Que ce soit avec une jupe pour une femme ou un kilt pour un homme la manière de lisser le vétement en s'asseyant est la méme, sinon le kilt se froisse, fait des faux plis sous les cuisses et c'est inconfortable.
As a regular kiltwearer, I wanted to add that you can use the stall by grabbing the pleats from the center in the back and pulling as much fabric to the front as possible. When sitting, I effectively have the pleats from both sides covering the top of my sporran. Hope this helps!
Rocky from USA Kilts has videos showing how to sit in a semi using a towel to hold pleats in place. I'm not a kilt owner yet but watch lots of videos. Just wrap towel around, sit and slide if necessary. Leave towel where it ends up and keep hand for getting in the next tome.
This young man is wearing the kilt without a belt which is optional. One way of spotting the tourists is they’ve usually got a kilt belt on. Also, if you’re wearing a sgian dubh (short knife) it’s best to check if the country or state allows it. As I understand, Scotland still allows it when worn as part of the traditional dress.
Simon P ~ True...for weddings and private events, however if you go to a club etc afterwards you will most likely be asked by security to hand it over to them to keep in the cloakroom. Even fake ones are usually confiscated till you leave.
Gee, I've been doing this since I was a toddler, learning to sit in a skirt like a little lady!! Gentlemen, just be glad you don't have to navigate a hoop slip/petticoat underneath the skirt/kilt. Now THAT's a REAL challenge. I was 7 when I had to face that challenge 65 years ago, now.
Right? Those instructions made me chuckle, especially why they have to press the sporan down when sitting. Ah, yes, the splayed leg sit - lol! I was also baffled why they would need to take their kilt off if sitting on the toilet. Maybe it's safer for a rental place to say - just take the thing off - rather than risk them not properly collecting all the fabric to the front, the way we automatically know to do. (Well, we were taught, of course, but so early in life).
@WhiteTiger333 Yes...and, when I was a young girl, I wondered how the bride and her attendants all managed those voluminous 1950-60s wedding gown skirts when they had to--ahem!--use the facilities at the reception.
I thank you for this video. Although I know it is not traditional in any sense, I have a Utili - Kilt.and this video was helpful to me because I am new to wearing a kilt and usually have problems sitting down in it without accidentally showing what the Good Lord Gave me [ yes I wear it regimental / commando ] or having part of my bare behind on the seat, because I just plopped down like you would in trousers. if you get a room full of guys wearing Kilts doing this, and it sounds like applause LOL
When you practice, also develop a technique for how to sit down when one hand is occupied. At a social event you may be holding a drink or a plate of food in one hand.
Yes. The Navel to Knee measurement varies for people and for women kilts, and really any kilt, and you can decide were you want your length to be. If you didn't mean a custom kilt, and more a kilt that we have in stock, we don't really have many Highland Dancing kilts. For more info on a custom kilt check out our custom kilt section on our website.
Sifting-through this series of videos is.. tedious. Surely, the company is reputable - albeit run by Yanks - and they offer quality and great Customer Service; but these "How-To" vids (especially the 'Measurement' ones) are... excruciatingly-slow; and are intended for someone who's NEVER considered how a shirt or jacket is constructed/or have ever.. SEEN a shirt; or have never seen ANYONE measure before? And they utilise a METAL measuring tape. SURE: They make a cursory mention of cloth/Tailor's tapes, but then proceed to employ the Builder's Tape Measure throughout. It's jarring; and odd. #ProperToolAProperJob, Lads. (Consider showing how ANY lengths of twine/string/ribbon can be used to wrap & mark for accurate measurements, THEN use the metal tape to transcribe the set of accurate measurements, on a sheet of paper. "So-easy, even a MAN can do it!" -- or not, apparently?)
As for myself wearing a belted plaid/great kilt, unless I sew in cheater pleats, I would wind up having to be on the bathroom floor in my underwear trying to repleat the belted plaid. I was an undergarment wearer until an incident in the bathroom where my knee high Renaissance boots stopped the boxers from going past my knees while trying to hold the pleats in front as described by SoulFyre777.So not only is hanging up a great kilt not an option, so is underwear when wearing knee high boots!
I remember the early days of wearing my great kilt.... I got a rendition of The Scotsman dedicated to me. And I didn't even get a blue ribbon out of the deal.
Here’s a question for you - I’ve been watching The Outlander (great series BTW) and wonder how they made themselves comfortable riding a horse, wearing a kilt. Any thoughts?
Maybe that should be our next video! LOL! People back then were not used to being as comfortable as we are today. Watch them as they mount a horse, they just swing up and go. However it is, it is.
That's a trickier situation for sure. I would imagine that a sliding board would make it easier for the fabrics to stay put while sliding from the side. Perhaps sitting on a windbreaker will allow you to pivot on the seat without twisting the fabric. (Physical Therapist Assistant advice)
Depuis la France, c'est un bon conseil, je l'applique moi-même avec mes kilts comme mes manteaux ou longs imperméables, ça évite de froisser les vêtements longs et amples.
It's not necessary to take the kilt off and hang it on the door to be able to sit on the toilet. Women don't take off their dresses or skirts. Just lift up the kilt to your waist and sit down. Keep holding your kilt around your waist until it is time to stand up.
Why do men always have to put their underwear down to their ankles? I was wearing a full-length skirt, knee high boots and the only available bathroom was a mobile toilet (music festival). Long skirt, high boots, no space - but nevertheless no problem. Can't imagine that wearing a kilt (just wearing, without the folding and all this) is that different from wearing a (longer) skirt. Is it?
One keeps a square folded napkin, of restaurant quality-steal one from the Ritz, Astor, or Hilton, in one's Sporran. Take it out an lay it on the chair. As one sits down, with the dominant hand pushes the apron between the legs, so not to give the persons opposite a thrill, and the other hand pushes gently out and away on the pleats so as to NOT be under one's bum. You do not sit on the pleats ever!! Aloha from Hawai'i, and we here in Hawai'i have our own Tartan. However, follow this Yanks advice if it pleases you...
the under wear go to the ankles so the knees can open so the junk can point down. the thighs hold the pair in the way of the main character which leads to poor aim. Open the thighs . things fall and are pointing in the right direction. Mystery solved
What about a Native American like me can I wear a kilt because I love those kilts i use to wear gothic clothing and long kilts I use to wear but I did not wear these yet
No, you should look into the traditional dress of your specific tribe. Just like I wouldn't wear around a feather headdress, you should be respecting your own traditions :)
The Apron is lighter than the pleads on the back. If ya wanna pee like a prussian general, you have to wear it like a scottish lieutenant and lift da apron. Otherwise, take it off.
If you are a woman, great for you. You've most likely been raised up wearing dresses and are used to it. American men, for the most part, aren't used to wearing dresses while knee high to a grasshopper. For me, I had no problem with the small kilt that just wrapped around the waist. However, I had a great kilt with 6 yards of fabric at 60" wide all around me and I am not yet used to all that much fabric. I am still new at great kilt wearing. Small kilts, I have no problem wearing underwear with.
vishal sharma yes. Just stick with universal tartans like Black Watch or Scottish National. Just look up "universal tartans" and find one ya like. Black Watch happens to be my favorite and goes well with almost anything cuz of its dark blue and green colors
You're better off wearing shorts or trunks or something under your kilt and not go all "regimental" unless you want to be embarrassed or even hassled by the cops (indecent exposure doesn't have to be deliberate). It's just not worth the headaches. Women don't normally go around without panties under THEIR skirts for similar reasons. It's also not hygenic for a hired kilt to get soiled by your messiness, guys. I wear contrasting tartan shorts under my kilt now, it's more amusing in case there IS a high wind or a grabby drunk on St. Pat's acting cute. And I got tired of frightening the old ladies or fending off all the young ones when I was "commando."
skirts365 there were no kilts in the days of William Wallace. one of the many historical inaccuracies of that movie. kilts didnt show up until about 300 years later.
Anyone can wear a kilt. There are many tartans now that are not specifically tied to a particular clan, such as the 'freedom tartan' . Look them up on google. you can get a casual kilt for around £50. Really comfortable.
What is the point of our traditions if they are open to everyone? Better to investigate your own roots, you will definitely have a traditional dress style of your own :)
It amuses me how the tips you give are pretty much the way ladies sit with short skirts. ;)
I love this video!

Can we see the how not to sit in a kilt video?
Kilts are comfortable as anything, if i could i would wear one everyday
+Paul scott015 I do wear one every day!
@@WolfieMcMuffin nice. !!!!
I agree they’re super comfortable. I’m starting to wear them on a regular basis.

very thorough and helpful. Though I'd have a kilt I never thought about the sitting down part :)
i never wear underwear under my kilt unless it is a windy day but i always bring a underwear in my sporran just encase is that correct
As Rocky from USA Kilts says "sweep the pleats".
thanks for that. i can walk and stand but not for long so use a wheelchair a lot so spend a lot time Siting so this is usefull for me
very good for scottish and original
I would say the Great Kilt invented that method. As seen in Brave there are some other techniques invented in a Great Kilt (Watch Trailer at 1.15)
But are you wearing the kilt in the traditional commando manner?
Be a man, sit like a man. Show 'em what you've got. Yeah baby!

Jamie Fraser's saddle for example is covered with sheepskin which prevents unpleasant friction.
I'm handicapped. When I normally sit in a car, I back into the door, sit and pivot to a normal car position. How would I do that in a kilt?
That's a trickier situation for sure. I would imagine that a sliding board would make it easier for the fabrics to stay put while sliding from the side. Perhaps sitting on a windbreaker will allow you to pivot on the seat without twisting the fabric. (Physical Therapist Assistant advice)

i see the female tartan skirt in the back do ye sell them shorter above the knee and in a 14 year old girl size and do ye sell highland dancing kilts
The easiest way to learn to sit in a kilt is ask any women you know how they sit in a short skirt.
I heard an account of woman who wore a kilt to a wedding she said she couldn't cross her legs with a sporran on
How do you sit in a kilt on horseback ?
Watch Braveheart or Outlander.

I guess crossing your legs is out of the question. I'm half Scottish and the idea of wearing a kilt is appealing.
