    That "drum roll" was an Avi bass drop that the mic couldn't handle. When they did this concert everyone was suffering from a 7 hour jet lag that had Mitch completely exhausted and hyper at the same time.

    Two things: The piece they do in the beginning is the motet (German: Motette) "Christus factus est" by Anton Bruckner. As far as I know, Kaplan arranged this for the four of them. You can see another version of this and "Aha!" here: th-cam.com/video/bAZkLqnrryk/w-d-xo.html - The sound quality is much better, and while Mitch doesn't go as wild as here, his performance has the same vocal intensity. I also like the following cover with a nice duet between Kevin and Avi.

    They still do this in concert, I saw them perform it three weeks ago, and Mitch always kills it, but there will always be something about this particular performance. In fact, Mitch in every video from this particular concert makes my brain turn to mush. So anything from Singapore Star Vista 2016. This is one of my favorite things to see reactions to, and you did not disappoint. I think the word you were looking for at the beginning was simply choral. I don’t think they ever professionally recorded that, but you might want to check out “Light in the Hallway,” a beautiful original PTX song composed primarily by Scott, for his nephew I believe, but Scott asked Avi to sing lead on it. It’s quite beautiful and relaxing.

    • @rlhcat7662
      @rlhcat7662 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes - I was going to suggest Light in the Hallway for him to put on his list of things to listen to at night. It helped me fall asleep many times. It's like Avi is singing you a lullaby - what more can you ask for?

      Agreed, I have seen a few of the other recordings that the person who uploaded this one also uploaded...they are all awesome. What is interesting is you can also kinda tell when the speaker system suffered some kind of damage from Avi's bass.

    And Scott & Kirstie syncopated in the background hold it all together!

  • @hawkeyescoffee6399
    @hawkeyescoffee6399 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think what is crazyier about this performance than Mitch's insane vocals is that there is seemingly only this one video from thatvconcert that has yet to be found online. Whether there are people whonrecorded it but for whatever reason decided to keep it to themselves, or they didn't think the audionquality was good enough, we willnlikely never know, but the person who uploaded this did the world a big favour because we needed this performance. It wasn't the only time they did it,and as others have said, they stillndo it with Matt's bass, but there has never been a performance quite like this one where Mitch just becomes otherworldly thanks to red bull and jet lag. It is so sad that the audio is as it is, but it seems to be more down to Avi having partially destroyed the speaker system because some of their recordings ofnthis concert prior to this don't have as bad a distortion.
    There is a studio version of AHA! With an official vid, it was done for spooky season, I believe. It isn't on a level with this live performance, it it was still pretty great and a fun vid with it lol.
    If you want another impressive Mitch display, without the audio issues, check out their cover of Gold.

    Although the audio isn't great I consider us very lucky that we even have this...the odds of someone happening to record it and the visuals are very good so you can see his expressions and everything. I was always worried about it getting taken down if the person closed their channel down but luckily so many people have reacted to it it will live forever on TH-cam

  • @rlhcat7662
    @rlhcat7662 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    So glad you did this! This video is subtitled "Where's Kevin" because almost every reactor asks that early on. The reason for the opening choral piece was that Kevin was playing cello in the prior song, Papaoutai, and needed a couple minutes to put it away. During Avi's solo, you see Mitch move to center stage, Scott followed and Kevin came onstage next to Scott. It's a true shame that the recorder never showed the whole stage after Mitch got started. All those crazy beats and rattles and whooshes are Kevin going crazy. The opening piece was suggested by Avi, who had sung it with a prior group. The Trio had also sung in various choral groups before so it was easy for them pick up. Some will say that Avi broke the sound system, but I've heard other recordings from this same concert and the speakers were fine. It's just that, as you suggested, the phone mic couldn't take Avi and Kevin's abuse.

    • @rlhcat7662
      @rlhcat7662 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      By the way, the opening piece is "Christus Factus Est" by Anton Bruckner. Here is a link to a wonderful cover of it by the Bristol Cathedral Choir: th-cam.com/video/i6fAT3iGRWc/w-d-xo.html

  • @danielcarter837
    @danielcarter837 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Scott and Kirstin doing all the syncopated background parts, with Kevin just going off, is hard to do in a studio environment where you can do it over and adjust things electronically in mixing. The difficulty of doing this live is about a 20 on a scale of 1 to 10. Crowd noise, sound delays (just a fact with sound traveling through cords and wi-fi) the adrenaline of being in front of a crowd, and anything else that can happen live, this is a whole other level talent and discipline. If any of them get off track or off beat doing this song it could turn into a train wreck in a hurry. I don't think there are too many people, outside of these special five, that could do this and do it that well.

  • @ruth2141
    @ruth2141 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The beginning is a choral setting of the Latin motet "Christus Factus Est" by 19th century classical composer Anton Bruckner. Not gospel but classical sacred choral music in church Latin. I don't know of any recording by Pentatonix but you'll find recordings by classical choirs. Bruckner wrote three settings; this is the third and most popular. Here Pentatonix only sings one minute of the five minute piece. Avi sang the piece in college and loved it. Translation: "Christ became obedient for us unto death". I have sung a LOT of sacred choral music so if you want any recommendations let me know.

      Avi was an opera/classical voice major at Mount San Antonio College in California prior to PTX, and had been offered a position as a bass/basso profundo with the Los Angeles Opera when he was approached to join PTX. He was in 3 different vocal groups at MtSAC, including a chamber choir, which is where he learned "Christus Factus Est" and obviously it stuck with him. Here's an actual video of his chamber choir performing it. Avi is in the back row, with lots of hair and a beard. He was about 20 at the time. th-cam.com/video/BIn-wM5sVM0/w-d-xo.html

    Mitch was jet lagged and they had to perform almost immediately, so instead of his usual one Red Bull he drank two Red Bulls. Mitch should never drink more than one Red Bull. Anyway, apparently all the caffeine and sugar hit about the time "Aha" began, and the rest is history.

  • @Blue-rl5dp
    @Blue-rl5dp ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That 'drum roll' sound was actually the speakers not keeping up with Avi's super low note. There's a couple of other really small moments of this fluttering bass sound. He's blown out speakers before and promoters learned to make sure venues had good ones. These almost didn't make it. 😆
    If you want to hear the very best thing to come out of Mitch Grassi's mouth listen to him do "Your Power" from a rooftop. th-cam.com/video/0mSMqkBArxk/w-d-xo.html Proof that he's not really human. (I think he's one of the Fey from the hollow hills.)

    This performance is also known as as ‘where’s Kevin’. Kevin was putting his chello away so isn’t seen in the video. He returns when AVI did those low notes. AVI blew up the speakers with those last notes so the rest of the performance the sound is a little distorted. AVI did that growl. 😊

    The first part of this is a Latin choral piece, can't remember the name of it. They did it as a filter before Aha! Because Kevin had just been playing his cello and was putting it away backstage. Mitch was reportedly high on Red Bulls because of jet lag. The entire concert was on fire, but you rarely see anyone reacting to the rest of the concert.
    There is an official recording of this, and although good, this one was definitely special. The official one is very fun and worth watching as well.

The recorded version of AHA is good but doesn't have the crazy 2 red bull Mitch that you get in this one...lol. Another song I'd recommend from them is "The Prayer" for another amazing Mitch hit. The drumroll was Avi...lol. I think one of the best ones for Avi is his song "Change on the rise" He's doing his own thing now and you can truly see what he's capable of. If you want a well-recorded live version, there's the Hollywood Bowl performance recording from fall 2022 here: th-cam.com/video/DHwF54IL2Ys/w-d-xo.html. "Aha!" is a very strange song; it seems foreboding but it isn't clear why. The lyrics don't make much sense. So when Pentatonix covered it they provided an official video that was intended to make sense of it. Then they made sure Avi did lots of overtone singing to emphasize the eerie feelings and totally hammed it up in the video. And be sure to watch all the way to the outro; the video isn't over when the singing ends.

    If you weren't thinking about Gregorian Chants or sacred choral music, maybe it was Madrigal music. I really wish there was a recorded version of the prelude to this. Might I suggest the studio version of Avi Kaplan's "Full Moon" to help you sleep? For me, his acoustic version of that song (Live at TH-cam Space LA) helps me to peacefully center and fall asleep (even though it is just him and a guitar). The studio version is full of interweaving, layered harmonies (all Avi).

    I’d love to see them do a collaboration with Adam Lambert. That would be awesome!

    I totally agree they should do the song from Fifth Element. Anyone want to start a petition ?? They probably would be the only ones who could do it real justice, and I think it's right up their alley. There are two songs I recommend you should check out. First "Gold" BUT watch part of the original by Kiiara. Second, " Come Along" and again watch the original by Cosmo Sheldrake. Notice the differences and the up-grade that PTX does. Enjoy !!!!!

    You want to hear a guy sing the diva song??? Try Dimash Quidabergen, as he can replicate that song note for note, and this song Wasn’t written for the human voice.

    I just left their concert in Irvine, Ca, and it was a great time. I loved every min and didn't want it to end. I was at the Hollywood Bowl last year, and you can find a good recording for their Daft punk.

    I love love love your reactions to PTX. THANK YOU for your enthusiastic reaction. Keep 'em coming! He used to Red Bull before a concert. Not sure if he still does. I heard him sing this during their summer tour. The audience clapped during that high note this summer as well. They changed the opening since Avi is no longer with them.
