    Hey guys,
    The long riders guild is quite a thing. Back in 1926 a guy named Aimé Felix Tchiffely left from Buenos Aires Argentina with two 15 YO criollos - Mancha & Gato, given to him by a Veterinarian named Emilio Solanet. His plans was to reach the US horse back on his own. When he left everybody was mocking him - loco guys who’s gonna end up dead in the bush😅
    3 years later he reached Washington DC with Mancha - he had to leave Gato behind in Mexico. At that time he had become a legend in Argentina. The people realized how good were criollos horses compared to “importados” warm blood from UK.
    Tchifely wrote a book on his trip - “the long ride” it’s worth the money and time to read it.
    Emilio Solanet became very famous and with him Mancha & Gato.
    This is how the guild is born. It gathers many long trail riders and adventurers.
    Many riders took the road on horse back after Tchiffely.
    Some French guy - Emile Brager and Marie Roesle started there trail from Argentinan Patagonia and went up to Alaska in 4 years during the 80’s.
    Thanks for your video !!

    As far as your answer goes on the quality of bosals, I agree up to the point of the string width. I don't think a finer string necessarily makes a better string. What is important though is the ratio of the string. With that I mean the ratio of the width of the string as opposed to the thickness of the string. That ratio should be for a bosal 1:2 to 1:2.5, e.g. 1/8" wide and 1/16" thick, or 5/32 wide and 1/16" thick. That ratio, combined with a good, constant and consistent bevel will avoid strings curling up and turning your bosal into a shoeing rasp.
    Another important factor is the hide itself. In my opinion, the only rawhide that should be used in a good functioning bosal are cow, horse or kangaroo. Especially the cheaper bosals are a lot of times made from goat (easier and more abundantly available in Asia and the Andes) with a ratio from 1:5 and worse, which will guarantee a shoeing rasp in time. What I'm trying to say is that a 3/16" wide string is not necessarily a bad thing if it's from a good, with a good bevel and a good ratio.
    As far as the palm concho goes, Gerardo Gonzalez made me 2 that were constructed of 2 old silver teaspoons brazed together and scratched on them. They are eggshaped so to speak, and fit in my hand palm better than a round one, but I guess that's all personal preference.
    Allthough you've covered a lot of it over the years, maybe some more videos on your insights on low stress cattle work , like where and how to position your horse when working cattle in different situations and creating and maintaining flow.

      I use romal reins but without chains. Acceptable?

      No. The rein chains help create a pre-signal that is not the same without them.

    Hauling horses a long ways... same as horseback isn't it? light with your hands, light with your feet. Learn to drive. Make sure they're watered. Feed them when they can relax and it's not blowing all over the trailer from a 70mph breeze and the hurricane blasts of a semi blowing past.
    Breathe. Slow down. Think of -yourself- Standing back there tied into a noisy, bouncing, tin, wind tunnel... You'll get a more harmonious outcome.

    Absolutely love watching yalls videos both the horse ones and even just the ones inside with Mr.Pat just spreading knowledge my favorite video is probably the spur strap video for that reason. Also does Mr. Pat know how to throw a rope loop that halters either the horse being picked out of the remuda or a steer in the arena if so could he possibly make a video educating how to throw such a loop.

    I’ve started several horses in the missing link snaffle and later I see these horses being ridden in some form of broken bit with shanks. My question is, how long would you ride a colt in the M L S before you transition to a ranch bit. I’m trying to help these people find a better way.

      The short answer is that when you can open a gate using one hand both directions, do the log exercise sidepassing both directions and separating the forehand and the hindquarters with one hand on the reins, and stop and back up off your seat from the walk and trot, you can go to the regular western bit. You can finish your work on collection in the western bit.

    Hi , I have read a few books by/about the long Riders and what I gain most is the humanity that most of our rural America has to extend a helping hand for a person on the road. I myself need a sure thing, so a Long Ride is Romantic, but not practical enough for this old girl. My most recent read, of a well thought out ride, was by Will Grant - -the Last Ride - -I recommend highly. He plans , is observant and he takes care of his horses . . Enjoy - - I really enjoy your answering questions Pat - - its great - - Like a "Fire Side Chat". Gratefully, Val in Colorado.

    Thank you!! LOL, those were good topics, i had wondered too! ! 😄 Especially the further romel rein info, and inside trailer dimensions, etc. I know you two are wondering why we would wonder, but for me, I'm trying to determine if there's enough room for him to turn around (if I leave him loose). I'm planning to remove the one divider in my 2h slant, to give him more room to turn if he's loose. I think I would feel more comfortable as well with more room if tying him. It also has a permanent left rear tack room, which i've decided I don't like as it impedes the avail space inside. I never dreamed this trailer configuration would be a problem, and this is my first problem loader horse, so I'm trying to work through this safely. Thank you for all your wisdom & knowledge on these topics, especially on traveling too & feeding, some was new info for me! I'm so happy you shared, as I had no one to consult with, so perfect!! 🙂

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Rear tack rooms aren’t good. They make it hard for horses to see behind them when unloading and claustrophobic when loading. If there’s any way to remove it, your horse will appreciate it. Besides I’ve never seen a rear tack that was practical for much of anything.

      You can take your trailer to a good welder and have him cut out the rear tack. You'll be surprised how much room Youll gain.

    Thanks for answer on the hauling question. The hot asphalt causes what the vet calls road founder.

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was my understanding that road founder is caused by the concussion of trotting and galloping on hard surfaces for extended periods.

      @@PatnDebPuckett the vet was talking of the local 4th of July parade in Novato ca one year, a hot year, a hot parade. The horses were standing on the asphalt awaiting their turn. The heat softened the hooves enough to allow a slight rotation of the bones in the hoves of some horses
      Anyway that's the back story to that. A good time was had by all, however I would not participate in that. A crippled horse is a crippled horse, slight or not, tends to haunt you. PS how do you spell HOVES, must be more that 10 ways.
