Well, knowing about spanish history allows you to know that dali was a francoist and was not a great person, and that could be reflected in his paintings and would help to better understand his intentions as an artist, on the other hand knowing the context of a musician's reality, who makes a genre of music where the most important element is the lyrics, is extremely important. It is not the same for other genres or songs where the lyrics have a more secondary role, and the melodies, harmonies, rhythms or sound design take the main role, things that Fantano does not seem to know much about despite being a musician.

I feel like people tend to forget that hip hop is also the genre where he's awarded the most 10 out of 10s and usually sings the most praise. For every not good and 2 there are a fair few 7s, 8s and 9s. Hip hop fans use the fact that he's white to try and discredit him when he doesn't like a specific album which is a shame, people also tend to just skip to the score instead of hearing the legitimate criticism he might have which is usually sound. It's a honestly sad that his reviews are only seen as the number grade at the end of the video instead of the reasoning behind that number.
Honestly people saying "Wow he gave [x] album a [y] score" and just completely ignore the reasoning behind the scoring is so annoying. Fantano is very fun to watch because he might give a criticism or some compliment that makes me see the album in an entirely different light and appreciate it more. He says a lot of things I usually don't pick up on or don't know the full story.
I think the problem is that many internet Hip Hop fans blindly love everything that they’re favorite rappers put out no matter what. An example of this being people criticizing him for giving that boring ass Gunna album a low score.

You're right but that's a weak argument as a) it's a self-appointed job, and b) people are entitled to hate those for their job such as a whaler (it's literally their job)
It's because people get used to their music getting inflated reviews from other sources. A fantano 7 is not the same as a 7 from The Rolling Stone or whatever. For most people rating things on a 1 - 10, their 'average' is like a 7.5, and anything lower than a 5 is basically unheard of. Fantano's 'average' is a 5. When artists drop an album and magazines are giving it a 8 and calling it "okay" and they see fantano gave it a 6 and called it "okay", they get mad at the lower number. Then you get people who actually know who the guy is and how he works, and when they get a 7 they're super happy because that's actually not super easy to pull off.
A big complaint I have with rap is that they are so allergic to feedback that their music starts to sound stall like Eminem and Em is my favorite rapper.
That's honestly a lot of artists nowadays, not just in hip-hop. So many artists won't take an iota of criticism, and their stans feed into that mindset by calling the critics "haters" or some sort of petty insult. I think social media has a lot to do with that, unfortunately
Eminem last album Music to Be Murdered By is dope af. Mark my words few years from now, you gonna meet a new breed of Eminem stans who will put MTBMB as their #1 Eminem album. That's how great that album is.

I feel what you're saying but here's the thing.. Anthony lives like 15 minutes away from where I live. He lives in New Haven, Connecticut but not anywhere close to Dixwell Ave, more towards the rural, rich white part. He grew up privileged and separated entirely from anything resembling hip hop culture. He really hasn't struggled in any real way. Now you don't have to be a specific demographic to review albums, but it just adds insult to injury when a subculture dominated by people who grew up and live on the polar opposite end of the spectrum is being gate kept by someone who literally comes from a line of people who historically have kept the other side of the spectrum down. It's like the rich factory owner who lives in the rural mansion who judges the inner city of poor people who literally run his factory. Fantano's factory is the culture he judges in this analogy. You have to at least appreciate the irony here. Aside from that, he lets his personal tastes, beliefs, and morals (or lack thereof) infect his ability to review music objectively. Can't count how many artists he's dogged just because of their politics not aligning with his, when previously he praised the same artist. At that point it's like ok, nobody really takes this guy's words seriously right? Because if it was just all entertainment and some random dudes opinion then who cares right? But clearly he has such a large following that his opinion actually affects the artists, not from his words alone, but from the type of audience he has. These people will ratio comment sections, troll fans, etc. anything to reinforce the community that's been cultivated in his comment section. That's when people start to get frustrated, especially artists, because it becomes clear that as crazy as it is to do, they all have to yearn for a good review from Fantano to avoid the domino effect a bad review can have. For that reason artists resent critics. They just wanna make music without having to cater to anyone
@@lemondrop7305 sure, anyone can do anything they want, but in doing that all credibility goes out the window and the reviews become useless. in the case of rap it does. when you have a commercially successful genre it is driven by the public's demand. It’s not Fantano’s fault that the hip hop community and rap artist are so sensitive. I don’t agree with some of his reviews but I understand it’s his opinion and I have my own
I fuck with Anthony. He put me on to a lot of different artists I would’ve never checked out when I started really listening to albums. It’s a persons opinion and though it’s a platform that gets eyes, it’s just his opinion. We aren’t always going to like the same things.
He's definitely one of the most articulate reviewers I've watched and I do agree with a lot of what he says (depending on the topic) but within the last year or two Fantano's been insufferable in a few of his vids. He didn't have an issue with Snoop Dogg, Benzino, The Game, or Melle Mel calling Em a white boy in a negative way yet he took an out of context screenshot of part of Em's verse on 'Realist' with EZ Mil and tried saying the whole song was Em complaining about being white which flat out wasn't true, he was responding to the multiple people who were dissing him publicly. Then he said he didn't want to give Kanye a platform to spew his hate speech - and then he proceeded to post several videos about Kanye across his TH-cam and Instagram pages. Then if you say anything about it he just calls you a "Stan", "fanboy", "glazer", or whatever internet buzzword is popular at the time instead of actually taking the criticism which is exactly what he does to artists who don't like what he has to say.
I just hate that we live in a world where if someone has a though on any other thing they get attacked for not knowing the struggles of a culture or stuff like that. Rap is going to be liked by some and hated by others. It doesn’t mean someone doesn’t know what they are talking about or are trying to appropriate one’s culture 🤦🏻♂️
12:56 - You may hate on him but Fantano absolutely called it. Dude's been hating Drake for the same reason today everyone hates Drake. He was ahead of his time here. 17:37 - Vince can try to play it off and convince people that he believes Fantano's opinions are shallow and that he doesn't give a fuck, but he's the type of guy that will give a shit about smth and try to pretend he doesn't by being passive aggressive and tongue-in-cheek (like he's done with his comments towards Fantano in the last couple of years). @chimera_43 i mean a lot of times if the music is itself political (tom macdonald, recent kanye, others im sure) it would be neglectful and dishonest not to include how those politics influence your enjoyment of a song
That's the trouble I find with Anthony's reviews, which is why I typically prefer his reaction content where we get to see the live reaction to things instead. So often the outside shenanigans will taint an artist's work, i.e. Kanye, Blueface, Ronnie Radke, and while this is sometimes reflected within their music quite directly, other times it's moreso in the background. Anthony being a person who very closely follows music as a journalist and a fan, he's likely privy to a lot of this info and it's going to be difficult to enjoy a piece of art from someone who's has so much baggage outside of their art. Personally, I learn a lot of background information from Anthony's reviews sometimes. But I CONSISTENTLY learn just as much, if not more, from interviews the artists do while promoting their work. It's a mixed bag. Reviews offer good outside perspectives so long as you're fine with taking it with a grain of salt. Interviews are great from directly tapping in with the artist and their mindset at the time. But I think reaction streams are great when you get to bond with people over music, even if your opinions differ.

This is like a video about how butt hurt rappers obsess about a bald music critic more than it is about why Hip hop doesn’t respect Fantano. Plenty of artists are completely ok with him, talking about an entire movement and genre not respecting someone or not is off the mark. To me every example in this video of an artist responding to Fantano’s reviews is as cringe as the Drake DMs were, especially Vince Staples and Logic talking about how they would kill him.
Sam Hyde too: "If I was Fantano I'd be suicidal I'd be like Kurt, with my lips on a rifle If I was Fantano, I'd get me a rifle I'll kill Fantano, right hand on the Bible"
Well depending on the artist he might have a different standard for that person's music. Like if someone dropped a really good album then dropped a worse one he holds them accountable.
It’s kind of hard to be consistent when it comes to art. There’s films I rated less that try to be thoughtful character studies compared to cheesy kaiju films. Who’s to say it’s right or wrong to rate either film better?

For most people rating things on a 1 - 10, their 'average' is like a 7.5, and anything lower than a 5 is basically unheard of. Fantano's 'average' is a 5. When artists drop an album and magazines are giving it a 8 and calling it "okay" and they see fantano gave it a 6 and called it "okay", they get mad at the lower number. The mere existence of this video is silly. Why is there controversy about the opinions of another grown man. Smh
It's totally ironic, Isn't hip hop a depiction of black masculinity?
They just wanna make music without having to cater to anyone

lol I didn’t realize some of the hip hop community is as sensitive as the Swifties. He’s just doing what he does as a music critic. Just because he doesn’t like something doesn’t mean you should allow that to ruin music for you or worry about his opinion that much. After all it’s just that: his opinion
There's no way you put the fucking oliver tree video as a "He feuds with artists". Like everyone knew it was a joke right? Like even AI could figure out it was a joke surely
Should he really care if hiphop doesn’t respect him? He’s just giving his opinion. He’s extremely well versed in more genres than most people care to even delve into in their lifetime and knows a lot more about music than many of the people criticising him. The inconvenient truth is you *do not* have to be a hiphop head to review rap music and you’re not obligated to pay deference to the culture…that’s the reality…we can’t force them so why try? You don’t see rock, EDM or Jazz fans trying to gatekeep who reviews their music as much as hiphop heads do. People outside the culture are allowed to digest the music differently, we can’t really stop them 🤷🏾♂️ And low-key I wanna know how people outside that circle are digesting the music, I’ve always found observing how people from different walks of life digest art. That’s part of the fun. Cultural relativism is a thing, I don’t cry about it, because an echo chamber would be infinitely worse.
perfectly articulated best answer out of every comment i've read music's reflecting in our soul connects us more as people rather than acknowledge his opinions don't align with yours it's better to ignore or listen as his knowledge shared can uplift more music artists to find greater success in their career. Both are good comments!

Hilarious how so many of these rappers that get offended have tried to build tough guy persona's or even talked about them not being easily offended like Drake did lol
the genre in general is so fragile to critique more so than any other genre by a longshot. Metal has its fair share of hate of Fantano since it seems to be his least favorite genre overall but it's not even close to the salt that some hip hop artists / rappers generate.

It’s not Fantano’s fault that the hip hop community and rap artist are so sensitive. I don’t agree with some of his reviews but I understand it’s his opinion and I have my own
I mean, if hip hop is just Kanye and Drake fans, then yeah, I guess they wouldn’t like it. Honestly though, most of his reviews are fairly spot on
I fuck with Anthony. He put me on to a lot of different artists I would’ve never checked out when I started really listening to albums. It’s a persons opinion and though it’s a platform that gets eyes, it’s just his opinion. We aren’t always going to like the same things.
Faaaaacts!
That joey badass clip had me in a chokehold😂😂😂 joey is so dope

Your stupid view is political bro
