As someone who lives in a country where all the farmers use hiluxes and also owns one, I can confirm that they are extremely reliable and great value. They last for hundreds of thousands of miles of hard use and keep trucking.
as someone who has access to the internet and eyes to see the reg plate, that hilux is taxed and mot'd to sept 2023, so without even finishing the vid I know they didn't break it and it will be on the road for at least the next 200yrs
My old Hilux had 1.1 million kilometers and those turn signal switches still felt brand new. The same with my newer one. If I drive something else that is always the thing that feels different.
Something similar exists when testing infotainment. It's called monkey test. You just keep clicking shit like an absolute madlad and try to get it stuck
15 years? I could repair that damage with 2k. It’s a few bumpier clips, a cosmetic grill, a disassembly and reattachment of the door rod, and a console from eBay. He didn’t actually put the truck through the test like he did the vintage truck in the us.

Yup, i own a 4x4 hilux and its literally a fucking tractor, all my friends who own 4x2 trucks get stuck on the stupidest puddles and i barely have to push the throttle to take em out. Also, 4low engages by going forward a little, thas why he couldnt get it working on the video clip.

Move to Australia mate, these things are literally a dime a dozen. I’ve got a 99 hilux with half a million kilometres and it still runs like a dream. The old ones are absolutely bullet proof, the new ones not so much. But still a great, extremely comfortable but still very capable Ute. If I was getting any brand new Ute and land cruiser was out of the question hilux it would be. But there’s no way I can afford the 60k or more for one. I’ll stick to my old one I picked up for 4K for now, done nearly 100,000kms since I got it with a total of 500,000 and it has seriously not had one single problem that wasn’t self inflicted
You should do a test on the 76-79 series land cruiser, in Australia they are renowned for being the most durable (all they use on mine site etc) would be interesting to see how they hold up !
You have to always have the windows down because the door handles stop working. Apart from that they are pretty tough because they haven't really changed much since the 80's

I drive one everyday at work. It already has 230.000 km on and it looks like crap by the outside, but it still runs smoothly like a hot knife trough butter. Best durability ever.
770,000 km on mine still going strong on original driveline. Only done one clutch too. I don’t tow and it only goes up the beach though. Bought with 600,000 km on it for 12k. It’s a 2013 model D4D.
Here in Brazil, the modern Hilux is famous for being indestructible (using it for rural work), easily rollover and getting a lot of dust even with the car completely closed. And it's an extremely expensive car here.

Same as the older model, including the right-side steering wheel. I think maybe the reason why the new model seems slightly less durable than the old one is because they've increased the crumple zone to prioritize safety over durability.
well, Toyota needed to put a ton of electronics and comfort stuffs in the new Hilux otherwise those modern day "drivers" wouldn't buy it because in their minds a "new" car must have a ton of gadgets, a BIG centrally mounted infotainment console and EVERYTHING must comply with some unrealistic safety tests conducted by so called "experts" who probably never even ever drive off road other than at the test tracks under controlled environment. As for the real drivers and owners of Hilux, we want it to last, we want it to get us to work and home again and those "extra" options are just to us, optional.
@@omegabulldog5001 I can't remember the auto brand, but at some point they even went as far as to traverse the main V-powered engine perpendicular, or at least redesign the shape in such a way so there's less chance of it pummeling into the cabin and killing both the driver and front seat passenger durinf a car crash.

I had a 86 then a 94 hilux here in Australia. I thought i would buy a new one a couple years ago but after about 2 months i sold it and went back to a 89 model. No where near as tough or reliable. The new one got me to A-Z but my old one gets me there and back again with no dramas. 520,00ks on it. Turboed it at 400k running 22 pound. Just change the oil every 20ks or so 👍
As someone with over 1000 days deployed with an ungodly amount of hiluxs and considering the way we treat them…. They are still that good. Not that I’m a fan of the new ones but they don’t break. Lot of rangers over there as well and they all break non stop, hiluxs do great.
the plastic bumper is for pedestrian safety, all the cars of the last decade became soft and heavy due to safety, tech and all, the tailgate is almost 10k heavier, thats why the hinge broke. cars gain weight due to tech and safety, thats where they trim other parts to save weight like the body its now made of aluminum compared to steel from the past generations.
I just saw one of these on the road recently! I’m the US and had no idea they were still making these I looked it up and saw they were only being sold in Europe and Australia. I don’t know if it’ll do better, but no matter what I sure do like the look of the old one a whole lot better!
I'd love to see the Tacoma be put through the same things the Hilux has. Some people say the Tacoma and Hilux are the same truck, just with different names, others say they are a bit different. However, no one has done a durability test on a Tacoma yet, and I would really love to see one! Especially on a model closest to the old Hilux that you obilterated, say a first gen Tacoma? I wonder if it can hold up as much as the Hilux has, and still end up in one piece, until you drop it from 10,000ft from a helicopter.. xD. They're not the same at all. The Hilux is what the Tacoma wish it was. Sadly the payload and towing is very average even for a midsize truck. The Hilux is a workhorse.

I have a 1988 Toyota Hilux 2.4l 2bbl carburetor engine. It has 352k miles on it. Original miles with the original engine. I just replaced the timing chain set, timing cover gaskets, valve cover gasket, water pump, oil pump, oil pan gasket, lower radiator hose and the pcv valve. Once that was completed, I refilled the engine with new oil and new engine coolant. Truck continues to run like a champ!!!
@@LiamW- yeah there is even a 4000cc v6 version the gasoline models are nowhere near as popular as the diesels though. The GD, KD, and L series engines are much more common and known to be indestructable.

Where I'm from, Hiluxes are everywhere. As they're imported from Thailand, aftermarket parts, off road and drag races, are pretty common here. Also, I love WD for doing this, showing the rest of the 'world' how reliable they are.

I had a 2018 Hilux here in Brazil just like this one but silver. I can attest to the quality of this car, but last year I traded it for a Nissan Frontier which is much more comfortable and has much cheaper insurance! Both are great cars.

Howdy Mr Diesel 😂, at first I was honestly sickened when I saw your classic Hilux durability test, however I was fascinated by how amazingly tough the truck was. I am in possession of a 2013 Tacoma SR5 4x4 that I put a lot of money in. It is decked out with a Magnuson supercharger, front and rear lockers, a Safari snorkel, a winch and much more. If you ever wanted to do a Tacoma Durability Test video I would gladly sell you the truck. It has 180K miles and still drives like new. I love the truck so much, but I could never destroy it, but I would love to watch you destroy the truck for me. Just an idea for all the Tacoma lovers out there.

Here in Brazil, the modern Hilux is famous for being indestructible (using it for rural work), easily rollover and getting a lot of dust even with the car completely closed. And it's an extremely expensive car here.

Same as the older model, including the right-side steering wheel. I think maybe the reason why the new model seems slightly less durable than the old one is because they've increased the crumple zone to prioritize safety over durability.

well, Toyota needed to put a ton of electronics and comfort stuffs in the new Hilux otherwise those modern day "drivers" wouldn't buy it because in their minds a "new" car must have a ton of gadgets, a BIG centrally mounted infotainment console and EVERYTHING must comply with some unrealistic safety tests conducted by so called "experts" who probably never even ever drive off road other than at the test tracks under controlled environment. As for the real drivers and owners of Hilux, we want it to last, we want it to get us to work and home again and those "extra" options are just to us, optional.
@@omegabulldog5001 I can't remember the auto brand, but at some point they even went as far as to traverse the main V-powered engine perpendicular, or at least redesign the shape in such a way so there's less chance of it pummeling into the cabin and killing both the driver and front seat passenger durinf a car crash.
@@KuDastardly I thought the firewall was supposed to be engineered tough that there will not be penetration of the engine block into the cabin in an accident. Maybe the traverse of the engine was in order to change the drive train from rear to the front? I am guessing~😅

We have one from 2012 and it is still going strong after 400,000 km.
Other than regular maintenance the only "major" part replacement was a fan belt.

I had a 86 then a 94 hilux here in Australia. I thought i would buy a new one a couple years ago but after about 2 months i sold it and went back to a 89 model. No where near as tough or reliable. The new one got me to A-Z but my old one gets me there and back again with no dramas. 520,00ks on it. Turboed it at 400k running 22 pound. Just change the oil every 20ks or so 👍

As someone with over 1000 days deployed with an ungodly amount of hiluxs and considering the way we treat them…. They are still that good. Not that I’m a fan of the new ones but they don’t break. Lot of rangers over there as well and they all break non stop, hiluxs do great.

the plastic bumper is for pedestrian safety, all the cars of the last decade became soft and heavy due to safety, tech and all, the tailgate is almost 10k heavier, thats why the hinge broke. cars gain weight due to tech and safety, thats where they trim other parts to save weight like the body its now made of aluminum compared to steel from the past generations.
it is easy to fool people when they are already fooling themselves not knowing cheap materials really was the real reason hehehe

I just saw one of these on the road recently! I’m the US and had no idea they were still making these I looked it up and saw they were only being sold in Europe and Australia. I don’t know if it’ll do better, but no matter what I sure do like the look of the old one a whole lot better!

I'd love to see the Tacoma be put through the same things the Hilux has. Some people say the Tacoma and Hilux are the same truck, just with different names, others say they are a bit different. However, no one has done a durability test on a Tacoma yet, and I would really love to see one! Especially on a model closest to the old Hilux that you obilterated, say a first gen Tacoma? I wonder if it can hold up as much as the Hilux has, and still end up in one piece, until you drop it from 10,000ft from a helicopter.. xD. I hope you'll read this comment Cody and rip up an old Tacoma sometime!
They're not the same at all. The Hilux is what the Tacoma wish it was. Sadly the payload and towing is very average even for a midsize truck. The Hilux is a workhorse.
@@Pantelifts10 The Hilux and Tacoma literally have the same engine options except for the diesels with the Tacoma. They also look practically the same, especially the older models. I'd love to see how the 2004 or below Tacoma model would do.

I have a 1988 Toyota Hilux 2.4l 2bbl carburetor engine. It has 352k miles on it. Original miles with the original engine.
I just replaced the timing chain set, timing cover gaskets, valve cover gasket, water pump, oil pump, oil pan gasket, lower radiator hose and the pcv valve.
Once that was completed, I refilled the engine with new oil and new engine coolant. Truck continues to run like a champ!!!

the gasoline models are nowhere near as popular as the diesels though. The GD, KD, and L series engines are much more common and known to be indestructable.

had several dozen of these body style hilux signed to me when I was deployed overseas. they are pretty fun and durable. definitely put them through the ringer as well as the land cruiser trucks

Where I'm from, Hiluxes are everywhere. As they're imported from Thailand, aftermarket parts, off road and drag races, are pretty common here. Also, I love WD for doing this, showing the rest of the 'world' how reliable they are.

I had a 2018 Hilux here in Brazil just like this one but silver. I can attest to the quality of this car, but last year I traded it for a Nissan Frontier which is much more comfortable and has much cheaper insurance! Both are great cars.

Howdy Mr Diesel 😂, at first I was honestly sickened when I saw your classic Hilux durability test, however I was fascinated by how amazingly tough the truck was. I am in possession of a 2013 Tacoma SR5 4x4 that I put a lot of money in. It is decked out with a Magnuson supercharger, front and rear lockers, a Safari snorkel, a winch and much more. If you ever wanted to do a Tacoma Durability Test video I would gladly sell you the truck. It has 180K miles and still drives like new. I love the truck so much, but I could never destroy it, but I would love to watch you destroy the truck for me.
Just an idea for all the Tacoma lovers out there.
