I’m old and have been loving the dragons, but they are bouncy. I tried the dual duros and hated them, I was thinking about trying the Spite Fires, but I guess the X97s will be my next set of wheels.

Great review! I completely agree with you. Was skating the X99s V5 and have 2 sessions on the spit 93a classics. Feel identical to me. I did not like the x97s. They stuck too often. I just got the soft sliders 2 days ago, they feel really good 2nd day of skating them today. I slide really long on ledges, I notice whenever i am doing noseslides or tailslides i need to wax them ledges on the side and on top of the ledge which is a bit annoying but tolerable especially coming from a 99a spitfire classic wheel. The speed is fucking incredible and smooth on them though it feels like i don't have to push for shit to approach a ledge which is amazing. After doing tons of research and watching a bunch of comparison videos of bones vs spitfires it looks like i am only sticking with the soft sliders and i definitely want to try out the bones x99's. Does the X99 slide better for noseslides or tailslides compare to soft sliders? or are they the same?

actually i have 2 setups going right now with dragons and spitfire 97a, so i might have to swap both out for sliders & bones so i can see which of those 2 i like. wheel madness is like the last bit of madness i haven't sorted out. i dunno, i may actually prefer the 97a classics over the dragons despite not being as comfy, but that also might just be because i'm a bit burnt out on dragons after riding them for a few sets in a row. it would be nice if i had strong feelings for either the sliders or x97 after trying them out to help me make a decision what wheels to ride for good.

i live in downtown toronto and im riding the spitfire 80hd chargers, the ground is pretty rough so i need something kinda soft. Problem is when I go to do tricks the pop or scoop feels a bit off, i kind of have to pop my treflips you know? I have a completely different set up just to go to the park with and do tricks though. Would you recommend switching out the softer wheels for these in a gritty city like toronto or do i just stick to my 2 different setups do you think? It's kinda annoying cause I can't bs 180 revert cleanly or do bs 180's with a nice revert at the end with the 80s, but i can ollie up curbs and ride on the streets so it gets the job done - i'd like to do tricks though

I found that the colored 99as feel slightly harder than the naturals, but the colored 97as feel a LOT softer than the naturals. @@diplenski Sorry in advance to geek out. A durometer gauge will only measure indentation hardness but there's also rebound hardness which is a set of test conditions. I heard that it was the rebound formulation that George Powell really focused his R&D on with the Dragons/ X Formula because a faster rebound is typically associated with harder material/ slower rebound with softer material (fast rebound = faster rolling speed). With some engineering wizardry, GP managed to develop a soft durometer / high rebound formula. I might be completely wrong here but this could be why the Spitfires and Dragons feel so different. All I can say is that my 93a Dragons are way faster than my previous regular 99a wheels which blows my mind 🤯

Steve I really appreciate your honesty, especially compare to other YT skaters who also review these popular skate products and we know they have a Spitfire bias when it comes to skate wheel brand. You said these SFF4 93A is more similar to the X99 than the X97 due to the feel of the hardness, so when it comes to speed are the SFF4 93A closer to the X99 or X97? Also when you said you give the edge to the X97 when you compare the X97 to the SFF4 93A do you mean that you pefer the X97 because they are slightly softer feel and thus a bit more comfy on rough surfaces while still as good and about the same when it comes to speed, slide and overall usability for all types of skating (street/park/tech/flip/ledge/rail)?

@@stickersteve007never brought the X97 but according to your info and reviews I would also choose X97 over SFF4 93A for the same reasons if the speed and slide are the same, I don't care about the sound of the wheel as much as most other skaters but more so the performance and comfortability of the wheel especially on rough which is really the main use of these type of softer wheel + the ability to still slide. I mainly ride SFF4 99A for smooth park and Dragons for anything rough and not smooth so I have zero bias for wheel brand and prefer what skate wheels work best for what surfaces. If these type of wheels were available back in the 80s and 90s where there were no or much lesser skate parks available, I'm sure the X97 would probably be the highest selling wheel due to the fact it can be use well on the street and smoother surfaces, why Spitfire had to come out with a similar wheel such as these SFF3 93A to compete for the market. Thank you for your reviews and please keep them coming and keep us informed in the future and thanks again for being honest with your reviews 🎉🎉🎉🎉

One thing I've been thinking about is that Spitfire advertises it as a "93D" Not 93a. D Isn't a unit that measures durometer. Similar to "X97". I'm pretty sure they use their own system for hardness. I believe they wanted to be able to claim 93 to compete with dragons but they knew that it doesn't really measure that way when you test it. I think 93D is just to give the buyer an idea of what they were going for and what to expect but not a real reflection of the urethane itself. Kind of weird but I do enjoy the wheels. I've always been a hard wheel guy, but I since getting the Dragons I started skating a couple crusty spots that are now my favorite places. Hopefully the Spits will be kind on my joints too. Formula 4s had been my favorite wheel since they came out, so I'm pretty excited to try them.

The Soft Sliders sounded like it had a hard pop. They should’ve just advertised it as a whole new formula like the “R” formula or R Duro

i agree. they still could have advertised them as a softer wheel that slides

Spitfire has never been my wheel. I tried the Tablets and they didn't work for me. I skated them for a long time. I do have a set of 58mm formula 4 that are great on one of my bowl boards.
I liked the Dragons but X97 and X99 are great. All that being said, I have spent most of the year on a set of 84B Bones. I like the hardness when doing nose slides because they don't stick in ledges at all. (I am in the park and not the street)
Maybe I will try these. I have a fun board to setup they would probably be good for.
Honestly, I think because I skated in the 80s I am conditioned to be a Bones guy. While 90s skaters seem to be more Spitfire. So maybe it is a Culture thing.

Kewl, kewl! I look forward to eventually trying the X97s.
But apart from the fact that I have several 99A Spits and a set of 99A Bones STFs that I want to ride because I spent money on them I feel like the Soft Sliders are my new go to wheel and that I am done riding 99A or more wheels outside of smooth parks at least😊. I just really like the Sliders being hard feeling but still somehow not. The Dragons to me are still a great wheel though but has a more rubbery cruisery feel. The Dragons I could see myself stick on my cruiser/work transport deck in a big size and feel good on the rough streets over longer distances and with speed. Currently I have 60mm 80A Bones Filmers wheels on there.

    X formula rules 🔥
I tried dragons and they’re way to much softer. (Horrible sound and bouncing too much)
Since I turned to X formula 97 I really kept only the great feeling of skateboarding any surfaces with no crap sound and no pain on legs after 3 or 4 hours sesh. Definitely the best wheels for my 48 years old legs

@@stickersteve007 it’s all the marketing and the It’s obvious that Powell tries to support skaters early into there career as opposed to grabbing up all the hot names in skating constantly.
They are the only brand with in house every thing and all USA made. With American workers providing Americans jobs in skateboarding manufacturing which is so cool.
They should re brand and focus on that.
Everyone else is in China, or at minimum BBS and PS STIX are in Mexico right over the border but they are not doing what Powell is doing when it comes to product development and research and designing.

@@stickersteve007 agreed. 👍 bones has had a lot better brand imagine in the market for a long time. They on the other hand seem to get the marketing right, and support so many skaters from all over the world. One of the things that’s hard for smaller niche brands to do, because of shipping costs, Japan and South America and Australia are some of the hardest country’s to sponsor people in, and Powell /Bones does a good job of that, at a loss for the company, financially.
