When you first start checking out water filters, it nearly does your head in. I have an MSR Trailshot that can be back flushed. Replacement filter parts can be expensive & hard to find. At camp, boiling the water works too. A good video explaining the different types & suitability for different needs. Well done. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Chris, in your water filter review u forgot to mention one of the most important things, pore size. Most hollow fibre filters filter down to 0.2 microns. This allows most viruses to get thru. The finest pore size filter I know of is the MSR Guardian. It filters down to 0.02 microns which filters out viruses - even Covid! As u mentioned unlike all other hollow fibre filters it is self cleaning. A big issue with some eg Sawyer. The Guardian is freeze proof and drop proof from at least 2m. The pore size is a big issue, Its is ten times finer than anything else I know on the market. It is military tough hence the price and unfortunately, the weight.

One point about pump filters like that MSR one is that its claim of lasting for a long time through many gallons/liters lies another problem with that type of filter. Is that it has moving parts which are prone to breaking. I was with a group that had two of them for the entire group and they both catastrophically broke leaving the group with just my water filter for the duration of the hike.
