    Subbed simply because of how you treat and handle your Kukri. Out west in utah I never travel without my Kukri, either with my truck or on my bike its right there with me.
    The tool is an absolute beast at anything I need it for.
    For anyone looking A good off the shelf option is the cold steel kukri machete. Its light, durable, already has a black finish is fairly tough. Good grip and will simply do work for you for 30 bucks.

    Bluing oxidizes the metal by using Phosphoric acid. After bluing it is good to oil the metal. And overtime the bluing improves. If you don’t oil it will tend to rust and also if you leave the bluing solution on it and don’t remove it. Great video Alan is always fun and interesting! He should have his own channel!

    Two questions:
    1. What’s Alan’s opinion on having different edge angles? Like a finer slicing angle back towards the grip (rear 1/2 to 1/3), and a chopping angle on the belly (second 1/2 to 2/3)?
    2. What about a more traditional oval grip, than round, to help with it not twisting on a non-perpendicular strike?

    Yes, blueing is a special form of rust. Brown patina can be accelerated by urinating on oil free blade. Then oil to keep from pitting.

  • @E.L.RipleyAtNostromo
    @E.L.RipleyAtNostromo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The best finish after using a Khukuri is to give it a scotchbrite satin finish. It removes the strike marks from chopping and holds the oil better as well, so a satin finish will resist rust better than a full polish one. Another fast finish is to use ferric chloride or circuit board etchant cut 10:1. That will also pop the hamon line nicely. Also, heating the blade steel will make the cold blue take better.
    I really like the wrap job with the camo hockey tape. Smooths out the handle and makes it grippier at the same time.

    I enjoyed your video and agree for the most part agree with you, but I think that you are doing it the hard way. I don’t like shiny blades either, so I specify unpolished ordering. As for the grip I request no varnish nor overcoat stating that I’ll oil finish. It’s much easier that way. I have received them with the grip appearing ready for the overcoat to rough, but feeling great in the hand. I like my blades to have a loose fit allowing a one hand draw and then shim to suit. On some of my early ones I’ve wrapped the grip with friction tape, aka hockey tape. You taped over the slots in the scabbard for the two smaller knives. I’ve handled a similar issue by opening the leather wrapping as far down as necessary and removing the pockets those small knives fit into and then closed. This slims things down considerably. And I’m seriously considering ordering without the leather overwrap, an idea that I got from the Nepalese. There are so many variations one can do with a kukri it’s amazing. Below is a link to a video showing my preferred carry method in which you will see, if you care to, a tape wrapped grip and an unpolished wood grip. The blades are unpolished. sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/69210/kukri-carry-method

I had a traditional kukri from KHI a bit over a decade ago but sold it as the chopping was subpar from some of the 52100 / A2 big blades I had. The one I had look MUCH thicker, like your previous example. Thanks in advance!
