The original music video was to the Navy Blue Angels flying. Sammy’s voice is incredible. Incredible song and solo by EVH🎶🎸✈️
Yes! You guys have to check out the vid! Beat me to it, @workingman6681!! 😂
th-cam.com/video/h2WMwISL3Tw/w-d-xo.html 🙂
We saw the Blue Angels this past summer at the Chicago Air Show. Half way through the show, I pulled my phone out and started playing this song....lol..
Oh....and someone updated the video with footage from this year's Blue Angels movie on Prime: th-cam.com/video/gAaZhsBvWkk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ABYQgC1PmA5sU3xN
When Dave left the band I remember I was crushed. In 1986 I was in the army stationed in Korea. This is the first song from the Van Hagar era I heard. It changed my life. Sammy wrote songs about love and inspiration. This is my favorite song of all time. Whenever I need a kick in the butt or to raise my spirits I put this song on and crank it up. I love both versions of Van Halen and always will.
I was stationed at the fleet Oceanography Center in Monterey at the time. I missed Dave too. But was already a huge Sammy fan, so I thought it was a brilliant move.😎🤘
This is a great song! Sammy kills this!!! ❤
Dlr lyrics are good for the balls, SH lyrics are good for the mind. We need the two era s.
Their best song IMO.
Despite Eddie's by-now tired tired tapping histrionics, this was the album where Van Halen went pop.
So many good memories back in the 80's. I was a huge Van Halen fan. I just saw Sammy watching the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. He sang a Foreigner song and then Lou Gramm came out and sang I want to know what love is with Kelly Clarkson, such an awesome night and many great artists being inducted.
This entire album is phenomenal!
Yup. This came out when I was in grade 9, and though it was weird, coming from the DLR experience, it grew on me quickly. I literally wore this tape out. Lots of people whined about Sammy but to me at least, he made the band grow, and added versatility too.
My favorite rock album of all time!
@@steved1135 exactly my experience and at roughly the same age.
@@steved1135 I've always maintained the Sammy made them a more adult sounding band, if that makes any sense. DLR made them more a party band or radio friendly band, plus Sammy adds another guitar to the sound in some songs.
Some people trash on Sammy but I think he was good for Van Halen. I’m 65 and I can’t imagine DLR singing this. Great reactions as always!
He couldn't,different kind of voice...
The public seemed to know before Sammy did. His wife knew, we all knew. It was the obvious choice.
Absolutely. I’ve always said I could see myself sitting down and having a drink and visiting with Sammy… but I wouldn’t make 5 minutes with Dave.
@@pcunruh Well, that's certainly how I choose the music I want to buy and listen to: Would I want to sit down with the guy and have a drink? 🙄
I was stationed at Ft Ord in California when this album came out. This album was just the bomb at the time
I live both the Roth and Hagar Van Halen - different ‘feel’ for each, both great in so many ways. But, Hagar’s vocal here is simply staggering.
'Dreams' was/is my class song when I graduated high school in 1987!! And it will ALWAYS and FOREVER be my song!!
This was their 2nd hit with Sammy Hagar in the mid 80's. Give a listen to "I'll Wait" from their previous album called "1984" , last album with David-Lee Roth.✌️
A great tune! Another Van Halen tune with Sammy Hagar that is definitely worth a listen is "When it's Love."
Summer Nights is another great Van Hagar song
It was great to see your reaction to Dreams!
I love what Sammy Hagar brought to Van Halen. ❤
Every time I really listen to this song, I'm in tears by the end. Why on earth is that?
I never was a huge Hagar-era VH fan, but this tune gets me every damn time. Big time nostalgic vibe.
Now I gotta find the Blue Angels video. lol

@@grega8586 Thanks brotha
@@funkster007 👍
Van Halen had two distinct periods. Dave had the loud, party feel with the garage band sound that made them powerhouses in the early 80s. Sammy moved them into musical quality songs with meanings that DLR could never achieve.
Yes like I wrote Dlr lyrics good for the balls, SH lyrics good for the mind 😅
Love the Sammy years! This particular song holds such a good memory for me!✌🏻😎
Aftershock, Judgement Day, Mine All Mine, etc., are often overlooked., but are great songs by VH.
Greatest American rock band ever! No one brought more energy and swagger to the stage! 🤘
The highlight track on this album, i think, is the title track 5150. You guys will really appreciate the guitar work and the vocals.
I love the live version!! The energy level was off the charts!!❤❤
5150 & Little Guitars are my two favorite VH songs
@ Mine too!! Throw in Feel Your Love Tonight and In a Simple Rhyme.
That moment when the solo during the chorus melody switches to tapping always gives me the chills.
Always a great ride both versions of Van Halen were great they achieved different things. Love the reaction NicknLex ❤️❤️
My favorite Van Halen song
This album, 5150 was their first number one album, and every song is incredible Thank you NicknLex for thinking of me, I greatly appreciate it.
Hey David, I’m a huge Van Halen fan too. I’ve seen them 4×2 with David Lee Roth and two with Sammy. I know you’ve seen it when Eddie does his guitar solo eruption. I was at that very concert. It was at the New Haven Colosseum in New Haven, Connecticut.
@@garycol195 So cool, you were there, that guitar solo is ranked number one of all time, i've seen Van Halen DLR 2 times, back-to-back nights in Philly and 4 times with Sammy, best concerts I've ever been to
@ best concert I ever saw was in your backyard 7/13/85 Live Aide and the other concert I saw at JFK journey got booed off stage only because they were opening for the Rolling Stones 10/25/1981
@@garycol195 I Love Journey, Live Aide was the most incredible concert ever, Gary that is so cool
Surprised 1984 peaked at#2, but was their biggest selling album.
Like Peter G and Phil C, I'm a both eras of Van Halen kinda guy! I managed to keep up to date with them while in SA, and thought the Sammy era was just as strong as Dave's. Listen to 'When It's Love ' from OU812. Guitar and synth perfection! Believe it or not, this song 'Dreams' was on the closing credits of my son's favourite Power Rangers movie! Happy New Year!!
Van Halen has so many really great songs between both the singers. You two should keep pounding on the Van Halen...well done
Lot's of great songs with both singers, and I like em both. Pound Cake should be next, album version.
NicknLex should watch the official video, they will love it
I was stationed in South Korea when 5150 was released and I bought it on vinyl. They used to show the "Dreams" music video as a backdrop for space available flight listings to places like Kadena AB in Okinawa, Clark AB in the Philippines, and Travis AFB in California on AFKN TV (Armed Forces Korea Network). Great memories from those times and I really miss it.
Thank you so much for your service to our great country, Thank you
I was a crew chief on some of those birds out of Travis
There's a great live version of this on YT that showcases Michael Anthony's vocals when he helps Sammy out on the chorus. Michael is such an underrated musician.
this IS my favourite van halen song. it moves me to tears ❤
Brings back my 80's memories...
This album IS the summer of 1986! Takes me right back to junior high school.
"Summer nights and my radio
That's all we need, baby, don't cha know?
We celebrate when the gang's all here
On a hot summer night, that's my time of the year!"
- Van Halen/Sammy Hagar
. . . I had graduated already :).
here's my total honesty, I love the musical part of the DLR Van Halen, and I Love the musical and vocal Sammy Hagar Van Halen, total honesty.
The Sammy era was amazing.
Love Walks In live where Sammy plays lead guitar and if course sings is great as he does those Eddie guitar tricks also. Eddie plays the keyboard the whole time.
Pound cake is another incredible kick ass song
I remember the surprise when 5150 came out sounding louder than Turbo the new Judas Priest album at that Time
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a wonderful band!!!
the song lifts you up
When Sammy Hagar joined the band they took the band to a new level. The music was much more serious as compared to the DLR version of the band. Sammy is a head & shoulder's above DLR when it comes to vocals. Check out the song Human Beings, its a Banger.
Im at a loss for the meaning of "it sounds 80s". I hear this all the time in reactions. I was a teenager through most of the 80s listening to all that music and for the life of me i dont understand what sound pepple are hearing in the music that instantly triggers them to say its an 80s song! A great VH song. Very positive and uplifting message. Great reactions!
Hehe, at 61 I feel the same. Especially certain Metal bands that were not mainstream (which was _most_ of what I listened to). I think it has to do with the "Production", it was very slick and polished. And any Rock song with "Synth" brings that 80's mindset (even Rush). In Metal a LOT of bands (not all) had that smooshy "Snare" sound (even Megadeth's "So Far So Good... So What" album). It didn't have that "snap" when the mid/late 90's came around. I do wince when people say that, and when people say "Its sounds like a Video Game/Sounds like Video Game music!" because I didn't play video games (but later worked for 2 Game Studios :p).
no, you guys haven't done any Van Halen marathons or albums yet, I'm waiting for that day, hopefully someday in the future.
5150 album was sooooooooo good! This song is such an inspiring song. The music video was cool too.
Puppy!!! ❤️😀
This and "Finish What Ya Started" are my favorite Van Halen songs!
Hey guys.....Steven Wilson will be coming to the US on Tour......you should critique his new album The Overview. I heard its a truly progressive work. It doesnt come out till 3/25 but gearing up and it would be great to see what others think........Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
My favourite songs from 5150 are the title track and Good Enough. I like both eras. Totally crazy is that between 5150 and their first album it was only 8 years difference. 8 years... such a short period of time and such a different sound.
Dreams was one of Sammy's first hits, and Eddie laid out the music for that track. Sammy came up with great lyrics for that hit! Great interview by The Professor of Rock Talking to Sammy about dreams and meeting Eddie: th-cam.com/video/Yh2cR3P67u0/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ProfessorofRock
Put me down as a fan of both Dave and Sammy era VH and this is one of my all time favourite tracks, not just by this band, but by ANYONE. What a banger.
Me too. I like the version of Van Halen with Eddie on guitar.
Van Hagar era.
Sammy is singing so high on this one! He said when recording it he sang to the key Eddie was playing on the keyboard. Now he says he has to take down a step when singing live.
Team Sammy here. 💯
For Van Hagger I suggest Black and Blue and Best of Both Worlds and Poundcake.
This is one of my favourite Van Halen songs. I love DLR and I love Sammy Hagar. They are different and each bring something different. I think that Sammy has the better voice and is the better songwriter... plus he is also a great guitar player. From the DLR era, I love Ain't Talking 'Bout Love, Running with the Devil and even one of Dave's last songs with them, Me Wise Magic.
Rock In Peace Eddie Van Halen
They're the only really big band I can think of that changed singers at the height of their Fame and fans are fairly equally split on who was better because they were both good but brought a very different elements to their songwriting and the direction Van Halen went
For the uninitiated, the difference b/w them, is Van Halen is with DLR as lead singer, and Van Hagar is VH with Sammy on lead vocals.
This is One of Sammys best vocal performances really hard song to sing. Check out
'Mine all mine' and 'Judgement day'
Great reaction....Right Now should be your next VH from the Hagar era.
Their live energy during this period was off the charts. You have to check it out. Anything from 1986's "Live Without a Net" would be great. I suggest "5150" or "Summer Nights." Enjoy!
they have the Live DVD of Live without a net, so they can check it out
They were def more consistent live with Sammy. Shall we say more reliable to be in their right mind. Dave yrs you could catch an off show. They tightened up after that
Next reaction should be the song “5150” live from Live Without A Net. Video reaction.
Plenty more Sammy with VH to discover guys! In my opinion when Sammy joined they got even more amazing! I like Dave but Sammy was such a better singer and songwriter!!
Try to find the Blue Angel’s video! This song’s old enough that the Angels were still flying A-4s, but it still gives me goosebumps!
If you watch the video of this song with the Blue Angels, it will really pull your heart from your chest. It's AWESOME
During the brief 1991 Itaq War, American pilots listened to this song to get pumped up before going on bombing runs
There is a live version of this from 1995 in Toronto that is incredible.
On another subject I recently made a discovery and I think you should spend a few minutes listening to Judee Sill. Her song "The Kiss" from her second and last album Heart Food is one of the most beautiful love songs ever. You won't regret it.
love the dave era, but van hagar all day!!!
solo sammy is very nice!
Great reaction, how about some rockin tracks from 5150 with Sammy like good enough or get up! Might have changed your mind when you were a metal head

Numerous videos have been made with this song and the Blue Angels, the US Navy’s flight demonstration team. This video is the latest… enjoy!
Yes, This is with the F16 the original video they were using the F4
@@stevenseul361Uh, no…. This is with F/A-18E Super Hornets. The original video was with the A-4 Skyhawk. F-16s are used by the USAF’s demo team, the Thunderbirds.
You can always tell a Van Halen song by Alex's drumming.
Good Morning, a Van Halen marathon or an album, that would be so great, I'd love to sponsor a Nick and Lex Van Halen marathon when my business picks up and I can afford it, right now business is slow because of winter, Spring is coming
The guys were awesome writers and could write straight forward Rock songs so really well, that they made it on the "Pop" charts (because of Eddie's "Hooks", with Sammy's help and his lyrics). I have no problem with Sammy Hagar's vocals, and I was a fan when he was a soloist and before that in Montrose, so I already knew his voice. But with VH I think he really stretched out. I love when he hits the highs, its not "clean" but it has a lot of power, emotion and an edge. But the significant difference with Sammy vs David is LIVE, every earlier live video I have watched, David doesn't _finish_ the words to his songs, he omits parts or _forgets,_ as in the really early footage, it seems he's usually drunk :p. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE his material and those albums, but live . . . Sammy was "there" and helped out on Guitar when a song needed rhythm backing or when Eddie was on the keyboards (he learned to play piano at 6 years old). But those higher key vocals from Bassist Michael Anthony always take the vocals even further (be it Hagar or Roth).
Another song off this album is the power Ballad "When Love Comes Walking In" . . . that one will bring you to tears, including another on the next album ("OU812") "When it's Love", that melody will tug at your heartstrings. The 1 thing I do miss is the raw HEAVINESS in the Sammy era (there is "Get Up" on 5150 though).
- Good to see you guys continuing a deep dive into Van Halen.
Poundcake or Runaround!
You need to watch “There’s Only One Way to Rock” from their Live Without a Net video to watch Sammy and Eddie duel on guitars.
Absolutely incredible
Eddie does the keyboard intro
Should get into some more Sammy Hagar Van Halen off the 1988 OU812 album.... Finish What Ya Started is a good one.
Finish what ya started is incredible, I think NicknLex will be blown away at the style of the song, crazy story behind the song
Yes! A great album 👌
If you like Sammy try the first Montrose album.
Van Halen and Vsn Hagar are different bands beyond simply having different singers.
Van Halen was more of a riff based band with a frint man who put lyrucs to the riffs.
Van Hagar added a fourth musucian and long establish singwriter which allowed Eddie to more on keys as Hagar was also a guitarist. Hagar was also more of a lead singer than a front man. The albums also got 50% longer all without relying on covers.
I prefer the DLR albums, but both eras are very good, just significantly different.
F1rst!!!🎉🎉🎉
And that was waiting a couple mins before commenting.
5150 is code for mentally unstable.
the song 5150 is great song, NicknLex will love it
I always consider the Sammy versus DLR argument, kind of like the Ozzy versus Dio for Black Sabbath. I really like it all. They’re all just different. But I would probably say I prefer DLR and Ozzy. Ironically, though I would say that arguably, Sammy and Dio are actually far superior as singers
🤘😎
Me quedo con Sammy toda la vida, DLR ERA UN PAYASO y Eddie que decir de el la mejor viola de los 80's con Yngwie, después vinieron Satriani y Vai 🎶🎵🎶👍👍👍🇦🇷
You need to check out the original Blue Angels video.
Their song Judgement Day is more rockin.
Still waiting for you to react to the title song 5150 live off of Live Without a Net!! I’m the One off the debut album is their showcase song!! It has guitar, vocals/harmonies, drums with a little doo wop thrown in. It’s high, high energy!!
no video of the band? i want to see you react to the band as you watch it.
Thank you so much for the salute, I Love you guys so much, great song choice, the official video is the official video for The Blue Angels, Naval Aviators, check it out, I'm still waiting for the day for a full Van Halen album, LOL haha, the Live Van Halen songs you have reacted to are DLR, "So this is love" and with Sammy live was "mine all mine" from Tokyo, Thank you again for the salute and I salute you two with all my heart, the next Van Halen song to check out is " When it's Love " you guys will absolutely LOVE IT
I love 'When It's Love' David. Great choice.
@@richarddobson815 Thank you.
It's a disservice to compare the 2 eras of VH... DLR was so different than SH ... I personally enjoyed SH more than DLR .. I grew up in So Cal in the 70s so we all knew about VH and Sammy before they hit it big. It's a shame that Sammy and the Van Halens grew apart but Eddie was destroying himself. Sammy and Michael Anthony are still making music together Sammy in his mid 70s sounding as great as he did back in the day
if you guys decide to react to another Van Halen song " when it's love" check out the official video, you will love it
Hallo ihr zwei. Wie wäre es denn mal mit 'Electric Callboy'? Es gibt lustige und ernste Sachen. 'Parasite' + 'Mind-Reader' = serious, and 'Tekkno Train' + 'We got the moves' are funny....but there's more to discover....
I first Sammy in 1977, and he totally rocked my world, Sammy had several hits 🤘
Glad you picked the full version - the radio edit clumsily butchers the guitar solo and completely takes you out of it. This was where a lot of OG fans turned on the band, and many blamed Hagar for the change of direction. Which for one is to forget that the change began before Hagar's arrival, on the preceding album 1984. And secondly is to under-estimate Eddie: This was what he wanted to do, and he fought both band members and producers hard to get his way. And whatever you may think about it, it's ultimately how Van Halen stayed relevant through the 80s.
Interestingly ZZ Top made a similar left turn in the early 80s, arguably to an even greater extreme, what with many songs featuring just a drum machine, synth bass and Billy Gibbon's guitar. And I don't remember anyone complain about that. Maybe because it didn't overtly sound like they used synthesizers, although two out of three band members are nowhere to be heard on some tracks.
Sammy could actually sing, whereas to my ears DLR always sounded like he was shouting his way through songs.
I really loved Van Hagar!
The debate continues. In my opinion, Sammy a miles better singer than DLR who rarely remembered the words to a complete song, but DLR a phenomenal front man.
Beautiful Girls is my favorite song- the Van Hagar years were B- to me - I liked the songs but not like the first 3 albums- too synthy in the mid 80's for my taste even Jump with Roth was a little synthy
I hear Sammy Hagar. I turn the dial on the radio. Just my stupid opinion.
Fun fact:
Van Halen albums sold:
DLR era: 46 million
Sammy era: 46 million
Wrong. Hagar era sold 16 million. Not even close.
Sammy has always got a bad rap. His Van Halen songs have so much more substance than DLR songs. The problem wasnt Sammy, it was Eddie. Eddie wasnt a problem though , he just progressed. However, a lot of fans dont like progression, they want their crazy guitar solos and tapping from Eddie. Just like when Rush progressed in the 80s, their older fans didn't like it.
I don't usually make these types of comments, but... You can't call any version of VH soft rock. It is not be metal and a little pop than ACDC, but soft rock?
