sprinting wasn't added until Beta 1.8 along with the new hunger system. Also you can still double tap "W" to run. In fact I wasn't even aware you could sprint using "ctrl" until now lol.

im pretty sure you can sprint by double tapping W since on older versions of minecraft you can sprint like that, but you cant press ctrl to sprint.
there's no sprint in alpha
