Giant Scale Tomahawk Aviation T-28 Trojan: DID HE SNAP A WING?

- This pilot had a VERY CLOSE CALL at the Wings Over Chino RC model event sponsored by the Pomona Valley Model Airplane Club when his WING ACTUALLY VISIBLY BUCKLED during a four point roll with his massive 1:4.5 scale (2.75m Wingspan) Tomahawk T-28 Trojan!
The Tomahawk Aviation T-28 Trojan is a VERY expensive aircraft to have a wing snap:

The owner/pilot of this model was very fortunate! Be sure to watch until the end of the video to see a picture of the actual damage. Cheers everyone! - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
Dude that was insane
Right?!
"It went the way its not supposed to go" Words of wisdom from the best RC video announcer anywhere. I can't believe he was able to carry on and land it. Most don't get that chance.
Thank you so much for the kinds words my friend! And YES, I totally agree, the pilot certainly got a chance to save it, a chance that most others probably wouldn't get...Cheers!
Oodles of luck 😮 I'm happy to see it land safety 😊
@@8poundquark Indeed my friend 😁👍
Damn he was lucky everyone caught that and got it back down safe.
Indeed my friend!
Love those aircraft. Had 3 when I was in the Army for photo chase missions. Loved to hear them all running up at one time. Great save.
That's awesome Alan! Few people realize the Army actually had T-28's for that very reason you stated! Thank you for your service!
@@JustwingitRC We them to the bone yard and tried T34's for a while but went back after them after a couple of years. Nothing sounds like those beasts.
@@alangeddes268 For sure Alan, the T-28 is one amazing aircraft! Arguably one of North American's finest planes, it was actually designed using a modified P-51 planform...
Holy! THAT must have been a heart-stopper. Great save (and got lucky!). Though I don't think he overstressed the plane.
For sure Emanuel! I don't know, if it wasn't overstressed, I can't imagine what else it could be besides poor workmanship at the factory?
@@JustwingitRC Or poor design.
@@emanuelmota7217 Indeed...
He was very lucky to get that airplane back on the ground He should certainly check in to what's going on with the wing structure Especially if it's done it before that was unsafe To even attempt to fly it in front of a crowd
I completely agree with you my friend!
Well, that was quite a flex. Good to see it safe on the ground. 👍
For sure Steve! I couldn't believe it made it back in one piece after that 😎👍
Yikes!!! what a gorgeous plane, that was indeed a close one!
Yikes indeed my friend, would have been sad to watch that beauty go in 👍
That would've been tragic to lose such a beautiful model due to a mid-air failure. I'm pleased for the pilot that he got away with it, John!
Oh for sure Gina! That's a LOT of time assembling the kit AND money to send barreling into the dirt!
Nice to see a pattern flyer put a scale airframe through it paceses. I posted this incident over on Flying Giants to see if others may have had a similar problem.
I agree, it was graceful for sure, but she certainly didn't like that last 4-pointer! Thank you so much for posting this on Flying Giants, I certainly hope it helps others. All the best to you!
I always loved the T-28 every since I built a Pica back in the 80's and this one is a beauty. BUT for the pilot to be flying such a nice SCALE airplane in a none scale, high-G manner is a turn off, never reducing the throttle until he sees the wings flex in a negative "G" maneuver and then says, "I SAW THE SAME THING YESTERDAY". It should have been grounded and fully inspected before flying again. I'm glad it survived.
Completely agree with everything you commented, and I was surprised to hear the flight line boss say that about the wing flex! The pilot is very fortunate the model is still in one piece...
Yes, very much a turnoff. He needs a F-16 or something. Almost as bad as a Extra "hovering". Such silliness!!!
glad someone spotted that ! good call 👍👍
For sure my friend! Just a little pucker factor...😉👍
Wow! Thank God it stayed together. What a great aircraft!! Upgraded to a carbon Fiber spar? Or two?
Great flying, way to stay calm and smooth.
Thank you my friend! And yes, I agree, way to bring her down in in one piece!
@@JustwingitRC I’ve actually been thinking about wing-spars recently. Wonder why manufacturers don’t add two carbon fiber spar-tubes to these bigger models? Couldn’t hurt. Might be overkill, but definitely worth overbuilding the wings / spars and wing area. Make them super strong.
@@JustwingitRC I’d actually add a small carbon fiber tube-spar to the vertical Stab and horizontal Stab.
@@CJR505 I completely agree with you my friend! A little stronger build would go a long way. Unfortunately, cheaper is the way most companies go nowadays...
@@CJR505 Would be very prudent, and the weight wouldn't even be felt at all...
In my 37 years of flying i can say that ive never seen that before. Usually the wing leaves the aircraft lol.
I agree! That was a pretty violent snap, still can't believe she held together!
Wow, that was close! Very fortunate to get it down. Lot of $, I'd be a bit pissed...
Roger that my friend! Copy all...😎👍
Oh man...he was sure pulling some G's,but didn’t like the negative G's....very nice plane, hope they can fix it.
Thanks Rodger, it was scary to see it in person! I was thinking "that's not good!" Seems fixable, but then I didn't look at the inside either. All the best to you and the fam my friend!
Wow. He got so lucky
Yessir Roy!! Happy landings Wingman!
Yep, all it was, was pure luck!!
@@scotabot7826 I still can't believe the model held together...
"Good Save" He just landed, he didn't "save" anything!
I'd agree with that my friend...
This is a scale airplane 🙈😱😱. Not for 3D overkill!!! 😳🙈
Agreed my friend 👍
OOHWHEE!! Well, this Trojan had to throw down the sword and put up his shield!! That was alarming to see, I jumped up and was on the edge of my recliner. That'll put a man's knuts in his stomach.
I'm relieved for him that it's down safe. Thankfully, compared to what was spent, a little time, $ and parts will fix it. AH...
Well said brother, well said! I still can't believe that model held together after watching that wing flex! Yikes!
Not the plane for outside loops.
For €3,380.00 I would expect that it would be better engineered than a cheap foamy.
Indeed my friend...
From what I saw he didn't overstress the plane.
@@emanuelmota7217 Then what do you suspect it was?
@@JustwingitRC In that flight there weren't any extreme manoeuvres so unless there was something prior to this flight that we did not see then there is a major structural issue in the design or the manufacturing process.
@@dynevor6327 My only guess is that there were some fairly high-G turns and I would imagine that the model weighs quite a bit. Either way, pretty shocking to see that wing flex occur in such an expensive model...
So you mean to tell me that happened twice the day before and he flew anyway? Irresponsible. People tend to forget that RC airplanes can hurt people and cause damage.
Yessir...
