not connected to your main house (at least if there is fire). I had sconces opposite the wall where I put my first pen and the Boars stayed frightened. Took me a while to figure out that they were picking up on the fires inside and they wouldn't go into the "calm" state you need in order to feed them.

Is it sad that I’ve spent $20 on an early access game that seems more polished than some AAA titles and more content than some as well? If development continues at a steady pace, I see this being the king of the survival/crafting series. It’s just different enough visual to fill a void there as well as how simple but complex the games systems are. I’m 3 playing days in so far and I’m amazed with all I could do at the start and then I see all these walkthroughs showing me shit I never even could imagine

I'm already about 150 hours into the game, I've beaten all but the 5th boss and found all 9 biomes, several aren't in the game yet technically, and I'm now working on making my own personal base. I've already made a mountain fortress right beside the spawn point since I use my dedicated server as my main game. Anyone who joins immediately has safety and access to all crafting benches 👍 now I'm going to make a giant stone fortress in the Deep North.
It’s like a mashup of Skyrim, Minecraft, and Monster Hunter.
So much fun!
One of the best games I have played in a long while.
1. All foods tame the same amount, around 33% each feeding. Berrys, carrots, shrooms, etc for Boar, meat etc for wolves.
2. The reason it 'takes so long' is you keep leaving the area. Leaving puts everything into stasis and pauses the taming % while the taming timer ticks down.
3. Just toss in a stack or at min 5 per boar/wolf your taming and stay in the area. They don't take long to tame at all.
4. Breeding them up same thing, just toss in a stack of berries/meat and let them eat on their own. Currently it looks like you can have a max of 4 in a 5x5 (wall/floor) before they stop having babies. Making a pen bigger than that (mines 6x12) lets them wander into places and have plenty of times where there's less than 3 in any one spot. Can breed over 20 in that small an area.

@@henyourface Nope. Just throw in a whole stack if you want. They'll tame up just fine and if theres more than 1 they'll start breeding right off as well if theres less than 4 in a 5x5 (use walls/floor for scale) area.
Wait, so at your second point, isn't that if you don't leave them they will stay frightened?
@@soggyflopsterr6757 you may have to leave at first to have their AI lose track and stop being scared, but you HAVE to stay in render after for their tame timer to continue. If you leave, they don’t eat snd their taming progress stops.
Pretty much each bite of food slowly increases their taming over time, like a timed buff that gets put in them that increases their taming %. If you leave, not only do they not eat to refresh the timer, but the feeding/buff timer that boosts the taming % stops as well, while the cooldown for that timer ticks away.
Thus if they eat and you leave, they get little to no progress, only progressing for the time they are in render. Thus, why it takes forever.
@@TAiiNE ah okay i get it now. I watched another video that animals pretty much have its uses when its tamed. Such as wolf helps hunting, chicken drops an egg, and you can ride lox. Is there something beneficial about boar? Or its more efficient to just hunt them?
Sneak around them pen while dropping food, keeps them from freaking out. Also beware of fire around your Pigs, they panic around torches and camp fires same as wild ones

Yeah my boar pen is next to my furnace so they all freak out when i turn it on even though they are tamed

You can actually drop stacks of berries and they will come and eat 1 berry from the stack and the stack will remain

You missed filming the birthing of the Piggy! It's hillarious, there's a squeal of pain accompanied by a splash of blood, then Piggy appears!
You only need to watch them for a few minutes after the love hearts appear to witness the birth.
You can get a boar tamed with one berry, for the record!!
Its about close proximity, not food amount.
I sit near my boars, chop, roll, smoke my joint, come back & he's half way tame.. so 100% tame.. 2 joints

It's easier to just crouch and sneak so they de-aggro than it is to run away. If you stay crouched around them they will never aggro on you while taming plus you can level sneak
I know this is probably silly, but I'm really happy to see someone place the pole fences correctly. Even the ones you find in the game aren't placed so that they interlock. It bothers me. lol
Dropping stacks of food lets the boars take it one bite at a time. instead of having to throw singulars.

Well yea, it would be a lot bigger if it actually had half decent textures and premade world(s) instead of procedurally generated worlds where half the content makes no sense. Don't get me wrong, this game is so much fun, but comparing the size it takes on HDD to Cyberpunk or more or less any AAA title is just dumb.

you cannot compared at all this with C77, C77 has a TONS of amazing details and places you can explore, tons of architecture, pnjs and so on
Thanks for the informational video. Really appreciate you taking the time to show the nuances of kiting them back to your base and how you go about the entire process. A lot of content creators gloss over these details or spawn in animals for taming and it's just not as informative as showing the full thing. Take care!

The boar limit is based on proximity and not necessarily on the pen size itself. If a new boar would be born the game checks if there are already 6 boars within a 5 meter radius. This means even if you have a really big pen, if the boars stay close to each other they will not be giving birth. I did a 9x9 with 2 meter walls and made 3x3 pens in the corners, the only issue was that one boar still managed to glitch out of the pen.
I’d love a feed bin system like in ark to leave food and go
You can drop a stack and they'll eat off of it. There's not a spoil timer and dropped items won't despawn within the radius of a workbench.

the game also checks for wild game to be around too. We have an enclosure next to a deer spawn and there are sometimes like 10 deer around which prevents the boar from breeding. also there will spawn no deer if the enclosure is too full with boar

all you have to do is go into sneak mode after you throw food in the pen. stay moving in sneak and you will raise the sneak skill and the closer you are to the animal the faster it will tame i think. so sneak right outside the fence.

Beware of fire. I had two tamed and set up a campfire too close to them and they went nuts! I got them re-tamed and now I'm up to my ears in boars! BBQ time!

You can actually go in stealth mode to avoid the boar getting frightened. You don't need to run away. :)

I don't need a boar farm, I have about 100 wolves running free on my estate. I just run around every day and pick up deer, neck and boar skin and meat. I even leave the doors open on my house now and work freely without worry of invasions. Now I just need to work on building my roads and bridges so I can take some of my wolves with me to other nearby biomes.

I harpoon the boars and drag them back. Saves a ton of time.
What if you planted carrots etc inside the pen? Would the boars eat them themselves or do you need to harvest and give them the food? It'll take a while for the crops to grow, during which regular feed must be provided... grown uneaten crops despawn after a time?? How much feed per pig per game day? Offline time matters?
Got to the part that shows carrots but would add that if you are doing a larger size boar pen, carrots make boar pens sustainable. Rotating seed crops gives infinite carrots for boars, which hunting berries for them kind of drains on your own resources and carrots will cause boars to mate.
I just had a colossal idea. Why not make the boar trap on cultivated ground. then you can just plant carrrot around and pull one out when you want to feed them..
The boars. Wild or tame, will tear up the crops before they fully grow. Always keep them away from the crop

You've obviously never bread super dinos in ark. In ark you can see the dinos family tree... breeding super dinos with good mutations takes a lot of time, and a family tree that looks like a fence post

I feel like you don't really have to keep throwing food at it. As long as you're close and it says acclimatizing, you're good. I tamed a pig yesterday just by standing near the fence and it slowly went up to 100%. I just alt tabbed and did something else for like 10 minutes.

From what i see they eat 2x a day at this point. also if they both have 2 stars the piggies will be 1 star. I have not seen a 3 star boar yet to see if 2's can be produced.
@@kendrick5566 Small correction! If you breed two boars of the same star level, their baby will be that level as well. If you breed a 1* and a 2*, however, it randomizes whether or not the baby will be a 1* or a 2*.

I trapped two wild boars, threw 10 berries in each pen, came back a couple days later and they were tame and had babies.
Thanks for this. The thing I can't figure out is what exactly is the point, since you just get the same amount of drops that you get from hunting them wild--at the loss of the food you had to feed them.

Question for the hive mind: Travel time is big in this game, do you maintain multiple bases or settle on one? Just wondering how everyone else does it.
When unlocking portals, you can maintain multiple bases and reach further areas faster
At this point I don't have portals yet, so I have to set up a couple of FOB's for traveling. (FOB = Forward Operating Base)
It is important to have stops that are sort of secure and a place where you can rest/sleep and get buffed again. The worlds are filled with structures that can be used for this purpose.
my pigs all just found their own corner in my great big pig pen and refuse to leave it, even for food. what am i doing wrong?

I don't think so but if they do die of starvation it will take a very long time as I have left mine without food for a long time and there's been no issues :)

Dont let a frightened boar run wild in your base. I was trying to transfer from a pen to another, got loose, and it ran into the fire... RIP boar.

Not very long at all, just walked away, waited like 30 seconds ish (they had food in their pen) and then they had started to tame :)
Is the breeding affected by the size of the pen? I was able to get 2 boars into my pen, bred them, and ended up with 5 boars in the pen but they seem to have stopped. I have had the same 5 tame boar for over 7 days of feeding them with no more piggies being generated.
Bigger pen means more boars but ridiculous food consumption if you want them all to keep breeding
Carrots and Mushrooms work the best on boars.

I finally had a piglet spawn, then later in the day a friggin troll showed up and smashed my pen and killed everyone 😢

will my boars not breed if the pen is too big and there's an outer stake wall? mine seem to be mad at each other and are in the opposite ends of their pen
No they just vibe until they’re ready to breed, at least that’s how that act in my big stake wall enclosure as well

My problem is after they're tamed and bred at least once, they don't breed again? I have 10 boars, none will breed anymore. I killed 2 to see if there was too many, but still the same issues. No fires either. They do eat, and I pet them and sit there but still nothing happens anymore. What am I doing wrong?
You need to expand your enclosure and separate them. Only so many allowed in an area

I've got 2 fully tame boar, I have a big enough enclosure and I get them both to eat but they still don't breed, am I missing something?
Sounds strange. Make sure there's no fire or torches too close to them

No the method will still work. A boar with a star will be a little harder to kill but will potentially drop more items :)
The best boars are the ones with stars, if you mix a common boar with a boar with stars there's a chance of 50% of it born with stars too, so you kill the common and start a farm of better boars with better drops.

They don't die without meat - if you have a boar that *isnt* tame in a pen with others that are, the wild one will kill the tame boars. Be sure you separate them based on when you first trapped them.
Only mingle them when they're all tame. Otherwise, yeah, you end up w dead boars.

@@Kysen I tried this.. massive pig pen. Had about 15-20 pigs.. they were getting out of the pen somehow.. so I slaughtered all of them but 3.... ended up with like 4 meat and 6 or 7 leather strips.......... wasted maybe 100 berries. IMO this is not worth the hassle in the games current build.

@@tahaspiteri6984 Agree. I breed 2-star boars as they give drop rates that actually make it worth while.
I let them breed up their numbers while i mess around doing other stuff, and then cull them down to a couple of breeding pairs when i want to prepare food.
There's something creepy about this system; what if the boar you catch are both the same sex? Then you slaughter defenseless penned pet boar as they look up to you hopefully; you then leave the baby behind to mate with their parent?
Once this game has PvP servers, there is gonna be so much griefing
there's and in game totem that prevents griefing :)

@@Tengokuchi I'm not sure, but there are reinforced chests that you can make instead which only the person who made it can open
@@Tengokuchi They cannot open chests when the ward is active... not sure about killing your pigs or taking crops though... (You can solve this by putting up a wall and gate preventing them from coming in.) You have the option to let someone interact with your deactivated ward which gives them access to all of your base even when the ward is active.
Just tamed two. Then the forest attacked and killed them both😭

I like the concept but seems hardly worth the time, effort and other food sources with boars being everywhere in meadows, often roll up on 4-5 at a time. Now if you could do this on a much larger scale maybe but it seems to be too limiting. Hopefully this gets improved upon later in updates.
i agree. in my seed, where I put my base. 20seconds away there is daily a clump of 2-5 boars and 30 seconds the other way 3-6 Necks.

Yea I'm not seeing it as worthwhile either. Having a pack of two star boar would be nice to have, but I don't really need the pelts or the meat. I haven't for a LONG time. Also, farming is too tedious to feed ME, let alone a pack of boar.

If you make a carrot farm, you basically have infinite food for them
Why can't one give boars honey, meat, or muchrooms? Boars are voracious omnivores, even more so than us, regularly seeks meat (any large boar regularly eats other animals including lots of bugs), and are used to find truffles because they love them.
