  • Pianist Henrik Kilhamn presents Schubert's 2nd Impromptu from the first set, Op. 90. If the playful, seemingly never-ending scales are a gentle stream in a sunny nature scene, the raw and rough chords in the middle section is a heavy storm brewing.

    God Schubert was just brilliant....imagine if he'd only lived another 5 years or so, what many more masterpieces he would've put out.

    It meanders so much that I find it difficult to shape the melody, but maybe that is the point. It seems like it can be played differently each time and be as valid in every interpretation.

    You have such a delicate light touch with these scales, I've been playing for 2 years now, and i hope my scales will get so butter smooth as yours haha. Would you recommend flat fingers for the black keys?

    • @SonataSecrets
      @SonataSecrets  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank haha. Well I think flatter fingers on black keys but not completely flat, it's good to have the a little control of the finger tip joint.

  • @maitlandmottmorency

    Thank you for this terrific breakdown. I've struggled with this piece on and off for years. Any tips for getting the airy touch to the right hand triplets in the A sections? I can't get past a mechanical sound with some notes always sticking out. I am not striving for speed. Sokolov's graceful tempo would be plenty for me so long as I could be smoother. Slow practice only goes so far.

    Right now I am learning this piece and am progressing really well. This video was really helpful however does anyone know is the pedal is needed and necessary for this piece?

    • @SonataSecrets
      @SonataSecrets  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the scales part doesn't need much pedal, all notes should be held in LH se they're not relient on pedal. And then I use it more pedal in the middle part.

    Are you using pedals to confiscate the ovelapping notes (in particular b-minor note in the beggining)?

    I find that Schubert is unique from his composer peers. Not as much dynamic drama as Beethoven, not as much melodic virtuosity as Chopin, the grace and melody interactions of Mozart.
