Am I wrong or is no one singing melody? I've listened to all 5 parts and I don't hear it. I hear melody notes but they stop and switch to different person. If anyone can tell, it would be you.
Scott doesn’t have a poker face, I love how expressive he is. There are whole compilations of him as “heart eyes Hoying” Mitch sings a high note and he closes his eyes and throws his head back or gives a smile, etc… when Christmas is over I look forward to you reacting to Superfruit which is the duo group of Scott and Mitch, they did silly, fun stuff, they did sit down medleys and they released two EPs together. Avi definitely helped Kevin with his singing, it always makes me so happy when he sings, same with Matt or Avi.
For sure. Any time he performs with friends he just basks in it and look so proud. His and Kevins reactions after Matts solos in recent years have been amazing. Bouncing from joy.
Yeah, Scott has no chill and it’s so adorable. Obviously the countless vids of him with Mitch, but also when Kirstie hits the high note in seasons of love is a really cute moment.
When they are covering a piece they often start very traditionally....but after that...all bets are off. They were on a European tour, and while they were in Germany they decided to sing "Silent Night" in one of the old cathedrals there. They often look at each other during special parts of the music. They are so supportive of each other and love each other. Thank you for your breakdown. I wish I could hear Kevin like you do. He blends with the others so well, it's hard for me to pick up on his voice.
When BYU hosted them for Christmas a few years ago, there is a moment in I Saw 3 Ships where Matt steps forward for his solo. And all 4 are watching him with smiles and pride. ❤
@shirleyfisher8313 that's not true at all. Kevin sings in a ton of their songs that aren't religious. He sings on imagine, Mad world, Run to You, When the partys over, Dreams etc. He's got solos on some songs on their lucky ones all original album and those songs definitely aren't religious. They're all pop songs. Check out A Little Space that ptx do by themselves not the remix with Ateez. Kevin starts the whole song. In fact he's one of the writers.
Sorry my bad!!!. He's joined much more since original started. Even changed wording on sing off From oh my God...to Oh my gosh!! But guess I meant he prefers the Language of some others. Ya got me fairly!!!
It is something I have noticed of Scott over the years of observation, he eye cues appreciation of the other artist whether they are looking at him or not and may not be aware of his visual support
Your analysis and appreciation are both a complete delight! I am so stoked, thank you so much! Though not Christmas songs, I'd really love if you'd check out either their cover of My Heart With You (concert live version please!), or the original it inspired, Run To You. Both are 5 part dense, glorious harmony all the way through. Christmas-wise, Little Drummer Boy gives you a chance to hear multiple combos of two singers together, and is a fantastic refresh of a carol. My favorite Christmas song of theirs ever!
Therese is also Light In The Hallway with five part harmony. There are live version where they all stand around one microfone, the one from Nagoya is one with better sound. It's an original with Avi on the lead. But it is not a christmas song.
Thank you so much! As for these recommendations, the first two are on my list already and Little Drummer Boy...well, that may be on my list for this month, so expect that one at some point (assuming nothing changes, or that copyright doesn't block it!)
@@SirHairless If Light In the Hallway is on your list, you may want to do a live version, where they put down their separate mics and sing into a single mic. My favorite version was done in Lisbon, Portugal. Here's the link to that: th-cam.com/video/uhUhFVCIxgo/w-d-xo.html
Thanks, I like to try and cover everything instead of just the super popular ones. It's the best way to truly understand a group 🎶 Both of these are on my list for this month so watch this space!
@SirHairless I'm subscribed, so I'll be watching for them. BTW, I never liked little drummer joy, but then I heard PTX sing it, and it totally changed my mind. And Mary, did you know, it's beautiful!!
To add to the comment by @celiachristman104 below regarding how they start songs 'traditionally' then suddenly completely make it their own - ie - they don't COVER songs, they "upgrade". I recommend the following xmas songs that demonstrate this perfectly: 1) Hark the hearald angels sing 2) O come all ye faithful 3) 12 days of christmas. LOVING your PTX exploration - subbed for more!
I would love to hear your breakdown of their performance of Carol of the Bells. It is such an intricate and beautiful piece, I just know your analysis would be outstanding.
I'm planning on listening/reacting to this later today actually, and I've scheduled the reaction release for next Saturday! Assuming nothing goes wrong and/or it doesn't get blocked by copyright, expect it then 😀
As someone stated, this was filmed during their first european tour. They found a cathedral and wanted to sing this piece there, with only one mike and the camera. You can see how intently they are listening to (and sometimes watching) each other to keep this in tune and on time. I believe this is a one-take as well, but i don't know how many takes they did before they chose this one to release as a video.
I loved when you used the word "lull" in your reaction, because this arrangement makes this carol a LULLaby. That's why the lyrics are all from the first verse, and Avi's countermelodies (first on "sleep" and then on "silent night, holy night") are so repetitive--they're singing Baby Jesus to sleep. Limited lyrics, no beatboxing--all the "excitement" comes from the constantly changing harmonies. Nothing that would startle a baby , but it sure startles me even now, after dozens--maybe hundreds---of listens. This is Pentatonix at their best.
It's funny you mention this! After I uploaded this I was making dinner and thinking about how I forgot to talk about the LULL in LULLaby aspect! Too much to talk about in such a short space of time that I forget half of what I originally wanted to say 😅 Thanks for the comment
I love the way you analyze videos, and when that analysis is applied to one of my very favorite PTX Christmas songs, it is even more wonderful. Thank you. Adding another vote for "Run to You" (Not Christmas), and throwing in one for "The First Noel".
Thanks for this one! Silent Night is a soothing song, and ptx made it into a lullaby. I believe Avi arranged this one. I will also put a vote in for Run to You, an original by Avi and Kevin, wonderful 5 part harmony. For xmas songs I suggest Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (2nd grammy) , Carol of the Bells, and First Noel. Great breakdown, cheers!
Have really been enjoying your reactions and analysis of Pentatonix songs! My two favorite Christmas songs of theirs are Mary Did You Know and O Come All Ye Faithful. I know you like to listen to the live versions of their songs, but I really recommend the videos for these two. You'll know why when you watch them 😊.
"Mary Did You Know" is a great Pentatonix Christmas song, and I can't wait to hear your analysis of it. I know you'll teach me so much more from it because you explain things so clearly. Thanks for the great reactions. HAPPY HOLIDAYS..🎄🎅
Hello, I’m a massive pentaholic and always on the look out for new reactors to them who truly know what they’re talking about, knowledgable, and can appreciate the greatness that is Pentatonix, and you’ve very quickly become one of my favourites! Subscribed! I rarely leave comments but wanted to show my appreciation for you, And I will really be following your PTX journey, I’m so excited to watch you experience them. Since you’re doing the sing-off content as well, I’d recommend going in order, and as for the rest of it, I can’t even make a single recommendation because you just have to watch their entire catalogue , it’s completely worth it :D . Can’t wait for you to get to some of their classics and their newer stuff, KISS FROM A ROSE being most recent. I look forward to it, and you’re amazing, thank you.
Kevin not only can sing, he has perfect pitch (b/c of course he does). Scott often has crazy difficult background vocals. He’s said his part in Bohemian Rhapsody during the “beeschmeeloch (*sp-lol) will you let him go, let me go…” is one of the most difficult because he’s singing both sides. It’s bonkers when you isolate it out.
Thank you💖💗💖 I appreciate your analysis and love of music. The care in listening and time taken to show what you are hearing are gifts. Thank you for being you!
Love your reactions and can’t wait to see you react to more ptx. If you are wanting a new video they released kiss from a rose which will blow your socks off. Also know you will love the prayer as that one is just heaven
I know you're working on Christmas stuff right now, but just to put it on your radar, you should watch their evolution videos! They've done several throughout the years, and it is a mashup of all the work of a certain artist. They began with Evolution of Music, which covered centuries of music up to now. But in each of them since that one, they've focused on one particular artist. Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Ariana Grande. They're very entertaining, especially seeing how they combine different bodies of work from the same artist. Also, they're all live recordings! So you can see how they do together with live vocals in a more complicated arrangement than one like this.
Thanks for another insightful breakdown of a Pentatonix performance. Can you imagine wandering into this cathedral while they were oh-so-casually singing in the hallway? I’m with you, I love that Kirstie is lounging against the wall like this is no big deal. I will add my vote to O Come All Ye Faithful for a reaction this holiday season. Peace …
Yours are by far my favourite breakdowns of ptx songs. I almost always have to listen several times to be able to hear each part individually. Its fascinating how precise everything is in order to get the full sound ptx is known for and i love watching other music lovers really getting into the nitty gritty of how it all comes together
Thanks for a great reaction to this special song! You are so informative to my untrained ear. Mary Did You Know, The First Noel, O Come All Ye Faithful...loving your Christmas journey!
I love this version of the carol - so glad it was your first PTX Christmas song! I, too, love the way they arranged it, thought it was a smart and respectful arrangement that combined the beauty of the traditional with their own unique sound. I think Scott does appreciate and support his fellow band mates and I saw the same thing you did - always makes my heart happy, and I think seeing those kinds of things humanize the members and are a big part of why Pentaholics are so strongly supportive ❤
I love their songs where they just sit/stand around a mic and do their thing w/out all the editing! They are just so good. ❤ They just received their FIFTH Grammy Award nomination for their 2022 Christmas album! Well deserved! 😊
It is so nice to see your reaction and analysis for this piece. I like your complex insight - when they breathe, when Scott appreciated Kevin's singing and much more. I am always amazed how can you hear and explain who sing which part/notes. I really love that. If you would like to hear another calm PTX carrol, I would recommend you The first Noel. Thank you :)
There are closed captions now! 😭 I feel so seen. Thank you for making your videos more accessible. Pentatonics do such interesting harmonies, and you always point out some of the best parts! It shows a new way of thinking about their composition structure, and I feel like I'm learning a new fact of the day with every watch. Thank you!
There are indeed! They're auto-generated so I hope the technology manages to correctly capture at least some of what I'm saying 😅 Thanks for your support
This is amazing live, meaning in an arena. There is a live stream video from 2022 in TH-cam land if you are interested. It was actually my favorite moment of the night. No mics or monitors, and only one light. Obviously there is a mic to pick it up for the live stream, but no speakers were used.
I was so excited to see that you reacted to this one. They can even make Silent Night into a new song. They were singing in an alcove of a church, and the harmonics seem to have them all in a trance. It was nice to hear you bring out Kevin's part. I have trouble separating it from Mitch's & Scott's in this video. Early on, Kevin and Avi had an apartment together, and would spend time there composing songs and working on their parts. When they started touring, the Trio had one bus and Kevin and Avi had a separate one. Avi had some trouble sleeping on tour, so it helped to have the quiet of just Kevin around. They were very close, and it seems that Kevin and Matt have now created a similar bond.
I was so excited to see this today. This is one of my all-time favorites of theirs or of anyone for that matter, seemingly so simplistic, and yet so them and so beautiful. I watch for your reactions pop into my notifications. I can't express how much I am enjoying seeing the videos that I have seen so many times through you and learning the nuances of what I am hearing in a way that I haven't before. Thank you for starting this journey. The Christmas season should be fun to go through with you. After the season I look forward to your take on 'Run To You' along with everything else that is still to come, including their compilations and other originals. Thank you again for giving me something to look forward to.
lol! I had to laugh when you said “unless they stay very traditional all the way through”… there is not a single cover by Pentatonix where they have stayed true to the original all the way through. They ALWAYS Pentafy the songs they choose to perform. Love your reactions and mostly your analysis! 🎄❤🎄
I appreciate your analysis. You added more value to what I was hearing. You pointed out little things I don’t normally think about. I love this arrangement and I usually absorb the total of the music as I listen and watch but you helped to separate some of the finer parts of the music, the notes and even the nuances in their expressions and interactions. It makes it even more special. Thank you so much.
Really enjoyed your reaction and analysis. Thank you for the entertainment! I can't wait for more PTX Christmas reactions. They have a HUGE catalogue as I am sure you know.
One of my favorite Christmas tunes by PTX! Well, just one of my favorite Christmas tunes in general, really. I don't know how people sing emotional sounding music without choking up. I could never have a singing profession (my voice wouldn't lend itself to it 😉) because I physically can't sing when I feel emotion for a song. In church, there are certain songs that just won't come out, especially hymns or carols, because of the emotion that takes over. I really appreciate lip syncing to this one, so it seems the sound is coming out of me! lol Thank you for your ear and persective!
It's lovely, isn't it?! When singing emotive works, there's something in them that allows the performers to continue performing, despite overwhelming emotions; almost like a duty to perform the music for the viewers/listeners
Oh, yay! We're into the Christmas carols! You can so see Avi's influence in this one. His training in choral composition is obvious here, and it's something that I miss since he left. I love when they bounce around the genres and nail each one. For something very different, I know many will have recommended that you react to O Come All Ye Faithful... and be prepared to be transported to another continent! Seasons greetings from Canada. 💖🍁💖
Thanks! Yes your recommendation has come a number of times before so it's on my list now! Watch this space! Seasons greetings all the way back to Canada 🟥🍁🟥
This was done on location at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, in the north asile toward the back of the church. I am sure they selected this as it created an very personal feel for the carol.
But isn't what Silent Night was supposed to be about? I love how Pentatonix turned it into a lullaby at the end |. " Silent night, Holy night." It's just a beautiful holiday lullaby.
Thank you for your analysis and comments! They’re so knowledgeable and full of attention to details! You’re the first reactor I’ve ever subscribed to (and I watch a lot of them - usually reactions to Pentatonix, or, better to say, Avi-tonix since he’s my favourite:) I’ll watch all of your reactions to PTX with Avi -that’s for sure! You point out something new and interesting for me in every video!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much! So far, I've only reacted to PTX performances with Avi still being part of the group - haven't moved onto Matt, yet. I also heard Avi's solo work for the first time recently, and the reaction to that is also out. Thanks for your support 👍
Love I’m getting a bit mad Hear. Not every HYMN. Needs much doing when it’s a perfect Christmas Hymn. This one too me a Catholic is perfect from PTX. SOME hymns don’t need changing, just a bit hear and there. This to me is spot on perfectly done. 😢😮😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have! I've done two reactions to them so far - feel free to check them out! I plan on releasing my reaction to Home Free's version of O Holy Night soon!

I have also heard you mention Imogen Heap in some of your other reaction but I have not seen you react to PTX's cover of Aha th-cam.com/video/qxY9qkfZMI8/w-d-xo.html and I would enjoy your take.
I am not native speaker with English, but for me it sounds more meditative with repeating the first verse only. Maybe thats why they did it like that (?).
@@pavlamariebernadettax6789 Yes, a lot of people don't actually know the second verse - so I wonder if this was a consideration by them when arranging it

Oh, please the live version of Carol of the Bells! Mitch-slap in an other form! It seems he can sing whitout breathing in the live version.
Your analysis is appreciated, it adds so much to video. Any live video of ptx is great.
🙌
This is amazing live, meaning in an arena. There is a live stream video from 2022 in TH-cam land if you are interested. It was actually my favorite moment of the night. No mics or monitors, and only one light. Obviously there is a mic to pick it up for the live stream, but no speakers were used.
I've almost fallen asleep a couple times while watching this 😂 it's so soothing and I rarely get any sleep.
Thanks for this comment - very good to know!
What a lovely comment - it's made my day! Thank you so much 😄
lol! I had to laugh when you said “unless they stay very traditional all the way through”… there is not a single cover by Pentatonix where they have stayed true to the original all the way through. They ALWAYS Pentafy the songs they choose to perform.
Love your reactions and mostly your analysis! 🎄❤🎄
Haha! You could tell I didn't have much conviction when I said that 😅 Thanks for your ongoing support!
Hadn't seen "Pentafy" before. That's a perfect word for what they do. 😀
Next please...Thank You...written by Scott and his now husband Marc at the end of the pandemic. It's a treasure!
Just found your channel and fell instantly in love with your ptx reactions. Youre so knowledgeable and well spoken, easy subscribe! Keep it up!
Appreciate it! Welcome aboard ☺
I really enjoy your appreciation of their singing. It shows so clearly in your face and eyes. It makes me happy.
☺
I appreciate your analysis. You added more value to what I was hearing. You pointed out little things I don’t normally think about. I love this arrangement and I usually absorb the total of the music as I listen and watch but you helped to separate some of the finer parts of the music, the notes and even the nuances in their expressions and interactions. It makes it even more special. Thank you so much.
The pleasure is mine! Glad you enjoyed 🎄
Thanks Awesome Evaluation as always!
Im being listen to them for six years now.
Really enjoyed your reaction and analysis. Thank you for the entertainment! I can't wait for more PTX Christmas reactions. They have a HUGE catalogue as I am sure you know.
Thank you! Very big, so I can only do so many before Christmas has come and passed. Then, until next year...
This is so overlooked within the PTX videos. It's so wonderful to see it getting the attention it deserves.
👌🎶
Such a good one ❤!!!!
Thank you for helping me hear Kevin
"scott's part is integral to the juiciness here" lol love your commentary!
The only thing you need too know it’s heart ❤️ warming.
Lovely indeed.
Yes, exactly
O Come All Ye Faithful is an absolute must. You won't see it coming!😅
I've reacted to this one already 🎶 th-cam.com/video/SBJiCjlB6jM/w-d-xo.html
Another outstanding reaction and analysis of this wonderful performance. I always learn something new listening to you react.
🙌
Sir, you made my day again. Lovely. Thank you. 🤗
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed ☺
Thank you for your analysis and comments! They’re so knowledgeable and full of attention to details! You’re the first reactor I’ve ever subscribed to (and I watch a lot of them - usually reactions to Pentatonix, or, better to say, Avi-tonix since he’s my favourite:)
I’ll watch all of your reactions to PTX with Avi -that’s for sure!
Yes I’ve watched that one and loved it too! Thank you!:)
Hi, Thank you for the insight. Yours, Ann
Their cover of Sound Of Silence is fabulous. It’s one of the earliest after Matt joined the group.
You need to listen to their Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy and Mary Did You Know...outstanding. Oh and O Come All Ye Faithful.
Plan on reacting to all three of these this month, in time for Christmas!
please check out....Pentatonix - Pure Imagination/Christmas Time Is Here
I'd love for you to react to the newest "o holy night" version of pentatonix 🤯
Love I’m getting a bit mad Hear. Not every HYMN. Needs much doing when it’s a perfect Christmas Hymn. This one too me a Catholic is perfect from PTX. SOME hymns don’t need changing, just a bit hear and there. This to me is spot on perfectly done. 😢😮😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
Beautiful ~ Thanks!
☺
I saw a. Kids choir do this and Avi Kaplan listed as the arranger
I think this was recorded in a cathedral in Germany.
Please check out Mitch's version of "Your Power" his angelic voice at its best, always brings a tear to my eye and the goose bumps go into overdrive
Recommend two brand new songs. First their original of Please Santa Please and their mashup of Pure Imagination/Christmas Time Is Here.
Thanks for these recommendations!
You say tradishanel so far . This hymn doesn’t need anything else. I know there going too put there stamp on it. But this is perfect too me. ❤😢❤😂
Have you heard of the group "Home Free". They are amazing, check out their version of O Holy Night
I have! I've done two reactions to them so far - feel free to check them out! I plan on releasing my reaction to Home Free's version of O Holy Night soon!
Can you do “Mary Did You Know”?
Please listen to ‘Mary did you know’ 👍🇬🇧
I plan to do the reaction to this later this month!
❣❣❣❣❣
🙌
Idk if a turtle neck is the best thing to wear with a bald head 😂 only joking. Great vid man! Love these guys talent and art!
You want my neck AND head to be cold?! 🤣 Haha thanks for watching!
No, thank you!
If you want another PTX Xmas song, try this medley they performed live for Season 5 of the Sing Off (2 years after they won Season 3). th-cam.com/video/ya0Iu_ySzXk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Nyx5cGpJEsHfaX53
This. 👍
Thanks for this! Its concept has caught my eye....watch this space
Great reactions, I love the analysis you provide. You truly add to the experience. You should check out Coldest Winter th-cam.com/video/7oxSjw83u5E/w-d-xo.html for one of their more unusual ones. I have also heard you mention Imogen Heap in some of your other reaction but I have not seen you react to PTX's cover of Aha th-cam.com/video/qxY9qkfZMI8/w-d-xo.html and I would enjoy your take.
My only complaint is that they repeated the first verse instead of singing the second.
