For those below that are saying that the steam canner is not approved , YES ! Recently the University of Wisconsin extension system conducted research that determined steam canners are safe for use on specific high acid recipes. Use your steam canner to process food no longer than 45 min.
Bought three at Farm and Fleet three years ago when the blue canner sprung a leak.. Gave two as gifts and made believers of all of us. You can plant flowers in the water bath. I love using this thing when I can. Honestly amazed you haven't done this before now.
I just bought a steam canner from amazon in the US. It came today!!! So excited. My friends are looking at me like I am crazy with all these canning supplies! Here in The Netherlands not many people perserve food, except the freezer. Thank you so much for this video, came the right time for me!
I love the steam canner!! I used it with my tomatoes and pickles...so nice.....instead of lugging gallons of water for the water bath canner..this uses only 2.5 quarts!! wow!! Then, since I had so many jars to process...I could use them both at the same time!! Priceless!!
I bought that exact steam canner two years ago and absolutely love it. I no longer water bath anything. Tomatoes, jams pickles, etc. It all cans beautifully!
inflation is a fact of life .. all canning supplies have been more expensive since all the sudden a large percentage of people got shocked by the shut downs.. as if many of us haven't been pinching every cent for years..before.. With the cost of energy (also some areas cost of water) a more efficient method is good..
For high acid foods only not low acid foods... slip of the tongue. Some may not know that however. I love mine... the water needed for the water bath canner was just too heavy after I broke both my wrists three years ago. Looking forward to this series and what you do with it!💜
I used mine for the first time this week. Made Melenzana Ali Olio (pickled eggplant in olive oil) and now working through 50 pounds of tomatoes. Making salsa.
Ordered mine a week ago through your Amazon link. It arrived 2 days earlier that it said. I'm so excited. I believe they have upped to temp to 45 minutes. As soon as I get the updated info I will let you know. This was told to me by our Idaho Extension office.
I bought the steam canner after seeing so many praises about it. Really, I was expecting my review to be, eh... its okay but no big deal. Well, I was wrong. First let me thank you for telling us about it. Things that sold me on using this and pretty much retiring my water bath canner (WBC) was this: 1. This doesn't raise the temperature in my kitchen like the WBC. 2. I can quickly get the jars in/out and maintain the correct temperature for my zone. 3. I can get more canning sessions done in less time than WBC, primarily due to #2 above. 4. Uses MUCH less water. I'm sure there may be more benefits than I listed here but this is what I noticed today doing my first steam canning. Yay! And thank you Leisa!
Got mine less than an hour ago. Today my brother messaged me that he has a lot of figs from his tree for me. Figs preserves will be first followed by peaches and tomatoes. My homegrown Navajo blackberries have just finished producing and are in the freezer. This year is looking a lot more tasty.
I’m trying to use my canned foods more (great at putting on shelf but not using). This morning I made two pans of chicken manicotti with canned chicken- used up 2 1/2 pint jars chicken. One pan for dinner tonight- one in the freezer for use in a few weeks. Love my home canned chicken on the shelf 😊
I purchased a steam canner 3-4 years ago at a thrift store. I had never heard of such a thing. I was intrigued, but weary of it at first. I used it only for jam. My thinking was that if my mother could make us jam by simply turning the hot jars upside down (and none of us died from it, it will be safe to make jams & jellies with the steam canner. Then I did some research, talked to others who have been steam canning and now use it for any water bath recipe. Its such a time saver! mine has no gauge.
I was making pickles the other day and couldn’t find my steam canner (I recently moved) so thank goodness for amazon. Received I my new one the next day. The steam canner changed my life. I absolutely love it, now I have two.
So glad I found you. I’m just waiting for my steam canner to arrive. I can now can the quart jars that I couldn’t before cos I can’t find a deep enough pan ❤️
SOLD!! I'll be steam canning some jams and jellies this weekend to give to my Dad for Father's Day. Love that this uses less water and less energy. Doesn't make the house hot like the water bath canner does. I'm excited to see your upcoming videos featuring the steam canner. Many thanks!!
Acc9rding to the book, when the canner starts steaming on the side and bubbling, etc. starts, you have the temp too high. Start reducing heat slowly until it stops.
Thank you! Got a canner for my birthday last year and I'm ready to dive in. There's much more that I need to know but you've given me a great introduction!
Today is September 5, 2022. Pinball got one of these for his birthday and he mentioned you. Now I have a steam canner just like this and I found out about it from your channel. But just for grins and giggles after he mentioned it, I decided to go back to your channel to look at the original video where you thought about steam canner which is this one and I discovered that I had been unsubscribed from your channel. You are now the third channel that I subscribe to that I found out that I was an subscribed to. First was patriot nurse, second was three rivers homestead.
I just used my steam canner to can up my elderberry juice. So easy! And i have a hard time standing and carrying heavy things, so this is a real game changer. Next up: crushed tomatoes from my garden and marinara sauce.
It took me forever to get the indicator knob on. I gave up and came back in the morning and got in on on just a few minutes. I’m so excited to use it. I have a weight restriction and this will help so much.
This is the best demonstration. I just received mine today and got so frustrated trying to put the gauge on the lid that I had to walk away. Now I am going to try again. Did you put the 4 jars with water in the canner to check that everything was ok. That is what my instructions say.
Just saw your video! My Mother-in-law and Father-in-law, bless their souls, had a Wherever salesman come around selling his pots and pans, about 75-80 years ago, and it's in my care now. It has a steamer pot that can also be used as a large potato pot or small roast. My MIL told me she used to can with it, but I couldn't figure out how. There's no booklet or gauge, or a place for it. I may have to can something easy to see if it works. The whole Wherever set is all heavy, nothing flimsy about it. Thank you for your video. I've learned something again!!
That looked a little scary when it started rocking. Lol. Now I will be getting one of them. Thanks for sharing. I learn so much from you. God bless you and your family. Thank you so much.
Mine was rockin and Rollin and steaming out the sides and I turned my stove down and it still maintained the same amount of steam it just didn’t rock ‘n’ roll. It stayed in the green zone
Somehow I came across your videos. Thank you so much for the help in learning some canning lesson. Kind of new to canning. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hi Lisa. It's me again. 😁I have a glass top stove. Can I use this steam canner on it? Also, would I be looking at the Ball Home Preserving book for recipes/instructions on what I can can and the times? I understand that I can't can anything longer than 40-45 depending on my stove. Thank you.
Ok your various attempts at putting it together were hilarious! 😂 I knew immediately when seeing the parts what was going to happen. BTDT. I always think I can do it without a screwdriver, too. Never can. ❤️

Didn't also approve that we didn't have to sterilize jars as long as we steamed the appropriate time recipe?
@@Mygraciously if waterbath(steamcanning also)canning 10mins or over no need to sterilize.
Ok you said something about not canning on your stove. Why?
Ah, another adventure into the realm of self sufficient living. Let's go into this all together, Yes! Thanks Leisha. You rock, woman,
Bought three at Farm and Fleet three years ago when the blue canner sprung a leak.. Gave two as gifts and made believers of all of us. You can plant flowers in the water bath. I love using this thing when I can. Honestly amazed you haven't done this before now.

Hope you enjoy it!
I love having my steam canner. I don’t really use it that often, but I love how lite it is.
I went to one of those Amazon repackage stores last week with my family and found this exact steam canner for $8. So excited to use it!!
Help Sheila, how and where can I find that!?
Happy you are now steam canning. I have been for years and it is such a pleasure vs wb. Happy canning!
Can you share the items you made?
I love the steam canner!! I used it with my tomatoes and pickles...so nice.....instead of lugging gallons of water for the water bath canner..this uses only 2.5 quarts!! wow!! Then, since I had so many jars to process...I could use them both at the same time!! Priceless!!
I bought that exact steam canner two years ago and absolutely love it. I no longer water bath anything. Tomatoes, jams pickles, etc. It all cans beautifully!
I just got this canner from Amazon…and it’s now $65. No longer under $50. Inflation…thanks, stupid government.👌🙄
Just ordered one on Amazon for $62. I waited too long because a month ago there was a couple of brands with one a bit cheaper.

I have a steam canner and love it.
Thanks for the help. A friend gave me a steam canner but no manual. Now I know how to do it!
I can't wait for all the steam canning videos!

I received a steam canner for Christmas. I’ve used it several times and I love it. Easy to use, easy to clean, and not a lot of water.
Thank you, thank you for this video! I knew I wanted a steam canner but now seeing how easy the assembly and process is, it is a for-sure thing.
I used mine for the first time this week. Made Melenzana Ali Olio (pickled eggplant in olive oil) and now working through 50 pounds of tomatoes. Making salsa.
Sounds great! Do you know where you found the recipe?
I have a steam canner still have not used it Thank you Leisa for doing this series!
You're going to love it!
So glad to watch this! Just got mine, very helpful.

I have used a steam canner for 20 years. I found it at fleet farm in Wisconsin. I got it because we didn't have ac. I love mine
Can you list the things you made in steam canner since all that experience?
Thank you. Someone like you should create a book on steam canning.

I bought one several months ago and I have not taken out the box yet but looking forward to starting to steam bath... water bath was a mother to me 🙃
I was going to just not steam can. But you sold me on saving water and energy.
Wonderful Leisa thank you so very much!
It saves your back and wrists too! I need to order one.
I am so excited to see this. I bought one of these about 3 yrs ago and wasn’t sure about how to use it or if it was safe to use it.

Yes, you need to reduce your heat to where the lid doesn't rock, steam comes only from the vent, but it stays in the green zone.
Cool, I'll be checking into it
Thank you for the tutorial
The steam canner is in my wish list, although it's double the price in the UK. Thank you fir sharing thos wonderful tool.😊

Looks awesome :D I get my steam canner delivered sometime soon, and while I will read the manual, it's also nice to watch a video about it too. My only wish is that the bottom was stainless steel instead of aluminum so that it could be used on an induction cooktop. Thankfully I don't have an induction stovetop right now, but I like things to be future proof.
Hmm so steam canners have been around since the 1920's but were only approved in 2015. If it takes them nearly 100 years to test things, I think we'll have a loooong wait for testing of any new technologies or methods.
And that’s exactly why “rebel canners” exist. They’ve tested recipes over the last many, many decades & they’ll continue to use deductive reasoning, intelligence & experience to push the canning envelope. Even Suttons Daze rebel cans corned beef, which doesn’t have an approved method & isn’t recommended. I do, too. I can several recipes/items that aren’t “approved” solely because they’ve not been tested.
I love your stove !!!!
I think I will continue using my pressure canner since I don't have to have the gauge checked. I switched mine to weighted as they only test here on one day and if you miss it too bad. Weights are always correct. It also will hold 16 pints. I hear that these are warping on the bottom also.
Pressure canners are not used the same as steam canners
I will as well. Amount of water used is near exact, and like you, I have the double. I don't see this as saving money or time. Is neat to look at though.
Steam canning isn't appropriate for ALL foods, only for foods that you can water bath. As for the warping, that's only if it's misused. You can't let it run dry.
When I took a course MSU I was told not to start the timing of the product until the gauge was in the maximum of my zone. The maximum in my zone because I'm at 900 feet is a quarter inch past the starting line green zone. We were told to mark that starting point with a sharpie. I love my steamer I will never go back to water bath for canning. Love what you do and look forward to each session
I agree. I have the same brand steamer and what you said is what the paperwork says.
