  • In today’s episode we simplify the concept of HDR. HDR requires a small learning curve but once you get past it, it is really quite simple.
    We use Davinci Resolve in this video but the concepts are universal to any software

    Hey,
    i asked this question already under a different video from you, but just in case you dont see it i write it again (feel free to answer to just one of this). I start filming now with my a7r3 (HLG/2020) - what need i to do for accurate color after export (settings, ...?). I use the free Version of Resolve and a normal monitor. My fear is that the video looks different after export to 709.
    Thank you

    • @BillyRybka
      @BillyRybka 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it look different after export? I personally use mp4 and render in H.264 at 3840x1920. I shoot 4k and I want that look stretched look for my youtube videos. You can also just export as 1920x1080. Its all about what you are doing with the footage. So If your footage is color graded right and you export it, it shouldnt change any color settings. If you have any other questions feel free to message me on IG (its easier than Yt comments) IG: Billy Rybka

      RoadCase thank you. I’m currently working on this. It’s a totally new area and is a little trick so I want to make sure I’m comfortable with it to do a worth follow up video and to be able to be confident in the info I put out.

    Covering the output is what I am needing. I have shot in HDR PQ and everything I try in Resolve does not seem to yeild a file that is in HDR. I go to my 4K display, set HDR on in Windows10 and nothing but Windows saying I have to buy a codec, unless I open the files in VLC Player.... but they don't seem to be in HDR.

    Love the video. One thing that i noticed is all the displays i come across only support P3 color space and not the higher Rec 2020. Is this something that effects your export settings? or that should be thought of when grading?

    • @FilmResolved
      @FilmResolved  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes this definitely needs to be factored in. There’s no display that can show rec2020 (at least not at a remotely affordable price!). P3 is basically as good as it gets right now for display gamut. In color management there is an option to work in .2020 with a P3 upper limit (not the exact wording in Resolve but you get the idea). If you have a P3 display this is the way to grade and ensure your not pushing beyond what your display can actually show. You’ll still render in rec.2020 but it’s really just acts as a container for the P3 within if that makes any sense 😂

    I don't know if I got it correctly, but I was hoping to see some delivery settings in order to retain maximum quality. Do you have suggestions about that?

    • @FilmResolved
      @FilmResolved  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it helped! Deliver settings all depends on where and what you are displaying the video on. I also take into account how the footage was shot as going for a delivery of specs much higher than what you shot just increases file size for not benefit. Can you give me an example what you are looking to deliver for and I can give some tips based on that?

    • @robertodalmonte504
      @robertodalmonte504 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FilmResolved In the happy case every piece of the puzzle is HDR10, what delivery codec and parameters would you choose to maintain all that quality?

    I just got an ASUS ProArt Display PA279CV, which has multiple presets, REC 709, sRGB etc. It also has HDR. IF I WANT TO GRADE REC 709 footage, and keep my display set at HDR, will that result in a bad or risky color grade across most platforms? Should I only grade on an HDR preset with HDR footage?

    • @FilmResolved
      @FilmResolved  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can leave you display on the HDR preset for a rec.709 grade. It’s just luminance headroom that you won’t be dipping into when grading for rec.709.

    Great video, very well presented. I have to disagree with the images looking more natural, out eyes can't see the way HDR is. To me it's very unnatural, a good example is some of the shots of Aquman that are shot in HDR. There's nothing natural about seeing all the light from a sunset and having everything else lit. But, good video though, sorry If I sound ungrateful. Your vids are great.

    • @FilmResolved
      @FilmResolved  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey dude thank for your feedback and no problem at all, you’re more than welcome to your opinion especially when it’s an informed opinion!
      I think part of this is getting used to HDR, we are so used to SDR that that’s what we know as normal and HDR seems hyper real.
      Also a lot of HDR we’re currently exposed to (at least in my case) is trying to SELL HDR and is therefore pushing it to the extremes instead of being subtle and tasteful and using it as a creative tool.
      I will admit I haven’t seen Aquaman but I think what you are describing here isn’t to do with HDR as a color space and it’s specs more so to do with stylistic grading choices and lighting that happen to be in a HDR space. I could light an interior extremely bright and high-key and balance the exterior light level and grade to a SDR delivery and still end up with that unnatural look.
      I think a better way I could have said this is that HDR has the ability to achieve a more nature look? Rather than IS more natural.
      I would highly recommend When They See Us on Netflix as a beautiful example of HDR in action.
      Similarly to you, I hope I’m not coming across argumentative or anything, I really like your thoughts on this and I’m really interested in this topic!
      Thanks again for the feedback!

      @@FilmResolved Hey man,
      Thx for the comment back. Really great points. I guess I've only been seeing HDR is a unnatural way so that's why I'm a bit stand offish. Though I can see how it would befit it get that dynamic range and avoid blown out highlights, eg: bright sunny days.
      I'm a colourist from Melbourne myself, hence one I like your channel and video's.
      HDR is far more interesting to me than new camera's that shoot 8k (which is overkill), i'll check out that show, Brad Young is an amazing DOP so will be interesting to see what he has come up with.
      Keep up the good vids.

      HDR is much closer to what the human eye sees. rec.709 only covers around 30% of the hues we can see with our own eyes; and if you shot a piece of white paper and a beam of sunlight, in rec.709, both would appear identically bright, as the limit is 100 nits. Our eyes can tolerate up to 50,000 nits. rec.709 is a relic of CRT displays and has got nothing whatsoever to do with the 'film look' - it is a standard for broadcast television! rec.709 has a paltry six stops of dynamic range, whereas most consumer HDR displays can show as many as ten - the eye can discern no fewer than 12 stops of dynamic range at one time. I've watched dozens of movies in HDR and they look awesome. And because of the higher local contrast of HDR, images appear more detailed than SDR content. This is because what is understood as sharpness is to a great extent determined by contrast; and having deep black pixels adjacent to bright pixels gives the impression of more sharpness. I'd recommend the wonderful Chef's Table on Netflix as an example of outstanding HDR. As for your reasoning, it's not possible to generalize from just one film you happened to watch. HDR is the future, and it is already difficult to find a television set 55" or larger that is not HDR ready.

      Jon Pais Thanks for all that information. It’s a very exciting time. The more HDR content I consume the more impressed I am. I also love the HDR mode on my Atomos Shogun for setting my exposure when shooting log. It’s a game changer! All be it a battery killer 😂 The point you made about sharpness is news to me and very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

    Good to know for everybody would be, that the HDR function in Resolve only can be activated if your use the 300$ Studioversion of Davinci Resolve. The free Version that I youse dos not support HDR 10. (Fun fact here: My hole Projekt/Video is now fucked, dos someone know wehre I find a Software to get a Normal Clip out of an HDR 10 Clip?) Bye the way, even Windows dos not directly support HDR 10. For the normal Windows Player you need to get an Upgrade that costs you 0,99$. A Little Tipp here, if you get VLC Media Player you wont going to have this Problem.
