Your best bet for getting money out of tournaments really is farming locals, or better yet, farming a tournament nobody knows about but which still has prizes. Some years back there was a video game event at the university campus in my home town, with a bunch of stands for both retro and modern games, and they also had a couple competitions, among them was Pokken Tournament DX as the game had recently released on Switch. I ended up beating on some kids and other attendees that were even greener at Pokken/fighting games than me, and as the winner was presented with a choice between some PC accessories and a 50€ note. I took the latter and ended up using it on buying the game on Switch, reasoning that I don't have to feel as bad about buying the game a second time after already having bought the Wii U version when the money came out of tournament winnings. So I "invested" it back into the game and got some hours of video gaming fun out of it!
It's so funny how different reality is from how r/kappa types used to think it worked (and still think), I remember how present was the narrative that people were just pretending to like Street Fighter V to make the BIG BUCKS because it was the only way to make BIG MONEY

In the FGC, it's less about making money and more about putting yourself out there. But doing well at tournaments is the easiest and most efficient way to build a fanbase, I feel. Cause people are more willing to follow the guy that got top 8 at a premiere event who puts out content than another guy who puts out content but usually goes 0-2 at every tournament they go to, like myself. The latter will get 1-3 viewers at most while the former is always going to have a growing audience because an audience knows the tournament winner is following a philosophy that works while the 0-2'er is following a philosophy that doesn't work. The average person wants to be a winner, not a loser. That's why in the FGC, winning is EVERYTHING.
Not necessarily... personality comes a lot into play. This is why Maximilian who is just a casual player can generate tons of money cause he knows how to draw in new viewers and keep them.. while someone as strong as idom or big bird wont ever be be able to pull in that many cause they lack the personality needed. Obviously if you have both, then yeah you are definitely got it made.. but nust being casual with good content is sometimes enough

Honest question, how difficult would it be to be a top competitor in FG's while working a regular 9-5 or any "day job" that is your main source of income to live comfortably? I see a lot of top players try to focus on "content creation", but I'm thinking if you get a stable 40hr job, you can still put in 30+ hrs a week into a game and that's enough to be really good, right? I mean, did we already forget what Lord Valle told us?

When you take into consideration stability and the amount that goes back into streaming/branding. I Agree and realize saying no one thinks they need money is inaccurate however and I apologize. Id say “donation” is a weird word In general when it comes to streaming even thought by definition its technically correct. Brian’s so broke he’s got to use word pad :)
Lol
The amount of Smash players I've seen that will farm locals for rent or bill money is pretty funny.
Brian's out here showing how the sausage is made, and as usual the picture isn't pretty. lmao
I can't believe that people got rich by being watched playing videogames. Do you see all that money? That's your money.
what's your thoughts on people getting rich by being watched moving a football?
@@30yovegan34 I don't like football and I don't watch it. I just find it weird that people donate to rich streamers to watch them play instead of playing the game themselves. As a gamer myself I think that videogames should be played.
@@ralvron8357 i don't disagree with you, but it's the same with major sports as well, people live vicariously through others.
@@ralvron8357 I find it weirder for guys to give naked chicks money ... I guess everyone has their own taste.
Lol I can't wait to see how those streamers will try to justify donations now. they don't need your money people. spend it elsewhere.
They’ve never justified it? It’s always been public? Did you even watch the video? People never spent money on donations because they thought those streamers needed it??? Are you ok?
@@515JUKE I'm fine thanks for asking. for example max has made millions of dollars yet he still has the audacity to let people give him more money. now that the info is even more well known, people are gonna start questioning how greedy these streamers are. I had someone make a great analogy. they said, "imagine if you saw Brad Pitt walking down the street. you ran over to him, handed him $20 and said, 'thanks for being so entertaining'. he probably wouldn't take it. he has more pride than to accept random peoples' money". sponsors and subs can pay the bills and then some. to accept more is to be greedy. they should choose. and trust me there are people out there who donate thinking the streamer needs it.
@@TheComedicPCGamer Mate, you're high as fuck. Twitch streamers do not make as much money as even an B-tier actor for a single movie, cinema is a MUCH bigger industry than e-sports/streaming. That analogy makes no sense at all.
@@Raxyz_0 @SwordMaster I happy your doing good :) I think I get where you and whoever made that analogy are coming from. And I could see how it could be viewed that way but only without taking into consideration all the facts. That analogy and argument hold no water when looking at the numbers comparatively. When you take into consideration stability and the amount that goes back into streaming/branding. I Agree and realize saying no one thinks they need money is inaccurate however and I apologize. Id say “donation” is a weird word In general when it comes to streaming even thought by definition its technically correct. Sucks streaming is a must when it comes to trying to make a living of fighting games compared to other esports.
@@Raxyz_0 but they (I'm talking about the big ones BTW) still make enough money that they should turn off donations. it's pretty fucking obvious they are preying on people by showing off the highest donations. some people fall for that shit and hand these people money just so they can be recognized for a few seconds. young kids do it all the time.
Lol @ who is critical role. FGC players are so out of touch with most other communities.
what kind of a loser without real life is "in touch" with every community there is, and what for? i don't give a flying fuck about d&d, what's so funny about not knowing shit about it?
That sounds like a lot of work. How about you just pay me and we call it good.
Lmao THE SFL CLASSIC! So much truth to that
