      Hi, I'm not an USA citizen. Could you explain what is HOA?

    • @jaya9936
      @jaya9936 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1027

      @@anglinst HOA is a Home Owners Association.
      It’s a neighborhood group that has rules for houses in the neighborhood (things like how often the lawn must be mowed or house repainted) they also have the ability to issue fines if you don’t follow the rules. The goal is technically to keep the property value in the neighborhood up by making sure everyone takes care of their house but a lot of the time the people in charge of the HOA are on a power trip and fine or don’t allow stupid things. Not every neighborhood has an HOA though

    • @anglinst
      @anglinst 2 ปีที่แล้ว +340

      @@jaya9936 thank you!
      I don't think HOA are very common in Portugal or Europe in general.
      We have condominium fees to pay for cleanup or overall maintenance of shared parts of a building, like elevator, pool, stairs.
      Or sometimes in private closed condominiums ( like a small private neighborhood) there are adicional fees because of road, sewers, gardening maintenance, sometimes security etc. In those small private neighborhoods i guess it might be considered a HOA by definition. But i don't think there are rules about how often or what to plant in a lawn. That seems crazy!
      These private neighborhoods have people living in there that have a lot of money so it's not a problem ever. And everyone wants it well maintained and pretty. Normally these people want to live in a quiet neighborhood that is closed off from the general public for security reasons. But again there aren't any rules about what you can have planted in your house or anything like that.(that I'm aware of)
      Unless of course for example a tree's roots is actually destroying a neighbors house. But that is normally a problem for the local government. (in public normal neighborhoods) you call them and they do make you take down the tree if it's endangering a neighbor or destroying something.
      Other than privately owned spaces it seems weird to me for anyone to control what you do in your own house and garden.

    • @anglinst
      @anglinst 2 ปีที่แล้ว +386

      Lawns seem to me like a cultural USA thing.
      You don't see a house with a big patch of grass in front of it in Europe.
      You normally see a garden (with grass, flowers, bushes, trees).
      And if it's not be super well kept it's fine nobody cares (unless it's a jungle in there)
      And normally houses with well kept gardens are from people with more money.
      Medium/lower class people don't normally have a big garden, just some small squares with some bushes or fruit trees.
      And here i think we try to have some more native plants and vegetables/fruits. Than just grass.

    • @cher280z
      @cher280z 2 ปีที่แล้ว +130

      @@anglinst
      If you've never heard or lived in an HOA you're a lucky one. HOA stands for 'Home Owner's Association.' They make and enforce rules and guidelines for all the home owner's in their subdivision. That means you can't do thing's on your own home and property without prior approval from the HOA board. This means you can't paint your house, add shrubs or trees or hang flags or even have lawn furniture without approval from the board. They're designed so that all the houses pretty much looks alike. It's suppose to protect property values and to make sure no one deviates from the rules or let's their property look bad. This also means they can ticket and fine you for your lawn not being cut or for dead grass. Mind you, when you live in these HOA you also pay a monthly home owner's dues or fees which can run anywhere from $30.00 to hundreds of dollars a month. Some people like this for their neighborhood some don't. Where are you located?

    We have a good mix of everything in our garden. Depending on the weather conditions, we have tons of clover all over the garden ,which makes it rather short, while this year the conditions seem to favour tall grasses and flowers. We are letting everything grow this month, but next week its getting mowed to give the shorter plants a chance to get through after the tall grasses have gotten their chance to seed.
    Clover lawns are neat but imo monocultures are monocultures. If you have the option, just try and let native plants spread around and leave some places for tall plants ❤

    • @gwen878
      @gwen878 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      exactly. people forget about the benefits of native species and how ecosystems work in general. probably called “more eco friendly” solely based on the water usage and nothing else

    • @michaelpettineo1328
      @michaelpettineo1328 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      “Eco friendly” in this case can refer to the low ecologically dangerous impact that a legume like clover has compared to a non-legume ground cover. As a legume, clover benefits from nitrogen fixation that provides the nitrogen component of fertilizer without application of synthetic fertilizer. Nitrogen fertilizers and synthetic fertilizers in general have the dangerous ecological impact of contributing to eutrophication, algal blooms, and overall ecological imbalance. Legumes essentially help to counteract this.
      Also, white clover and red clover are considered to have a cosmopolitan distribution, meaning they extend across all or most of the world. Clover is native to Europe and that may be where this homeowner lives, so that wouldn’t indicate an invasive. If this homeowner lives in the USA, it is worth noting that the historical uses of clover include cooking, drying, and eating of clover by Native Americans which indicates that clover became endemic to the region regardless of its ancient roots in Europe.

      @@gwen878 they also fail to realize that water usage is as important as size of the humidity zone the plant creates the bigger the zone the more water doesn’t evaporate into the atmosphere and is returned to aquifers I love it when people tell me how it’s ok Astro turf sucks in the heat but it’s ok because it’s saving the planet when in reality there just insuring any rain they get won’t be properly absorbed
      Also why do they think it is clover can survive better in low water environments is it because they help win there natural territory war by decreasing the amount of water available in the soil with there structure by reducing the insulation value they provide the soil pulling moisture up from the aquifer instead of pushing moisture down with soil humidity

    I overseeded my grass with "micro clover". Filled in areas great at first, but then grew faster and taller than the grass. Mowing was a nightmare due to the moisture retained in clover year round. The clover patches were "too lush" and created a cool, moist under canopy for more insects than Im used to. After 2 years of clover in about 30% of my lawn.. I had to kill it off. It is great for doing an entire area in clover if you want it pasture-like and dont need it manicured. Not a good choice mixed with grass in an area (like with an HOA) needing to stay manicured.

  • @drivingmissmolly

    Moss is another amazing grass substitute for lawns. You NEVER have to mow a moss lawn since they only grow a few inches tall and just continue to grow out and spread. Dandelions are poor food for bees and they will kill other plants with their roots, they will spread very far and ruin other peoples hard maintained gardens. They are an invasive plant not native to America. And again, nutritionally they are an inferior food source for bees compared to most other plants. Dandelions are also a prime target for aphids which can easily become established on them and spread to the rest of your area, some ants also farm aphids and if these ant colonies become too successful they will kill a lot of beneficial insects and remove them from a large area around the colony. In europe dandelions are treated as an invasive weed because that's what they basically are.

    I’d want a moss lawn, the springy type of moss too, I remember when I was little there was this enormous patch of moss big enough for an adult to use as a bed and it was so thick that it genuinely felt like a springboard when I’d jump on it so I used it like a natural trampoline

    I never heard of anyone doing this, but now I want one!!! Hope there are no cows in the neighborhood! 😬

      Cows shouldn't be fed straight clover, it causes bloating and discomfort.

    Omgggg this is such a good idea, never occurred to me you could fill a lawn with something other than grass. If I ever have a lawn I'm gonna do something like this.

    Clover is great. I have a mixed grass, clover, and dandelion lawn. Clover fixes nitrogen, dandelion brings up deep minerals, and grass maintains a strong turf for kid foot traffic.

    I always thought it was funny that the only people that usually want a clover “lawn” are cat lovers and those are the only people that really should never get one lol

    Clover is one of the first sources of clover flowers for our bees. Keep the bee population healthy and alive. Btw:. Even with a gas mower the clover and flowers come back up until their season is over, then other sources of pollen laden flowers are abundant during summer. Polinators appreciate the boost. 🦋🐝🐞🌺🥀🌹

    Ok, two questions:
    I've never used a mower like that before, what happens to the mowed clover, like does it stay on the ground or decay?
    If you have kids running around and playing football, is it a suitable ground surface that won't get destroyed? My grass struggles to grow with it constantly being kicked up all the time.
