I'm watching these old highlights, and I catch myself noticing how far Novak has come and I can tell it was because of matches like this one and other brutal battles vs Rafa. Roger in total god mode here. 2009 was the last genuinely dominant year for him in the slams with maybe 2017 a contender.
Someone hit the nail on the head below when they said that the slowing down of the courts from 2008 onwards was one of the key reasons why Novak and Nadal started beating Roger on a regular basis and hence why he lost his invisibility.

@@apathak34 aside from the year end tournament, where the court is still fast. that's why nadal has never won it and unless the field gets decimated by injuries, he never will. federer always had his number even when nadal beat him throughout the year and it was never a close battle.
head to head is quite respectable now, clay is always in nadal's favour, but since 2017 nadal barely won a set outside clay and was blown away most of the time. also, fed is the only player to bagel nadal 3 times.
it's a pity for fed how 2009 uso turned out. he was by far the best player for a full year and deserved the calendar slam. delpo snatched that uso (and good for him), and nadal snatched the auso, but federer's level was absurd. only his self doubt cost him those 2 slams.

From the day Roger changed his racket, his game has also changed completely. You can see that from how loosely he still holds the racket here - that was something completely different from 2011. And let's be honest, from 2011 he reached exactly 3 grand slam and 17 before he changed his racket. So if that's not an indication, then I don't know!
In his prime, he was certainly the best player who ever had a tennis racket in his hand, but you have to be honest, this magical thing he had had disappeared from 2011

    • @MMAGURU_Abhishek

Brother ... your whole hypothesis is inaccurate ... Federer changed his Racket to -97-98' frame from 2014 season after trying the same on clay in Gstaad in 2013 ....
he won 4 grand slams after 2011 and reached 08 grand slam finals unlike you mentioned that he reached 03 GS ...
Yes after changing racket his fluid whip motion on forehand and the sweet spot of forehand went down leading up to slowing the forehand side but that was a trade off with bringing more balls into play and driving the backhand instead of chipping it
      Get your facts right

So hard to compare the Big Three and say who is greatest. The 5 year age difference between Roger and Rafa, and the 7 year age difference from Roger to Novak def had an affect an the outcomes of some of their matches once Roger got into his 30's and Rafa and Novak were still in their 20's. But unfair to Rafa and Novak to say the outcome would have been different with a smaller age gap...no one knows.. To me Roger is the standard...he showed Rafa and Novak what if would take to be a GOAT; the dedication, training, support team, logistics, scheduling and being a fierce competitor...Roger is the map to all that. Rafa became the protagonist and Novak the antagonist. Together they ve made the greatest era of tennis that will ever be.

Novak is the better player but no one comes even close to Roger's elegance and grace. Watching him play when he's on feels like you're watching tennis the way it was intended to be played. Not sure if there's ever been a more aesthetically pleasing player in any sport. So glad I got to watch his prime.

It seems likely that Novak will wind up with the most slam titles at this point, and IMHO seems like the most complete player tennis has seen. Roger strikes me as the most elegant player; there was an effortless quality to his peak-level execution. The toughest fighter was and is Rafa. As a notorious gunslinger once said, "They forgot to put the quit in this villain." Of course ultimately, the winner has been us the fans. Thanks guys, it has been a privilege watching your play over the years:) (My fav match was '09 Wim Fed - Rod. I've never pulled harder for a guy to win; Andy played a hell of a match against Roger!)

I disagree. If anyone is a complete player - it's Roger Federer. Novak is great, no doubt, but he's a baseline hitter and a defensive player. Roger is more skilled than Novak. The numbers won't change that.

@@antoniomarine1567 Well said. I'm not the biggest fan of Djokovic but I do think he will be the most complete player. You can make a case for GOAT for any of these three players - GOAT will never equal most championships for me. Tennis was the most fun to watch with Federer and Nadal imo.. Alcaraz now climbing into the conversation, if he can get his leg cramps under control

    • @antoniomarine1567

@@alexandergoldman I don't think Novak is the most "complete" player - because there are facets of Roger's game that are superior to Novak's. I will say Novak will go down as the WINNINGEST player in history. And I agree with you - you could make the argument for all the big three. Aren't we luck to have lived in these times! Also agree - Roger vs. Rafa is as good as it gets. Though I did get a glimmer of hope the first time I saw Alcaraz play Sinner! Alcaraz has the fight of Nadal with the hands of Roger - he's going to be fun to watch!

I remember how devastatingly confident Federer was after his Wimbledon 2009 title surpassing Sampras' 14 majors. In the Montreal masters 1000 right after Wimbledon, he was a bit shaky getting used to the shift from grass to hard court, but here in Cincinnati, just a week after his loss to Tsonga in Montreal, he was a monster. He had been always struggling with his form against Murray at non-slam events ever since the start of 2008, but he showed he could beat anyone if and when he's at his absolute best with unshakable confidence.

Federer forgets his signarure shot is the forehand. When he developed his backhand it was favorable for any opponent he faced in any stage of the tournament. That is why Novak cannot beat Roger when he was still utilizing his forehand. Many opponents can attest to that. When the press requested a change on his game he quickly obliged to that request. That is how sporty Fed is He never wants to dominate his opponents on the first place he also wants them to up their game.If any player on the Fab 5 will have the same opportunity as Fed had I think they rather stick to their bread and butter so as not to let their opponents have a winning opportunity like Fed did. That is by far the best compliment you can give to any opponent to see Him Imprive and beat you in any occassion.Cause beating them on the regular basis will not make the match interesting cause its just like watching a movie you already watched even if its a good one once you know the ending its not so interesting to watch. This is why Novaks game cannot come close to Rogers cause he rely on opponents weakness rather utilize his game to make an advantage.A blitz game or hasty one will always favor the player who utilize it rather than using a counter play always it defeats the players Individual excellence. An dalways greatly affects the opponwnt in front of you.

It always seems like that when Roger is in full flow. 'Cause full flow Roger won't require from you to make sprint along the baseline. That's one of the reasons why Nole-Rafa rivalry feels like so intense. It doesn't take anything away from Nole-Roger rivalry. As a tennis fan, I thoroughly enjoyed Nole-Fed matches even more so than Rafa-Fed matches. It's like fire and ice.

Roger had a very spoiled up bringing and armchair tennis players oogling over the marketing job.. it reflected in his play agaisnt Nadal/djoki he only won 33% of their GS matches over his career and was only 4 of 14 in GS finals agaisnt them. Fedsqaush game was very weak mentally along with his weak backhand where he lossed to djoki 3 times in a row at Wimbledon finals on his supposed best surface and with the crowds on his side too...Couldn't even beat Nadal once at French..Fed's game never evolved same old sqaush style that he got the goldilocks era 2003-2009 where he won 15 slams in a very Low level Era.. The only true ambassador and statesman to the game of tennis is Djoki who post match speeches are very articulated as with Fedsqaush it is very empty/simple as he bumbles through but he did Sell lots of running shoes and watches

Federer 2006 was not able to deal with non peaked Nadal... Pathetic. Federer was still peaked in 2011... 2012 .... 2013.... Peak Djokovic would expose every version of Federer's BH. Specially not mentally stable Federer from his so called peak times. If Federer's prime and peak was so short .... Then Federer is pathetic. But we all know that Federer's peak is much longer .... Its just Djokovic made him look average. If Djokovic would start his free glutein diet earlier than in 2011.... Djokovic would have now already 28 GS minimum.
