Their debut is more of a hard rock album. Sounds like if Deep Purple and Uriah Heep had a baby. Ride the Sky, Everybody's Clown, Toxic Shadows and my fav Keep Goin are great tracks.
I 100% agree: never heard of them, assumed they'd be metal. First minute or so I was a bit doubtful, then it caught me. Will definitely be investigating further.
Yes, I was already familiar with Lucifer's Friend, having had all their albums for several years.
Great German band with a good English singer (John Lawton, who was to become David Byron's successor in Uriah Heep in the autumn of '76 until fall 1979). Their albums cover several genres: hard rock, progressive rock and even jazz fusion. Banquet is their most progressive but their previous three and their next (Mind Exploding) are also very good.
If you were ever going to listen to one of Uriah Heep's three studio albums with John Lawton, then start with Firefly!
Really looking forward to more from em
@@JustJP Great news!👍
This is a really good tune. Have to check out more of their music! Awesome tune.
Ive been waiting for someone to find this gem. Part of my personal vinyl collection. Excellent reaction!
Glad you enjoyed it Mark! Thank you so much
I’m a fan of this band. I’m pretty sure I recommended Ride the sky from their first album a while back
Yes , listen to whole thing . This album is a masterpiece .
Definitely will be more to come :)
Common! I suggested this song too! haha
Stunned? I love this German band and bassist Dieter Horns is one of my favorites in life. The central part of the song, with that instrumental overlay that even has something similar to a clarinet with wah-wah, I affectionately nicknamed "pandemonium".
Super cool to see you cover this band! They had a very interesting evolution, with the first album being an early metal ripper, the 2nd a dive into full-on prog rock, the 3rd (from what I've heard) more of a straightforward rock direction and this being their excursion into jazz-rock!
I honestly don't usually recommend anything as you already cover so much cool stuff on the channel already. These guys are also funnily one of those bands who have always flown under the radar for whatever reason. Not sure why...
I've always loved John Lawton's vocals, he just has such a great voice. The "Firefly" album he did with Uriah Heep is also great.
I hope you continue this album listen, and also check out the first 2 at some point. I highly recommend those!
For sure Psychic! Definitely will be doing more :)
Sounded like a jazzy version of Uriah Heep at times. Also have heard of them as another early 70s hard rock band and wasn't expecting this. Thoroughly enjoyable.
I don't know why LF isn't talked in the same circles as Purple, Sabbath, Heep, Budgie etc. They can bring the hard rock/doom metal withe the best of them. Especially the 1st album. Keep Going!
One of their best tracks! 🎉
Banquet is their most Jazzy record they are all over the place from proto Metal, Jazz, Prog, Mainstream Rock und even 80s Pop Rock - It´s not the Olny record they used Horns and stuff - and my user Name is German, had a TH-cam Chanel for a while in german - it´s just "Whisky talk out of peters cupboard" ;-) Most of the musicians only worked in Germany for German language Bands - Some played with Peter Maffay and Udo Lindenberg - all more Mainstream German Rock. I Think my favorit Lucifers Friend record is Mind Explosion - the last one, bevore Lawton left for Uriah Heep
This is my favorite by them, but their others are worth checking out, the last 2 in late 2010's are good too (Too Late To Hate and Black Moon). Sadly the band is effectively done, since Dieter Horns (the bass player) and John Lawton (the singer) both passed away since.
They were so good, but as I said on your reaction to the next song on this album, I believe that the band's name was what held them back. --Dan
Definitely a nice surprise.
Speaking of Lucifer, you should also check out the bands Coven and Black Widow.
Hi Justin. Dave from London, 'Round Midnight. Sorry to be one of your 34k subscribers and not recommend this track or band. I like to think I know a lot of early 70s rock, but like you this is completely new to me. And I agree, it's terrific. A sort of Blood, Sweat & Tears meets jazz fusion. Really looking forward to you playing more from this aptly named album, Banquet.
Never heard of them, really strangely appealing, keyboard player is fire!.
Apparently, these German gents are chameleons. If Wikipedia can be believed! But from the comments, it rings true. I've missed this band, back then. So more exploration is definitely merited!😈&😎🖤! Peace & Love.
First time I've heard it (and it was good). I've seen references to the band, but at a time when metal wasn't looking interesting to me, so I had to wait for it to appear on JustJP to correct the error. (It didn't help that the name of the band sounded like they might be peddling some stupid theology. If not safety matches.) Thanks.
In my defense, I did recommend CIRCUS DEVILS (whose name is written as shouting).
They have songs like *Schedules of the Dead* , you know? th-cam.com/video/JZDwUgaL0Ik/w-d-xo.html
'Ole Audiophile to JustJP: I'll answer your query/thanx: typically when stuff like this happens, it's because the band in question has piss-poor management which follows with very poor circulation. Most of us never heard of or seen this album in print at a record store, I did not myself (I saw Lucifer's Friend, just not that particular album). Very common ailment of the times back then. You found two folks twice lucky.
We played the first very frequently. I definitely would have purchased this had I heard it. This is why I get angry at radio stations who get this stuff for free, then off it without even a listen.
FTL 4Me. Their Name put me off but as u say, musically Totally Surprising.
Oh the singer took a West End turning after a few lemonades down the pub karaoke !
The music's pretty dramatic though. Better than Godspell. (don't u dare 😀)
Um...it was OK. Can't get any more enthused than that, I'm afraid.
An interesting if bitty listen, with some great playing. I partic loved the bass. Great start, funky as fud, but all good things come to an end. In this case when the singing started... The voice was ok, but the musical shift in these sections seemed dated, and a bit cabaret. Ideally it should've stayed an instrumental, needs a decent remix with the vocal sections dropped. For me it'd be a huge improvement.
