On October 16, 2012, my grandmother Melba Lollar, affectionately known as “Granny Boo,” passed away after several years of complications due to living with scleroderma. I sadly was unable to attend her funeral, but as I had been known to arrange and improvise hymns on my viola, I was asked to arrange and record a few to present at her memorial service. Little did I know at the time that these recordings would lead to a full-length album of instrumental arrangements of hymns in a variety of different musical styles-all in memory of my grandparents. Now, as I get closer to finishing the project, I am recording demo videos of these to promote the CD.
This hymn, “My Jesus I Love Thee,” was one of the original two I recorded in my apartment bedroom in Baton Rouge, using a basic stereo recorder, my viola, some samples/plug-ins, and a Brita water filter as a shaker; several years later I rerecorded everything with better equipment and had John Cleere add upright bass to replace the bass samples. This ballad-like arrangement, though significantly modernized harmonically, attempts to preserve the reverence and simplicity of the original hymn.
