  • I'll show you how I made a set of four Adirondack chairs using Ana White plans that I modified a bit. I used 2x3 lumber because Home Depot had them on sale for $.25 each board and I had some 2x6 PT lumber given to me. So I spent a total of $8 for all the lumber. I did buy a box of GRK exterior screw that cost $28...woah.

Wow! big score on that wood sale!
chairs came out really nice. It was helpful to see how easily modified these plans are. I have extra deck boards I
m planning to use as the seat and back.

Deck boards will be perfect! I wish I had deck boards instead of the 2 x lumber i used for the seats, they would look a little more sleek and less chunky. but I'm not complaining...

Self-tapping screws are intended for metal. 🙄 They have limited strength in wood and even less driven into end-grain, because of the depth of the thread away from the main shaft of the screw. There is also reduced strength in using pocket hole joints. All the stress is on the thin screw as opposed to a good strong mortise and tenon or half-lapped joint. 😖

All very good information I didn't know. thank you. Clearly I'm not a woodworker. I appreciate the advice. The chairs have held up surprisingly well in two years...for an $8 investment I'm pretty happy with the result.
