Thank you for this most excellent film! Truly British to the core, with complex moral issues and the common suffering war brings to all people. Excellent actors, realistic story, and most of all Nanny's most excellent speech at the end, a lesson to us all. "A true classic."
A most excellent picture. A true classic. Thank you Flick Vault for bringing us this little gem. As a Yank in the States I've only just begun to discover British Cinema and have totally fallen in love with it.

Wow! Like a number of comments alluded too, this movie reminds us greatly of Hollywood's "Best Years of our Lives". I really loved the role of the nanny who was the same actress that played the nanny/servant in William Wyler's "Wuthering Heights". "The Years Between" is a beautiful film with righteous messages of hope for all that have the discipline and courage to endure it.
Painful movie, but so good at the same time. Adored Michael Redgrave in his role, his understanding of the character and the trials he went through and sacrifices he made, the edges of insanity and of passion that got him through it, just barely. I'm glad they found each other again in the end.
This is a really great movie. It’s representative of what occurred in many families (sadly).
I haven’t seen it in years. Thanks for posting.
I sure wish someone would find the movie “The Holly and the Ivy” too.
I was just thinking about The Holly and the Ivy. I’m a fan!
Me too, I’ve been looking for this film for years.
There are a few radio plays of that on YT. Not the same I know.
I never heard of that movie I looked it up and now I have to see it.
Excellent movie. It's very moving, the emotional upheaval on every character, is superb.
A very insightful film, and brilliantly acted. Reminds me somewhat of "The Best Years of Their Lives".
Dame Flora Robson was one of the finest actresses ever to grace the stage or screen. The only time I saw her on stage was in The Importance of Being Earnest, at The Haymarket in 1968.
How very much I envy your seeing her then in 1968…my appreciation alas was very far in lack of development and had I in that year been asked if what I knew of her film and stage attainments I bet I’d have been sore put to say anything more than her minuscule and somewhat sad rôle in the 1940s film Holiday Camp, and I feel pretty ashamed too, damn it! Later, I would marvel at a film clip of her Queen Elizabeth I’s Tilbury speech against the approaching Armada…Magnificent!
I think I saw her in "The Importance of Being Ernest" at The Haymarket also in 1968.
She was my father's cousin . He was a real Northumberland Robson
Thank you so much for putting this on TV listen to this on radio so many times thank you
Amen to your appreciation, my thanks too to those who have most thoughtfully and generously made this treasure of a film with Valéry Hobson available for our viewing. Thanks a million!
Wonderful movie and i did like the ending. Wife and husband really did love each othef and just needed time to rediscover each other.
The agonies and challenges of people in the home front. Good for young people to be aware.
Love Uk film's from the 1940s & onward.TY.
A great movie with substance, thank you FV
Tank you for this wonderful picture from a time long forgotten...it's sad how everything has developed...let's dream some 94 minutes..
That was quite moving. Reminded me of The Best Years of Our Lives.
@Janitor Queen “Sniveling”? It’s pretty serious for those who’ve lost their livelihoods.
Two different countries of course Not comparing Not at all Just stating a fact
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
Thank you🌹
I was a youngster during the war, saw many films with my old Mum but do not recall having seen this one before. Some brilliant stuff in this especially Sir Michael looking suitable for the wonderful Red army, great craque.
Lots of this scenario at the time so the lesson is take notice of the Commandments & none to the bastard telling you to go to war. The Establishments are only there to bugger your individual lives up. Always fight your own corner, morally & with dignity. Our creator intends that for us & says as much.
Good movie....in reality this is one of LIFES troubles...this would have been humbling, I'm glad for this example...
Valerie Hobson really was a most beautiful woman; and it hardly needs to be observed (it being so obvious) that Flora Robson really was a most wonderfully luminous actress.
Splendid! Loved it...many, many thanks.
How do we have the ability to love someone so much and then getover them and love someone else just as much,i guess that good because if you lose your love you know oneday its possible to be happy again😊
I've wondered that myself, many times.
Another British film good cast
Valerie Hobson stayed with the pathetic figure Profumo of the "Profumo Affair" and set aside her own self interests despite her career and stayed beside him allthrough his years out in the "wilderness so to speak as a person "non grata" until recognised for devotung himself to a life of "good works" until finally recognised by the socalled "establisment"
Excellent movie, thank you 🌷
A prisoner of War and a Colonel at that, comes home after war, a journey of thousands of miles, in a Russian Peasant costume instead of his Colonel's Miitary Uniform or Civies, at least? Nanny's talk to the married pair is poignantly relevant to today's situation.
Wasn't England beautiful before it became a giant warehouse and car park?
Most of the population back then were living in Victorian hovels, on tiny incomes: they had no reason to be 'Rupert Brook-ish' and romantic about the countryside and the fine houses that they never had the opportunity to experience. After the war's end, they had to spend decades paying for it.
Are you under the delusion that in the 1940s most English people lived in cosy rural homes? Even then (and well before then) most Britishers lived in in smoky cities, cramped stream-built houses etc. Don't be deceived by roamticised, and atypical, movies.
@@nicholasreid1836 many British say same things. We understand the sentiment.
It isn't just that that ruined England. So woke.
Brit films are THE BEST THERE IS!
I really enjoyed this film.✌️❤️
Excellent film.
Redgrave was so good in Mr.kipps
Fun to watch my Britain as we once were! Thank you
@MTknitter22 As we once were i.e. being bombed by Nazis?
A real gem Thank you so much
Hi
How truly wonderful! It's right up there with ' Mrs. Miniver' Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua.
Diana is played to perfection by Valerie Hobson. Valerie’s second husband was John Profumo, who was forced to resign from the British government because his illicit affair with the British call girl, Cristina Keeler back (I think i) in the 1960’s. It was known as the “Profumo Affair”. It seems that there were some concerns that British government (confidential) were being leaked to the Russians because one of Ms. Keeler’s other client was a Russian. All very James Bond!
Read about 45 Cranley Drive and the Soviet spies.
@@allegra0 Valerie's real life situation would be an echo of Diana's situation in this film only 17 years later. Just as Diana sacrificed personal happiness to stand by her returning war hero husband, so Valerie sacrificed it to stand by John Profumo after his fall from grace. She gave up her life on film and the stage when she married Profumo, and replaced them with a different kind of stage, that of a political wife. After the scandal broke, their life as a glittering couple, the War Minister and his glamorous wife, was over. She had lost all her public performing arenas. Profumo found his charity work rewarding and, I've read, even got a new mistress and a flat in London. Valerie lived a more lonely, isolated life in the country. Her first husband, Anthony Havelock Allen, visited her and Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother still had the Profumos to dinner. Within several years, Profumo was given a knighthood by the Queen and visits to Buckingham Palace resumed, signaling his redemption, but things were never the same.
@@lemorab1 Mrs. Windsor did not give Profumo a knighthood, she merely acted out directive given by those who dish out such spurious honours.
Superb until the end.
Thank you 🤩🤩🤩💖💖
Thank you.
Loved it!!!
I just watched am here in México City,. At junior high school I remembered have studied House of Commons, very interesting yo see a woman have a chair at it, and the way all wars separate families althouh this one was lucky. Great movie.
Not sure how they screened this House of Commons setting…given that the Westminster Parliament was bombed and largely destroyed in the 1940 war years, and this film setting after the war was over and Westminster rebuilt or at least repaired - and much changed I believe in interior style.
A higher than high thinking girl lady and fulfiller interrupted by a sad arrow pierced in sulphuric acid overpowering which seemed easy underpowering. HARD. 🔥
Que pena no poder verla, mi ingles no me da para eso, y parece ser buena, ademas me gustan las peliculas de esa epoca😄
Goofs
The film starts with a caption saying "June 1940" as news is received of the death of one of the characters. We see various diary entries, including one saying he's been sent to war - this one is dated "December 8th 1941."
The actress fixing the car was in Holiday Camp.
VH was my favorite👍🏴
She could stand in for Deborah Kerr.
terrific performances and interesting script, but let down by unlikely happy ending. and where were the evacuees/refugees in that vast house or elsewhere in the village?
I wonder where the opening scenes were filmed? Turville maybe?
Superb
Why do you persist in removing the credits?
Well there"s Valerie .Ducie, Jimmy and Flora if that helps
@@williamf4544... oohhh, thank you... I like VALERIE Bertinelli! Is that Paul DUCIE ("Black Neon") or DUCIE John ("Three Way Split")?

Movie should have been called, "Wife Goes Back to Boring Husband."
Interesting
Terribly implausible ending
Yes, but terribly plausible sorrow at the beginning (I can assure you), then the slow recovery when the will to live comes back, and that part about women in politics, and the "nothing will be the same again" after the war - very interesting, and superior acting by Valerie Hobson.
No credits. I like to see who was who. That spoils it a bit. I only know Michael Redgrave was in it because I looked at the comments first.
Very disappointing - completely changed the ending from the book which is a great classic.
@varianreeves7553 What's the ending in the book please? I'm a film-watcher not a bookworm.
They seemed to do that a lot in the 40s/50s. They changed it completely with Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians. They had to give it a happy ending.
4 to 6 bungalows in the above mentioned area of residence of the lady Ms Diana Dial Y
The postman was right
@None-zc5vg He was an opinionated oaf.
I've always found Michael Redgrave very depressing. He might have been a "great actor", but for whatever reason, he comes across as tedious, affected and remote in all his roles.
Maybe it's just his British style.
47:32. he just had to say that, lol
First rate. - Duty: "stern daughter of the Voice of God."
Realistic.
Creepy and sentimental.
Sentimental?. OK. It was wartime. But, creepy?
She should have continued acting, and not second fiddle to Christine Keller. Well, I suppose the price of security, can sometimes, come pretty high.

It’s National Velvet’s mom.
No, this is Flora Robson as Nanny. National Velvet's mom was played by Anne Revere.
Terribly British . The scenes between father and son...cool as cucumbers. Not even a hug.when he first sees him. Ah, the Brits.

Ups! I wrote ..yo...and it should be "you"
Funny how all the servants then seem to do nothing but worry about their rich Masters living in their big houses, knew their place and didn’t spend any time worrying about themselves not being rich and not having big houses! I suppose only the rich and upper middle classes matter.
All movies deal in stereotypes and generalities. But " servants" do become friends, and in many relationships they care about each other very much, become family.
I began as a babysitter, met the girl when she was pregnant, kept her babies. We became close friends.
30 years later, they spent nights, weekends, vacations with us. The kids are like our shared children. They're lifelong friends now.
As a child we had a babysitter, maid, cook, sweet older lady. We loved her, she loved us. She wasn't some " servant" she became so much more.
It all started to go wrong in the sixties - I still remember the day out parlour maid asked for a weekend of during the grouse season - Of course we nipped that in the bud right away - To be fair she soon realised how unreasonable she was being once it was pointed out to her that her day of was a Tuesday .Most people started to have problems with their staff in the sixties and things just kept going downhill from then on . We were lucky - our parlour made is 97 now and still gets up at 6am to make a start on the house work .I dread to think what we will do if anything should happen to her .
Funny novels about English and society during Regency and Victorian years were
were written by “ Marion Cheney”.
Many points of view included those in service and they had their own fun and challenges.
Many considered part of the family and the house keeper and Head Butler were powerful in the house.
Also, under no circumstances shall anyone, upset the cook!
Governesses and Tutors were not considered servants but professional and separate.
Also one novel about “ Poor Relations” often treated as of no importance and may be a companion or chaperone as a way to be helpful and appreciated.
Funny novels!
Such troubles but all was well by the end.

Oh take a hike and leave the rest of us alone, we don't need your sanctimonious BS.
The children's book of fairy tales and lies. Ignorance of the truth. World created in 6 days, Earth 6000 years old, woman created from the rib of a man, talking serpent, man lives 3 days in belly of great fish, men walking on water, man kills 20,000 soldiers with jawbone of an ass, woman turns into pillar of salt, men dyeing and then being alive again, men living 900 years, thousands of people fed with a few fish, Earth covered by water, the list of lies is almost endless. Answer these questions honestly with common sense and logic and then you will have the right to try to brainwash others.
Heaven is a concept.
