At the time, though a financial success, this film was only modestly supported by critics, and yet, over forty years on, it shines. If you watch carefully, you notice the intelligence of Jewison's direction - his camera is rarely static, the editing is fluid, and Oswald Morris Oscar winning cinematorpahy, rich and luminous. And on top of that it's just a darn good and evocative piece. One of the best transcriptions of a B-way musical to the screen.

Did you know: This was the first film John Williams received an Oscar for. He would go on to win four more: JAWS, Star Wars Ep. IV, E.T., and Schindler's List. I am not sure how much of this particular piece is from the original play and how much is Williams' work.
Just in case some of you didn't know...The world famous violin soloist, Issac Stern stood on a roof and fiddled the entire instumental half of the opening credits to the 1971 film.

It's just like "Hmmm, my name is Feedler and I'm gonna be ON THE ROOF! 'FEEDLER'S ROOFING COMPANY' that has a nice ring to it"

Isaac Stern's playing is ace but what knocks me out is the music written by John Williams. He just had Jerry Bock's songs to adapt the whole movie score and what he brought us is a stand alone first class score, starting with this insane cadenza and concert-hall-worthy composition!
I offer my apologies on my ignorance, but you are saying that John Williams; the very same composer of the STAR WAR'S music did also compose the music for this uotstandin movie ???
Great music am half Jewish on my dad's side of the family, my grandad converted to the episcopal church to marry My grandma, who was Catholic and she also converted to Episcopalian
John Williams is credited not for composing but for adapting and conducting the score, which he did brilliantly. While it's possible that Williams composed the overture's cadenza, it's just as possible it was composed by Jerry Bock, who wrote additional music for the film. The remainder of the music, beginning at 1:06, derives from the stage show, and can be heard heard on the 1964 Broadway cast CD as "The Wedding Dance" and on the 1967 London cast CD as "The Bottle Dance".
He's playing double stops. Very difficult to do. He probably started playing the violin when he was 3. Sounds like a child protégé. When you add in all the other instruments, it's amazing. The final chord is a pizzacato, harmonic!
Every time, and really mean every SINGLE time that I listen to this brilliant piece at about 2:26, I find myself slapping my knee to its captivating syncopated rhythm. Unreal...absolutely unreal.
I had a cassette tape of Fiddler when I was 12 and played the entracte for my chorus class as an example. The teacher was jazzed that a student was interested in musicals. Since then, I've worn out the cassette, a vinyl album and played the VHS, CD and DVD countless times. This musical is timeless.

@dzcomposer The theme in the opening comes from Jerry Bock's original music in the play. Williams decided he needed additional music for the opening scenes and the credits, so he wrote an original cadenza and a set of variations. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether Issac Stern created some of his violin cadenzas for his solo - but the bulk of the work certainly was Williams. (He would do the same almost 20 years later for Itzhak Perlman for Schindler's List - another great violin work.)
