Democracy under threat? Germany shaken by far-right plot | DW News

  • In a large-scale raid, German police targeted dozens of individuals from the far-right Reichsbürger scene who were suspected of planning a coup. What kind of movement is this - and what threat does it pose to democracy?
We hear from Till Steffen, a member of the German parliament for the Green party; Journalist Tobias Ginsburg, who spent months living under a false identity among Reichsbürger groups; and Lorenz Blumenthaler, a spokesperson for the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, which works against right-wing extremism in Germany.

It's an old problem. As these groups become more and more extreme, they become more isolated. They lose any sense of how far removed they have become from society as a whole.
Remember, back in the 1970's Germany had the "Red Army Faction", an extremely small group that somehow imagined that a few terrorist acts would lead to a mass popular uprising and a revolution.

well you would have to know the degree of right wing extremism being infiltrated in germany’s law enforment and military since decades now more or less without oversight, to the degree that a few years ago the elite military unite was being dissolved after it was clear it was more or less a training center for those militant right wing extremists, same for the police especially in eastern germany, where raids had been tipped off by insiders etc. it’s not random that those arrested ringleaders were ex military, layers and politicians … they are just the tip of the iceberg.

    • @djamilawilschke7259
      @djamilawilschke7259 ปีที่แล้ว

and not to forget the security service … years back i saw a documentary about such a “Reichsbuerger” group with similar ambitions to overthrough the government violently - in fact it sounded very similar as to what we are hearing now. During raids back then they found detailed architectural layout plans of specific politician’s houses and their security details - information only available to the security service, not to forget that a politician had already been assassinated right in front if his house with a headshot in 2019…so basically this whole thing is not new and brewing since a decade at least…

When Catalan coup plotters were arrested under Europol order from Spain, the German court ruled that plotting insurrection was not a crime in Germany and they were released to go on their way back to Belgium, where they live in a mansion in Waterloo with money from Catalan separatists, the Flemish far right, and from Putin. Therefore, I imagine, if the courts are consistent, they will rule to free all the plotters.

Doesn't democracy by principle allow the people to decide whether or not they want democracy? Or have you enshrined Democracy as a god and are bowing down to that single principle? Or is it freedom that you really value, but only for your team when you are in power. Lock down the other team and everyone we can, except our buddies. We stay in charge and keep freedom. The most impressive coup was done by Gaddafi. There was an opera at Covent Garden with music from ADF that told the story. One Sufi leader and 16 unarmed followers turned up in a beat up Volkswagen and took over a radio station and declared Gaddafi as leader. The coup had been arranged by the West to install a new puppet ruler and Gaddafi just sneaked in ahead of him and switched places.
Then in England there is King Alfred. Defeated by the pagan Vikings he had to hide in a swamp near Glastonbury. His army had run away and was lost in the mist. He entered a hovel and an old woman said he could stay the night if he looked after her cakes that were cooking by the fire. He forgot and burnt the cakes. He had a dream that he should blow a horn and rally his troops in the mist. The next day he blew his horn and 300 of his troop found him. They attacked the Viking army of around 3,000 and defeated them. It took a hundred years but the Vikings were defeated.

People cannot clearly discern reality anymore. The world has become far too complex for us. It's overwhelming, frightening and impersonal. Our brain tries to reduce and categorize to get a simpler reality, a reality we can define, but this response is not aligned with the demands of a modern democracy. There's too much noise, too many sharks in the water, too many choices and things that require our full attention to keep tabs on. Simply put, we were not built for this, and there's no shortage of agendas that are keenly aware of this fact and use it for their own nefarious reasons.
I wouldn't be surprised if this downward spiral has almost nothing to do with ideological specifics, and almost everything to do with a brain that's looking for a way out.

In my opinion this is a scam. The "Reichsbürger" have been there for decades,
in the FRG as early as 1950 at least.
In the 1920s there were movements to restore the Kaiserreich Deutschland,
others wanted to restore a Königreich Deutschland. There were people calling
themselves Kaisertreue and Königstreue all over the place in Germany. This
did not change much from 1933 to 1945. Yes, there were people who did not
agree with the NS regime because they wanted their Kaiser or König back and
opposed the NS regime because it was not the old feudal fascism but
    something new.
The "Reichbürger" movement is not a uniform movement like the NS regime
formed the SA, SS, Wehrmacht and several other organizations or the NSDAP
itself. There are factions in the "Reichsbürger" movement. Until today they
have no consensus about what they want back because there are three options:
    - NS regime
    - Kaiserreich Deutschland
    - Königreich Deutschland.
And there are those people who do not kow what they want exactly but they know
what they want to get rid of and that is the FRG.
All of them have one opinion in common: They think the FRG is a scam, a fraud,
has no legitimacy and is not a state or nation and the democratic political
system of the FRG is a total fraud.
There are millions of people in Germany who agree with that but do not want to
change anything or do something about it because they don't want any trouble.
There have been other movements for decades, for example the
    "Königreich Deutschland" movement.
Calling the "Reichsbürger" movement far right or extreme right in a political
sense is totally correct. Many of them have firearms, not just one but
    several.
Many of them are waiting for the opportunity to take over. That is right. But
they are no immediate threat and they don't want to be because they know they
would stand a chance. So they are waiting. This is going on for decades and
    nobody cares.
So, why now this arousement and ado? Yes, that's what call it. There is no
real base for alarm or alert. Yes, they have weapons, yes, they want another
political system. Yes, they are willing to use brute force when the time is
    right.
But they all know the time is not right as long as the FRG is part of NATO and
EU and as long as there are no huge riots all over the place of which they
    could take advantage.
Therefore there is no immediate threat or even some danger.
    So, why now?
If it is not a total scam, then it is something personal. Somebody working in
and for the system FRG has personal issues with some of the "Reichsbürger"
    movement.
    Think about this:
They exist since the first days of the FRG at least and nobody cared until
    now.
    How come?
Doesn't a certain suspicion come up?
Are we allowed to think that there are connections between the authorities
and the movement - at least some concerning personal connections?
I am sure there are some if not many.
