Wisdom behind Prohibition of Riba (interest) - Case study GFC | Almir Colan

  • One of the miracles of Islam are the rules of riba (interest, usury). Many students who for the first-time study these rules think they are a burden to the economy and question wisdom to why we exchange money for money in equal amounts and on the spot. Sometimes even ask if there is a place for such restrictions in a modern economy?
    In this clip, we analyze the power of Islamic economic principles regarding the ban on riba by looking at the root causes of the Global Financial Crisis.

      @@SephirothVGinterest is objectively bad, no amount of argumentation will justify it, taking more than what you have earned is unjust. In this day and age this world has reached such corruption that you cannot even escape the dust of interest. Even when you look at those whom want to be homeowners lose everything they have because of interest. Or property being taken away, or even students that cant pay off their loans. All kinds of interest is bad, wether it be simple or compound interest.

    • @SephirothVG
      @SephirothVG 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@omarhasan5037 What can be claimed without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence....aka your claim about interest being objectively bad is pointless without evidence. Interest is nothing but risk assessment. For example I am to lend out money to many different people who need that money to do something (open a business, buy a house etc..that's one of the basic functions of a bank btw..its not just a place where money is hoarded lol) and I am not 100% certain that I will get my money back. Now there are models you can follow to calculate the appropriate interest rate so that you can minimize the risk you are taking on by lending out your money. Thats more or less all what interest is and people rely on ignorance to rile others up and make money by offering bs fake knowledge.
      The Islamic system isn't any different btw. It just changes who holds the deed and relabels interest to RENT but you are STILL PAYING INTEREST. In modern context the deed of the house would be held by a third party and the money paid over to them but in Islamic banking the deed would be held by the bank itself and then the bank would charge rent (which is basically the payment + interest). So its not really any different..just smoke and mirrors to keep idiots occupied.
      Btw if you look up compound interest and see how it works...you will realise that it makes a difference but its not that big of a deal as Islamists would have you believe. If you don't believe me go take a foundational finance class yourself and LEARN for yourself how this is all calculated. I know Yale offers a free online course on Finance and it wasn't too bad....please educate yourself before you fall victim to idiots and scam artists. Btw I do agree that the student loan situation is terrible in America but thats not just because of "interest" ...its a whole can of worms I do not think I can explain right now as I already explained the basics of interest to you.

    I started recently realizing that, "freedom" doesn't just amplify the good aspects of humanity, it also amplifies the awful aspects as well, you'll often hear the terms "freedom of expression" and "freedom of speech" thrown around when people talk about freedom, but never freedom of exploitation and freedom of manipulation, that's why society needs a framework of rules that aren't based on mere whims of man, but on something rigid that can't be changed...

    A man once said, "When you have money and you want to make more money without the risk of losing some, what do you do? You lend it out on interest. The wealth then begins to accumulate with a small number of people (like our world is now). The poor get poorer and the rich get richer.
    Even if the person can't pay, the lender always gets his money."

    • @tc1817
      @tc1817 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Bullshit. The lender does not ALWAYS get their money.
      People take out loans to start successful businesses. Millions of people buy homes with a mortgage and pay it back easily. If you take oil out of the equation, the countries with the top GDP in the world are all non Muslim. Poverty exists everywhere even in countries with oil. Look at the shitty conditions the foreign workers in the middle east are forced to live in. Islam is not the utopia of your delusion.

    • @muhammadbilalkhan1649
      @muhammadbilalkhan1649 3 ปีที่แล้ว +91

      @@tc1817 Don't look at the Poor. Look at those who hold all the money. Many times you'll hear such news that the 1% hold 90% of the wealth and such (Just an example). That is all just because of this interest.
      And don't listen to me. Just look at what Shakespeare called interest, "a pound of flesh".
      "If you take oil out of the equation, the countries with the top GDP in the world are all non Muslim." Now this is another topic.
      I am not asking to look at countries. I am asking to look within countries. For example, the Student load issue in America. The initial load is sometimes like a 100 K while the students pay up to 300 K back. Is that good? Almost everyone in America is drowning under some sort of local debt. Credit card, student loans, mortgages. And who earns the most, the Lender.
      When talking about religion, only the Jews are allowed to do business with interest and an example of the verse is "It is haram for a jew to lend money on interest to another jew but he can lend it on interest to anyone else" see double standards. In Christianity and Islam interest is forbidden. Why? The condition of the world shows that.
      Now, the lender always get their money back. Say, I loaned some money from a bank and after a year I have paid back the principal and now only the interest (Compounding) is left and for some reason I cannot pay back. So I declare bankruptcy.
      The lender got his money back leaving me in ruins. And that is what happens with most people.
      Like if I take a loan out and give it back immediately I still have to pay like 10 20% more than I took out.
      "People take out loans to start successful businesses. Millions of people buy homes with a mortgage and pay it back easily." What about the unsuccessful ones?
      And ask these same people, what percentage of interest would you prefer 0% or 20%? What would they say? Islam presents a society which helps everyone. If a person needs money to begin a business, give him loan, without interest and no time limit of return i.e. If he is unable to return then forgiving the loan is preferred (no a command). Would a bank forgive a loan? They delay payments but never forgive. Banks of today are financial slavers. But very few people understand this. Banking is an industry rather than just a service.
      I can go on and on.
      And I am not asking you go and accept Islam as your religion. I am just stating that Interest is bad, we as humans should get rid of it.
      However, the commandment for Muslims in Quran is very simple, "If you are not ready to give up on Interest then prepare yourselves for a war with Allah (God) and His Messenger (S.A.W)."
      I hope I have made my argument clear and understandable.

    i'm studying arabic and the qur'an
    many people are wondering why... why is this dude always talking about 1:1 trade?
    there is a specific verse in the qur'an that states the reason why riba is unjust
    الَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ الرِّبَا لَا يَقُومُونَ إِلَّا كَمَا يَقُومُ الَّذِي يَتَخَبَّطُهُ الشَّيْطَانُ مِنَ الْمَسِّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا إِنَّمَا الْبَيْعُ مِثْلُ الرِّبَا ۗ وَأَحَلَّ اللَّهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَا ۚ فَمَن جَاءَهُ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ فَانتَهَىٰ فَلَهُ مَا سَلَفَ وَأَمْرُهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ ۖ وَمَنْ عَادَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ
    pay attention to this part: وَأَحَلَّ اللَّهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَا wa'ahalla allahu albay3a waharrama alrribaa
    meaning: trade is halal while interest is haram
    what does this imply? why is trade halal but interest haram?
    it is very very simple.
    equitable trade is 1:1
    interest is 1:2... inequality and oppression of the poor :(
    the practice of charging any interest is an inequality form of trade which is why it's bad
    i hope this helps :3

    Great explanation! This is only 1 reason why not to get in contact with riba. Riba makes rich people more rich, and poor people will stay poor.
    You forgot to tell the people where the money goes when they take loans, it stays at the bank so they can keep giving loans and earn unlimited amounts of money. (ofc they have "regulations" but they make unlimited money, trust me)

    • @valuebuck4987
      @valuebuck4987 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The prohibition of Riba (interest or usury) in Islam is based on a deep and comprehensive understanding of economic, social, and ethical principles. It is derived from the Quran and the Hadith (sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad) and serves as a fundamental concept in Islamic finance and economic ethics. The wisdom behind the prohibition of Riba is multifaceted and can be elaborated on intensively:
      1. **Economic Justice:** Riba exploits the vulnerable by extracting unjust gains from those in financial need. Islamic teachings emphasize economic justice, ensuring that wealth is distributed equitably and that the economically weaker segments of society are protected.
      2. **Social Welfare:** The prohibition of Riba contributes to social welfare by discouraging economic inequality. Accumulation of wealth through interest-bearing transactions can lead to a concentration of resources in the hands of a few, while impoverishing others. Islam encourages wealth circulation for the benefit of society as a whole.
      3. **Preservation of Human Dignity:** Riba is seen as an affront to human dignity because it can lead to debt bondage and exploitation. In Islam, the dignity and well-being of individuals are paramount, and usury undermines these principles.
      4. **Economic Stability:** The charging of interest can lead to economic instability by encouraging speculative behavior and excessive debt. The Islamic prohibition of Riba promotes responsible and stable economic practices.
      5. **Ethical Considerations:** Islamic finance is rooted in ethical values, and the prohibition of Riba aligns with principles of honesty, fairness, and transparency. Transactions based on mutual benefit and shared risk are encouraged.
      6. **Spiritual Growth:** Avoiding Riba is considered an act of piety and obedience to Allah's command. It reflects the idea that one's economic activities should be in harmony with one's spiritual beliefs, fostering a sense of responsibility and ethical conduct.
      7. **Wealth Creation through Real Economic Activity:** Islamic finance encourages wealth creation through real economic activities, investments, and entrepreneurship rather than through speculative and exploitative financial practices. This approach promotes sustainable economic growth.
      8. **Social Solidarity:** Riba-free finance promotes social solidarity and cooperation. Islamic financial instruments often involve risk-sharing arrangements that encourage cooperation among individuals and businesses.
      9. **Legal Certainty and Fair Contracts:** In Islamic finance, contracts must be clear, fair, and free from ambiguity. This ensures that all parties understand the terms and conditions, fostering trust and reducing the potential for disputes.
      10. **Long-Term Economic Stability:** By discouraging excessive debt and speculation, the prohibition of Riba contributes to long-term economic stability and resilience, reducing the likelihood of financial crises.
      In summary, the prohibition of Riba in Islam is not merely a legal restriction; it embodies a profound ethical and economic philosophy aimed at promoting justice, social welfare, ethical conduct, and economic stability. It reflects a holistic approach to financial and economic matters that seeks to align human activities with moral and spiritual principles.

      Islam was not meant to support a modern civilization.

    • @albak6552
      @albak6552 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Leto2ndAtreides just because the base of the modern banking system is interest, doesn’t mean interest is the ONLY way to have a proper banking system. They way the banking system is right now it can’t stand without interest. But in another model where it doesn’t need interest it can stand on its own still. Chill, and stop saying stuff you have half knowledge about. Muslim countries are not following Islam we know, every people have a high and low time. Today is the high time of the west, but even that we see is declining. You are not the epitome and center of the world, you will have your fall just as you had a rise. Islamic civilization ruled supreme for a thousand years but even that didn’t last. It will come back though. I don’t know why you can’t morally accept interest is not just, and the difference between rich and poor is increasing day by day. Don’t be a slave to the system which doesn’t care about you, and only wants you’re obedience and money. Islam and religion is supposed to free you, our creator wants us free from the shackles of this world, and see the truth lies beyond this limited material life, we should be the masters of the material not the material be our masters.

      @Islam Safari the term 'sharia' comes from the root word 'way'... It refers to the laws derived from the Quran and from the life of Prophet Mohamed through what is referred to as the Hadith. Most of the laws you see today (even Western countries) are actually derived from sharia or from the "maqasid al shariah" at least.... I recommend doing some research on this term "maqasid al shariah" and you will be pleasantly surprised.

      Riba is not interest ; interest is halal but riba is haram
      Here is example : ın turkey inflstion ratio is 65 percent and bank interest ratio is 40 percent
      This means if i gave my friend 10 k dollars debt next year he should gave me 17 k dollars back to me , so if i can buy the same thing that i can buy one year before , if he gave me 10 k back actually he is gaving less money . Not good for me. İts better good for him to go to the bank
      Many eurpean countries like denmark have negative interest …
      So what is riba ; riba is like LOAN SHARK’s ratio. What do loan shark if he gaves you 10k dollars next year he took like 2 times more money. This is haram. İ know a person you go to him he takes your credit card and pass it from pos lets say 10k - than gaves you 5 k dollars. This haram he is loan sharker
      --
      Lets come to Muhammed sAW times ; in thos time they do not have goverment they do not have economics system no rules no banks etc . İf someone gave carpets as dept to someone so other can sale and make profit and gave money back but if he cant pay back the carpets what happens he gaves his wife as a concubine/slave to other enough nooo plus he have to gave house etc …. This is haram this is riba this is loan sharking
      ---
      Some people take dollars/euros or gold as a dept becuse not want to mess with interest. This is even worser . Why ? Lets say my friend changed his 40 gram gold and gave me dept. That time one gram gold was 1050 turkish lira , next year one gram gold become 2400 turkish lira so to pay back 40 gram gold is worser than interest
      ----
      Conclusion if the inflation ratio is higher than bank interest ratio in your country interest is halal
      ----
      My bacholar master anddoctorates degree phd are all on economics , i am religious during my childhoold i went to madrasah
      BUT i know how to use my brain , i use my brain also to eliminate what is mixed as islam but actually 13th century arabic culture

    The concept of Qard al-hasan looks good on papers but if we look around in our society no one gives such loans.

      Yes, of course what do you expect from the society that is already drowned in the Bank loaning business!!!

      Wrong assessment. It's given all the time but the idea itself is not to publicise such deeds. Also in Western world this happens when a relative gives soft loan for business startup.

      @Jimmy Choomuslims should build their own countries. Why flood over the world? It goes to show how a lot of muslims are lacking the ambition to do so. As a god fearing and faithful muslim you are better off living in the mountains or outskirts further away from all this fitnah

      @Jimmy ChooThese kaffir nations are not meant for us as believers. We cannot fit into their criteria but yet we still form alliances with them and suck up to them all the time. We are slowly following their every path.
