Sadly there is a big difference between Manakitanga (hosthamship) and how co governance plays out when you have bolshy proud young maori bulldozing their way through local communities, through their elders in a mad rush to gain power. My experience after working for years with maori rangatira, is that I have seen newcomers sometimes straight out of university, still in nappies, in so much of a rush to reap the rewards they walk all over and ignore the Little Red Hen produced over decades of devoted work. It is sad to see so many iwi boards trampling on both their own elders, their own heritage and on pakeha in the community who also have wisdom to share. in the process. There are of course many respectful young maori willing to learn but those that are in a rush to control the reins of power and money are all too often closer to the arrogant ignorant type who already know too much to be taught.

Tino pai raua atu tou korero.
I agree, we certainly do have many of our young ones with a new found education, desperate to dive in and take the reigns of power from those older or perhaps more wiser.
That's said, education is key and whether or not it may seems to be messing with the established institution, sometimes a fresh perspective can be valuable and centric to Iwi wider needs and certainly have their place in Iwi governance.
We must also remain mindful that appointments of younger skilled whanau into important Iwi roles are often supported and driven by forces and agendas within Iwi and Whanau that will give them a perceived slice or sense of Mana to act in the manner that they do, to challenge the institution and all that entails
This is usually the fault of existing governance bodies and their boards that do not put correct processes in place that will ensure clear rules of engagement and management along with clear accountability structures and practices to Board and stakeholders, these things can be exploited by these clever youngsters if not considered or importantly covered by the board.
This often fuels the wild imaginations of the.people and generates anger mistrust and misunderstanding.

@@mwin3303 Actually, the Maori were not the first to NZ, but that is irrelevant. Missionaries came and were well accepted and the Maori turned away from killing, enslaving and eating one another. They invited the protection of Britain, which Britain gave reluctantly. The Maori went from a stone age culture to the modern world in just a few short decades. Colonisation was good for Maori. The Maori chiefs at the time of the signing of the Treat of Waitangi in 1840 with Britain and also the 1860 Kohimaramara Conference confirmed their gratitude for Christianity, European clothing, and European food. More than any other "indigenous" culture in the world, the Maori have benefitted immensely from European culture. There needs to be more respect by young maori of Pakeha Whenua, not onlyTangata whenua. There are at least as many pakeha who have a deep connection to this land and devotion to it as their are in maoridom. The land is an inheritance from our Creator. Stewardship is the fundamental responsibility we have in our relationship with the land. It is shameful when present day maori denigrate Pakeha Whenua on the basis of a difference of a mere few centuries between the arrival of our forbears who arrived by sail, stars and seamanship..
We need mutual respect, not the kind of bulldozer mentality I have experienced from a number of Johnny come Lately maori managers or iwi trust board folk. Leadership, whether maori or pakeha is meant to be deeper than that. It's not about power. It's about respect, privilege and responsibility, towards God, the whenua, elders and specialists, and towards those who live in our community or relate to our land. We need to beware of formal institutions that include only crown and iwi and cut out genuine and deep interests of Pakeha and wider NZ society.

The Treaty says nothing of the sort. But of course Maori see it as an opportunity. He Puapua sees everything, including minerals, water, and the air we breath as "taonga" - i.e. a treasure on which a royalty can be rightly claimed and extracted from everyone else. In other words Maori want a free ride at everyone else's expense - who wouldn't (as a Maori) think that's a wonderful idea? And in He Puapua, it even mentions petroleum as a taonga, something that Maori had no knowledge or understanding of whatsoever. Surprisingly, however, it failed to mention sunlight or solar energy, but the list of taonga was not intended to be exhaustive - just "by way of example." After all, we know that Maori have a claim to the airwaves and if He Puapua proceeds wind and (sea) wave power generation claims are just around the corner. Make no mistake, He Puapua is an outrageous "wish list" based on being of Maori ancestry (how much no one has quantified, but there are few, if any, full blooded Maori on Earth left) and of being of the "right" tribe or connections that the NZ Labour Party is keen to enforce on all New Zealanders. If you don't know NZ, people who identify as Maori have been leaders of political parties, Governor's General, Head of Govt Depts. and of business Corporations and some have achieved world acclaim in their sphere of activity. Here we have a Professor (there are many that identify as Maori), who has had the same opportunity as everyone else. So, surely this is enough? No, for Maori (and I qualify that in terms of activists and politicians of Ruru's ilk), it is never enough!

If there were a ton of good Maori politicians and people were electing them then that's all that matters even if they ended up being 99% of the government.
Same if they ended up being only 1%. All that matters is that everyone gets to vote, the elections are fair, and that the media isn't controlled by any one faction and allows the truth to be told and everyone to have their voice heard.

Here's a few of my thoughts on this topic, because I do think it is important to New Zealand and I do care about New Zealand as a whole. What I see is fundamentally wrong with the status quo is two different sides of the same coin. On the one side of the coin we have the crown that is built on domineering upper class entitlement and abuse of land and privilege that sought to conquer for materialistic gain and then on the other side of that same coin we have Maori entitlement to land beyond generations and Maori privilege, both are bad for various reasons.
What I saw with the flag debate in the John Key era was a longing from Key to bring a new sense of national identity but yet he loved mixing with the upper echelon of society aka the Royal family, but guess what? They are just people ole Johnny boy they are just people, that is it. What there needs to be is internal an external moral consistency that is transformative and not putting one group against each other, if you are seeking to change the flag then be morally consistent change the dynamic with which we view the crown, become a republic that is a fair democracy, one person one vote, trim down bureaucrats for a season til we get our books in order and at the same time honour and respect Maori and pakeha not lifting up or putting down one group ove the other. To heal generational wounds there must be forgiveness from both sides, but I see a clearer path forward one where we celebrate the multi ethnic colour that is New Zealand. The reason why the flag didn't pass is because there was a dichotomy present I was for the new flag change but it needed to be coupled with a fresh constitution of equity.
Lifting up races as superior or inferior or entitled is in actuality wrong at its core. Forgiveness and a fresh path forward not idolizing the past is the answer. I respect any position that takes us away from crown upper class entitlement and Maori entitlement they are both immature and quite frankly delusional positions.

We can't even have a sensible discussion in NZ about who is REALLY a Maori in 2023 without being called a racist. Apparently if you are 95% German and 5% Maori you are a Maori, that's some creative maths going on. The reality is there are VERY few 50%+ Maori left in NZ, and it should not even need to be a discussion in a modern democracy anyway. The Treaty of Waitangi is as an abysmal poorly written ambiguous short document from 150+ years ago, the Crown absolutely did not intend to "Co-Govern", its intended to give Maori equal rights within the governance of the Crown. The Crown is now "largely" replaced by our modern elected democratic government, where every Maori gets a vote the same as everyone else.
