Here in the UK, the Ally Z1 Extreme currently costs £400 (new) on Amazon and other major retailers (Black Friday deal). While the Ally X cost's twice as much at £800. As for the other major PC handhelds, both the 512GB OLED Steam Deck and the Legion Go cost £480. While the MSI Claw costs £450. So at least over here in the UK, the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme is not only the cheapest, but also probably is the best value deal out of all of the major PC handhelds at the moment. While on the other-hand the Ally X is by far the worst deal out of them. Especially when you consider you could buy 2x OG Ally's for the same price as a Ally X.
@fafski1199 here in the US, the difference is about $200 as of right now with the sales. There's no denying the bang for your buck that you get with the Ally at the price point it's at right now, but let's not forget that the Ally launched at $700. The Ally X launches at $800. The Ally is old tech, and the bump in performance on the Ally X is definitely there. The decision on what you get or want to get is based on your personal desires and what you see as fiscally responsible. Like I said at the end, if you're plugged in, then you should go with the Ally. If you don't want battery anxiety and the best in FPS and cooling, then go with the Ally X.
@baldlyrudy One question I have you see I'm looking for a handheld device that has faster fps. I do care about the graphics, but I just want something that can handle call of duty and cyberpunk without any frame rates drop or graphics problems So if you were me looking for that. would you recommend the asus rog z1 extreme. OR the asus rog ally X?
I’m going to wait until I can find one for under $400 until I upgrade. The Z1E is perfectly competent for now and I’m eagerly waiting for the Switch 2.
This is one of those situations where I wish we could combine the best features of competing products. The Steam Deck OLED’s screen with the Ally X’s internals would be fantastic. Maybe the Steam Deck’s trackpads too, because Windows really needs an input method other than just a touch screen, and I don’t want to have to carry a mouse around everywhere.
Just got the original Ally the other day because of a great Black Friday sale at Best Buy, whereas the Ally X was full price. So far the OG Ally has been incredible and I am unbelievably happy with it
I do not regret going from SD Oled to Rog Ally X. Battery and Performance are solid. Armoury Crate is underrated and really does a lot of the heavy lifting. Steam Deck UI of course looks better and easy to jump in a game, but when we talk about desktop experience, Microsoft is still better. Don’t need to go through hoops to install stuff in Konsole or find specific folders. Although OLED looks nice, VRR and be able to get more performance on AAA titles or higher end emulation is nice to have.
I bought my ROG ally last week and besides the initial setup and growing pains I'm extremely impressed so far. I had the steam deck lcd for about a year now and I wanted an upgrade and the performance in more modern games is night and day from my steam deck. I think my steam deck is gonna be my go to for emulation and older games while my ally is my go to for modern/ more demanding games
My policy has always been DO NOT buy entry level unupgradeable mobile devices like laptops, phones, and handhelds. So just don't buy the non-Z1X version original Ally. You'll more likely find yourself wanting to play heavier titles during the lifespan of the device.
@Gamer4Wife I saw the £400 price for the original and I'm thinking should I go for it 🤔 I know the battery is garbage but I honestly believe 90% of the use would be sofa chilling so I can just plug it in.
@duppy9012 what did you pick? I am currently in the UK and still trying to decide what to do, if going for the z1e or the ally x, currently the ally X is almost doubling the price (800 gbp vs 400 gbp of the z1e) I really want to go for the ally x for the battery duration but I still feel that is crazy that I could get 2 z1e for the same price of the ally X
HUGE difference. The extra VRAM makes such a difference. No matter the VRAM combination on my Ally Extreme (4gb, 6gb, 8gb, auto) some games are a stuttering mess with horrible texture pop in. The Ally X cleans most of this up (Last of Us Remastered is a perfect example). Battery life! You can finally have more flexibility with tdp witbout being stuck near a wall socket! The Ally X was what the Ally was supposed to be upon release. +Twice the battery size + 24gb of RAM (crank up those texture settings without sweating or low texture pop in/hitching) + X2 USB ports (thank GOD!) + SD card slot that doesn't burn out (my SD slot died on my Ally Extreme) + Full size SSD! Upgraded to 4tb
@@misters7413 Ended up returning it. The battery seemed to have degraded. Everything else was perfect and could have replaced it but don't have the time.
At this point I feel like the smartest move would be to wait for the next generation since there's already talks of the Z2 Extreme models potentially releasing early next year.
Our local electric store in Germany has made a 20% off of everything they sell. got an Rog Ally X for 720€ after tax. thats like 750$. the normal price for the ally X over here is like 890$ after tax.
Great video! I have the Ally and I rarely use it because of the battery. I like to use it with my AR glasses but it's hard to do with only 40 minutes of battery. You hit on every point that I was wondering about. Thanks!
4:05 I do think $150 is overall too much to consider having like 10 to 15 more frames in bigger games. I will say it does kind of suck having everything low on Miles Morales at 720p to just get 60 FPS in turbo mode, but at the same time I'm hoping that buying the lowest end model right now will be the better move in the long run to then Make a big upgrade to the best possible PC handheld when that comes out
Just picked one up for Black Friday after having the steam deck for about 7months. I hated it at first but once I figured out how to use all the settings I love this thing now.
Debating as both are on sale at best buy. Almsot got the Ally Z1 Extreme a fee weeks ago when they did a gaming sale but. I wasnt sure if the price increase to rhe ally X was worth it or not.
@@knowwherefamous9067 I noticed the sound on my ally x wasn’t near as good as my og ally z1x. The right R2 button would randomly fire weapons without me touching it and some times the screen would snap to the left in game which was weird. I ultimately returned it because it was creaking while holding and the L1/R1 buttons made a lot of noise.
7:00 erm actually there is something to do about batteries to make them less heavy (silicon-carbon anode battery used for example in the red magic 10 pro)
If you’re into traveling and using your system on battery then go with the Ally X. Other than that for the price the Ally Z1 Extreme is the better buy. I have the Ally z1 Extreme with a 4tb ssd installed and it works great. There’s grips that can make the Ally easy to hold. Anker battery to help with travel. After paying 600 for an Ally with official case and WD black 2tb ssd I have no urge to pay 700-800 dollars for what little the X gives me over the Z1 Extreme. Once Asus drops a new Ally with a more powerful chipset is when I will finally upgrade. For new buyers I would go with the X. If you have the Z1 Extreme the orange is not worth the squeeze.
The Ally X is definitively what the Ally needed to be from the beginning. Having both myself, I don't even really touch my Ally anymore since I got the X. And I don't really play heavy titles on them, the second USB port, and them both being USB 4 is alone enough to recommend the X over the base ally. And the only point I can really take to suggest someone go with the base ally is if they are only playing 2d titles and emulating older consoles because you can save a ton of money going for the base Z1 and get a great emulation beast with an awesome screen. On that same note, for those same people that are focusing on emulation I really kind of recommend getting a Steam Deck instead, weather you get the older LCD model, or the Newer OLED model, it is also just a beast of an emulation handheld, and you never have to faff about with windows, aside from a little setup time in desktop mode to get the emulators installed, the rest of your time is in gaming mode and just enjoying the games. Yea, you can setup the ally with bazzite, or autolaunch steam big picture mode, but it's just not the same. Waiting for the eventual release of SteamOS for everyone.
@@BacklogDrifter sounds like you had it in sleep mode- every ROG owner knows you have to switch to hibernate or just completely shutdown when not in use
When I went to ASUS HQ, I wanted the Ally X to have the Strix Point chipset in the handheld. At the time, the reps said that it was too expensive. Hopefully that changes soon.
Yup. Personally, I understand that good, new tech is pricey. But from a business sense it wouldn't be wise for ASUS to push past the $1,000 mark. At least, that's what I think. I think $600-$800 is ideal.
I brought my rog ally z1 extreme earlier today for 399 brand new and its incredible I see no sense in paying 800 for a small increase in performance, being able to stream game pass as well as play natively in insane
Is the Argos one the z1 extreme? Wasn't sure if it would be the standard z1. If the only real difference is battery then an extra £400 simply isn't worth it, especially when most of the use will be sat on the sofa so it can be plugged in...think I'll go for it.
Is this worth getting if I own a steam deck? I was considering getting it for fps and 3rd person shooter games. And maybe try and use it for photo editing if that’s possible which I’m sure it is since it’s a windows handheld.
What’s your opinion for someone like myself who has the original non oled steam deck but wants to try a windows handheld too? It would be nice to get something with a little more power than my steam deck and runs windows. (I like modding games and it’s a little harder on a steam deck). Would the z1 extreme be a noticeable bump over the OG steam deck, or would it be close enough to justify getting the ally x? The Black Friday price on the z1 is pretty tempting but don’t think i can justify the price increase to the ally x. Thoughts? Also im not worried about battery life as i mostly game from home.
I think the Ally Z1 Extreme is a nice bump with 10-15% performance improvement across the board. And you can install Bazzite OS if you want the same SteamOS vibe. At the price they have for Black Friday, I think it's totally worth it. I did a video comparing the Steam Deck to the Ally Z1 Extreme: th-cam.com/video/Qc3pQeJcAng/w-d-xo.html
Haha. That's fair. I was talking to another TH-camr about this exact issue. Mine is storage of the footage and shooting at 4K120. My camera only hits 4K30.
I bought the rog ally 1st gen off eBay and yesterday had a lot of tearing of the screen so I had to reset it when I had my steam deck I’ve never had that problem and my warranty returned is out of the window I should have just waited and bought the rog x from Best Buy maybe I’ll see how how it performs and trade it n are sell it
Well, ASUS said they fixed the issue, which is why they extended the warranty to 2 years. But I understand the sentiment. I haven't had any issues with my Ally X. My Ally's SD card reader finally died when I was testing things out for this video. Take it as you will. 😅
You'll see a 10-15% average (sometimes 20%+) increase in performance across the board with the Ally Z1 Extreme. The difference between the Ally Z1 and the Z1 Extreme is around 5-10%.
Can you use external GPUs with the ally X? Or is the only option the Ally Z1X with their proprietary mobile GPU? And is the ally Z1X with the external GPU better performance wise than the ally X?
No, not worth upgrade if you already have Ally Extreme. Gaining 2-4 fps isn't going to be noticeable. You should consider upgrading if there is at least 50% performance gain. Ex. 40fps > 60fps, 60fps > 90fps
I agree with you the grip isn’t that much better over the original ally. The oled deck and msi claw have the best ergonomics to date. I returned my x for other reasons and resorted back to my z1x with ally x battery mod. If you go back to a windows handheld try out bazzite. It’s essentially steam os for the windows handhelds and it’s amazing to use. That’s how my ally is set up and it feels just like my previous deck oled.
Hi just got a Rog Ally X on a deal , I have a Rog ally but it was purchased launched day , first the micro ssd died outside warranty and now the right thumb stick rattles when I push it upwards, but hopefully my new one ok the new one was used for 4 days and kept in a spignen hard case, I got it for £600: as I am in the Uk , thanks the video
I have a steam deck and an rog Ally Z1 extreme. So far I like Windows on a handheld because I can do everything with it. But for some reason the simplicity of steam OS makes turning on the system and jumping into a game. Very quick and simple, but for some reason I really wish my rog Ally battery lasted way longer and I feel steam deck Is amazing! But I can feel how underpowered it is, even though it's running many of the games My rog Ally runs but at slower frame rates. I just wish Sony your Xbox would just make a dedicated handheld that has all the functionality that a steam deck or rog Ally has in the gaming space, but just with the features we're used to on a console now I see why Nintendo made the move they made and have been such a big success. Nintendo are innovators and that's what's missing on the software side in the gaming industry. The hardware seems to be okay, but the software implementations are years behind where they should be, especially with Windows on a handheld.. What the hell is Microsoft doing? They had a whole tablet division and still can't figure this out lol 😂
350$ for Ally, 450$ Ally Z1 extreme & 700$ for Ally X. For 350$ I'd love to get back into PC handheld, but I'm unsure I started on the original Steam Deck. In my opinion it could have more powerful, but ultimately the screen crapped out. PLEASE HELP
If you're trying to get something more powerful than the Steam Deck, then go with the Z1 Extreme. As for whether to get the Ally or Ally X, it all depends on whether or not you want the best hardware out there as well as a heck of a battery. If you're planning on playing only plugged in, then go with the original Ally Z1 Extreme.
Do you think the rog ally is a good option for a beginner? Like I want to play BO6 and other Triple A games. Also don’t mind the graphics if they look Okay/mid.
You briefly touched on the eGPU connection between the two. I understand wanting the open source nature of an eGPU solution, but the performance difference between the 2 is staggering. The XG Mobile interface makes roughly twice the performance increase of any eGPU solution you could have with a standard eGPU. Thoughts?
More of a want than need Here are some solid reasons not to buy this gaming device. 1)Crappy Screen,if you're used to looking at OLED%26AMOLED displays you will instantly hate it.even browsing internet and watching movies on this device is not a good idea, they really dropped the ball hard by going with a basic LCD display,an eyesore to AMOLED %26OLED phone users. 2)poor battery life, don't even think about taking this device outside without its charger coz you will need it,the battery goes down like a timer even when you are not playing games, imagine how fast it'd drain once you switch to gaming mode. 3)no detachable controls, unlike the legion go you cant use this device like a tablet, 4)you feel like you're compromising on too many things just to enjoy a below par gaming experience. 5)cheap built quality, you feel like you're using a cheap plastic device thats running on windows 11,to be honest,I've had a better experience when I laid my hands on a brick gaming console back in the 90s. 6)your peers will have a hard time looking at the device while you're gaming because the LCD screen dents the viewing experience from side angles, the visuals look distorted. 7)the games crash most of the time making you wonder what's wrong with the device, also this device doesn't support all the games that are featured in the Xbox game store. 8)the phone you are using now probably has a better speaker, screen resolution and screen type making this 700$ purchase absolutely useless. 9)the obvious heating issues. 10)The price, the device is over priced, shouldn't be over 400$ for what you're getting,a sub standard gaming experience at the expense of compromising on so many things, think smart, its not worth the money.
If you don't have either, then you have options. If you have the original Ally, then its 100% dependent on what the end user wants out of their experience. 1. There are pros and cons to both display techs. It's significantly less expensive to have an LCD screen with VRR and a high refresh rate of 120hz. Look at monitors. OLED monitors with VRR and high refresh rates are $600+ on average. That's basically the cost of the entire handheld. To complain of it not having OLED is a nitpick. But I understand that sentiment. I wanted and OLED screen on the Ally X. And yes, Valve has an OLED screen on their Steam Deck, but it's 90Hz and no VRR support. There are tradeoffs, especially if you want to keep that $400 price point you mentioned. Like I said, pros and cons. 2. Poor battery life? That's exactly what was addressed with the Ally X. I flew across the Atlantic ocean and played for 7.5 hours on one battery charge on the Ally X. 3. If you want detachable controllers, then go with the Legion Go. No one's stopping you. But I never use them. They're more of a gimmick for me than anything else. Great concept, but it's barely needed for the games I play. 4. "you feel like you're compromising too many things just to enjoy a below-par gaming experience" Go play on a desktop for a "par gaming experience". Lol. It's a handheld. Compromises are made in the form factor alone. 5. Again, piss poor point. You're starting to sound like a fanboy here. Go back to your "brick gaming console" from the 90s if it felt better built. No one's stopping you here. 6. Actually no. Vertically, the angles aren't that great, I'll give you that. Horizontally, they're more than fine. But why would you have friends watch you play games on a handheld that, by your definition, needs to be plugged into an outlet at all times? What is this? A Nintendo Switch Commercial? Are you going to be on the rooftops of New York too? 7. That's a lie. The Z1 Extreme chipset is the most stable out of all the PC handhelds. 8. Ah. Yes. The classic "Let's compare a $1200+ piece of tech that is subsidized to a piece of tech that is half the cost, not subsidized, and complain how one is better than the other". 9. Heating issues have been addressed on the X by thermal engineering. The Ally does get hot, but not as hot as the Legion Go. MSI Claw is comparable to the Ally. 10. Price shouldn't be over $400? So let's look at the market as a whole. You can get a Nintendo Switch at $350. You can get a Steam Deck normally at $500-ish (currently the LCD model is on sale for ~$330 on a Black Friday Sale). Both perform worse in terms of rendering and game performance, but they should cost the same? Okay bud. That's definitely a skewed way of looking at tech, but let me simplify it. Typically, better performance costs more. I say typically, because you have Ayaneo and GPD devices that are usually over $1,000 and perform similarly to the Legion Go, ROG Ally, and Ally X. If you want quality, you have to pay for it. If you don't want to, then wait a few years, buy old tech, and enjoy. I don't control the market. That's what the market has decided as a whole, and PC gamers are buying it. Don't know what else to tell you. A lot of the points that you bring up don't really bring much merit to the conversation. Instead, it simply sounds like you don't like the handheld, and that's fine. You're entitled to your opinion. These are all, at best, nitpicks. That's it. Nothing really brings out a dealbreaker for me or most of the people that are here. That being said, maybe the Steam Deck OLED is the best option for you. It's close to the price point that you're looking at, has the OLED screen, and has decent heating dissipation. It's not as powerful as a Z1 Extreme handheld, but I'm sure you'll be fine with that. Here's a video on why the Steam Deck OLED is still the best for most people: th-cam.com/video/2ziOcbryP1U/w-d-xo.html
I'm more than happy with my OG Ally Z1 Extreme. I picked it up used but mint in box for £250, when similar used mint in box Ally X is £600. No way is the improvements worth the price difference if you have a good power bank. When the Ally 2 comes out I will look at it again and see if the new generation is worth the extra money. Either that or the prices of the Ally X will come down and I'll make the upgrade as the price difference won't be as big.
They're all great options. Personally, I prefer the Ally out of the three. Some people prefer the Legion Go because of the 1600p 144hz display. It technically has faster RAM than the Ally, too. They tend to be a bit more pricey than the Ally. Driver support on the Go tends to be slower than the Ally. Also, I don't like the ergonomics on the Legion Go, but that's a very personal preference. I guess it depends on what you're looking for.
I personally believe it would be more logical to purchase the Ally Z1 Extreme for $449 and use the money you saved for the Zotac Zone, which is rumored to have an upgradable RAM system. Money isn't a problem for me, but I can't justify a $300 price increase for a 10% performance gain. As for the larger battery, you can compromise with a 40W power bank to get you on par with the X. If you spend another $130 you can pick up a 2 TB SSD and you'll have 5-10% less performance than the X...
@eddiexavier5087 it means it's using laptop ram... Regardless, how would being able to upgrade indicate the performance of the ram? Are you stupid or something?
@@_BBAGG_ what makes it an upgrade over either? Both are more powerful and with bazzite can enjoy steam os ....the deck does have the better display though
@@gcforreal For me personally, The OLED display, much better battery life and better form factor are what make me enjoy using it over my Ally. I have a PC if I want my games to look good, the steam deck Oled has everything I need from a portable device
PC handhelds : Rog Ally 2, Legion Go 2 & Steam Deck 2 vs Console handhelds : Switch 2, PSP 2/ PS Vita 2, Xbox handheld. Very interesting. For me Switch 2 & Rog Ally 2 from each camp 👍
The Ally Z1 is still a really damn good portable. FSR works well with it on games, even on games like Blackops 6 where I can 80fps. I would like to upgrade to the Ally X but I just don't think it is worth the money at the moment. Can't lose with either of them!
These two run Windows, like a normal PC. So you can play games from Steam, Epic, or Xbox Game Pass with ease. You can play any game that you can play on a normal Desktops PC, but as if it were a handheld instead of mouse and keyboard. It's like playing a game on a desktop with a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard. The quality is super there between a PS4 Pro and a PS5, depending on the optimization of the games you play. And the tech allows for upscaling to happen. Hope that helps.
Additional ram doesnt make the battery last longer.... if anything it would make it consume more energy. 70 grams is over 10% weight increase. Sorry not a fan of this review. The key thing about this device is the bigger battery and more ram. Was expecting side by side on the same games to show the true difference. Was expecting this information in the first 10minutes. Didnt get it by that time so stopped watching and found a different video, also makes me want to avoid your videos in the future. Do what you want with my feedback.
That's alright. You're entitled to your opinion. I should let people know about timestamps, since there's a small section talking about that. But it's not a side by side comparison with pixel peeping and what not. So....sorry?

Great video! Very useful info!

You briefly touched on the eGPU connection between the two. I understand wanting the open source nature of an eGPU solution, but the performance difference between the 2 is staggering. The XG Mobile interface makes roughly twice the performance increase of any eGPU solution you could have with a standard eGPU.

More of a want than need
Here are some solid reasons not to buy this gaming device.

Yeah. Same with Asus gaming laptops.
Hi, I want to buy a PC Handheld, Which one should I get? Msi claw, Asus Rog ally or Legion go? And thank you.

@@baldlyrudy Its ok but the title says ASUS ROG Ally VS Ally X.... Just thought I would give feedback since it seems your channel is growing based off of sub count.
@glmorten no worries. Much appreciated. 👍

Honestly feeling like an idiot having bought the Z1 Extreme 🥲
Nah. The Ally Z1 Extreme is still a solid handheld.
