Biochar with urban waste (wood)

Biochar is also called black gold. This is used as a fixing agent for soils and purifying water. This has unique characters and is superior to normal charcoal. Wood is burnt in "low oxygen" conditions, to produce biochar. There are several methods for making biochar. In this video, I made biochar in the pit method. I used waste wood from construction sites in Hyderabad city. I dug a pit and slowly burnt these wood pieces, layer by layer, in low oxygen conditions (With support from Praveen). While wood in the top layer gets oxygen, the wood pieces just below get heated up with limited oxygen. When the wood pieces on the top layer get into the ash stage, new wood pieces are added to prevent total burnout and ash formation. This process is simple but requires close supervision. The fire should be quenched with lots of water when the last layer is about to get into the "ashing" stage. It took about four hours, to make this biochar. This biochar is useful for urban gardeners, for improving their soil conditions - humus and beneficial bacteria in the soils. Making biochar with wasted wood in urban habitations has double benefits - purposeful use of wasted resources and also improving soils in urban gardens. There are numerous other benefits too.
