    A bit ironic that a lock company that suffered such a PR hit turned out to have one of the more difficult locks on this channel

      PR doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the locks. good companies can have crippling PR disasters that end them, while bad companies can keep going forever as long as they can convince people their products are good.

      Back before ASSA got hold of them and their locks were still affordable I had a Mul-T-Lock cylinder on my front door. I can't afford them now.
      The general public don't know about locks at all and if they buy a padlock in any of the big DIY stores they will find a choice of Master lock or Chinese pot metal crap.

    I thought having warding on your lock was covered in lock-design 101, right after shielding and over-lifting.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think the issue here is linear thinking. The reason you have warding on your lock is to make picking harder, by making it physically difficult to get the pick into the right place. I suspect the designers thought that the pin-in-pin design already made picking hard enough, so they didn't need warding. (You need special tools and, if LPL takes a minute and a half to pick a lock, an average lock picker will need half an hour minimum.) Since "the" reason for warding wasn't applicable, they probably didn't consider side-benefits of warding. And, since warding has a definite cost (harder to machine the cylinder and the keys), there's commercial pressure to avoid it if possible.

    • @xoncention3265
      @xoncention3265 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Could someone explain "nice click" and "false set"? I always imagine that with a "false set" you would have to start over, but I never tried picking a lock myself.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      A "nice click" is when a pin is pushed fully clear of the shear line, allowing the tensioner to rotate the cylinder until the next pin binds. A false set is when a security pin such as a spool is pushed into a position where a narrow part of the pin is across the shear line. This allows the cylinder to turn a little, but not as far as it would if the pin was fully clear of the shear line. If you don't know what I mean by "shear line", search for a video of somebody picking a transparent lock to show how single-pin picking works. (It's so much easier to see it graphically than for somebody to try to explain it in words.)

    • @StanislavG.

      I just got me self a nice cheap lock picking set from Ali ($20 or so) and several Yale pad locks (the good ones, with security pins and all) and went on picking. Took me about 30 minutes to pick the first time, now i can pick open pretty much any Yale and old Mul-t-lock (the new ones are a bit too much for me at this stage) in under 5 minutes. It's pretty intuitive once you start doing it, you can actually feel the individual pins and their nature, the counter rotation, the false set, the clicks.
      Just get a set man, you'll like it, i promise :)

    I'd very much like you to look deeper into that "foil impressioning" attack because to me it smells a bit like bullshit. I dunno, maybe you could explain the theory a bit more.

    • @MichaelBransonCoach
      @MichaelBransonCoach 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same concept as the tubular lock 'bic pen lid' impressioning attack. Cut the tip of a pen lid at the point where it tapers out enough to fit in the lockway. Mash and twist the lid until the plastic is deformed and the keyway turns. For the dimple locks, you need a key drilled to max depth. Wrap it in a stiff foil then slide in, wiggle and turn. The foil depresses as you wiggle and the spring fights back. The turning gets the pin bound open under tension. A bit of practice can get the lock open. The inner pins are all the same length so when you press them hard they deform the tool at the maximum depth, exposing the cut depth. Back off a little on the pressure and your 'key' is aligned.
