  • The Boyles have lived at Kelburn Castle on the Ayrshire coast since the 12th century and were once one of the wealthiest families in Scotland. The current occupant, Patrick Boyle, 10th Earl of Glasgow, believed that by creating a country park and opening up the castle for dinners and tours he could make Kelburn pay for itself, but he has lurched from one financial crisis to another.

The son, said to be an architect, should get a job. He is not lifting a finger to help his father. He is taking the disastrous situation very casually and laughing all the way to the precipice. The daughter seems to be the smart one in the family. She should be the one running the castle.

I thought the same thing. For his age he should've been in there with his cell phone putting that Easter egg hunt all over social media!!!! Come on dude...do better. I'm pretty sure he's clueless because his father has always figured something out...until now. He's sitting on top of a freaking stove to stay warm with the cats and laughing about it. And where are the ladies in these men's lives? I figured some narcissistic woman would've latched on to that aging land owner or his useless heir and turned it into some kind of reality show by now. I visited Lord Glasgow, at Kelburn Castle, twice, about 35-36 years ago, when I was Scottish Editor at Burke's Peerage. I admire his, and his family's, efforts to preserve this important part of Scottish heritage. These old castles (I owned one for a dozen years myself) are a money pit. That many old Scots families work so hard to preserve their family heritage, their clan heritage and the heritage of Scotland...at great expense and effort...is a positive thing. God bless them.

The whole point was supposed to be to restore/preserve the castle and it's long history. Seems to me they were more about wanting to preserve their privileged lifestyle...
And straight away the viscount (son) wanted to have the castle exterior covered in graffiti!?! They put all effort into gleaning support from others while doing not much more than selling off property. If it means so much to them, they could and should have taken a much earlier, aggressive and personal approach to confront the problem.

After watching this video I did a search to see what has happened to the castle. Well, the son managed to follow through with having murals painted all over the front. And though I am an artist, and art teacher, I can sincerely say the mural would be better in a public city park. It spoils the castle and looks hideous. Then I looked up weddings, but would have to send for brochures to see what the rooms look like. There were only two reviews form the wedding parties in 2019 and here it is 2022. Maybe there is another website...? There is no B&B, but you can stay in a yurt or a tent. There are other activities going on. It was disappointing to see no active promotion for weddings. Would love to know what happened to the New Zealand couple.

he's supposed to be an architect yet they seem to be funding some random bloke in a black jaguar car who shows up from time to time and they presumably pay him to come and state the obvious. 30K for a new kitchen!! To pass health and safety standards some off the shelf kitchen units would do, paint on the walls, aga probably only needs a de-coke, they go on for ever but they do needs some heavy level bottom pans that actually make contact with the hotplate. range cooker added plus double catering sink and dishwasher and a pantry room with plenty of larder fridges and big chest freezers. cheap and cheerful but a hygienic quick fix and they could do a lot of the work themselves. 15K max.

the documentary seemed a bit of a comedy! the estate in total is 3,500 acres of mostly moorland. i don't trust that Billy character - bit of a vulture? Why sell the land for development - the son is an architect (get a haircut) so why not develop it themselves, some 99 year leasehold and some rental properties, creating a lump sum and a cashflow after. if they can't get planning permission for houses then investigate the possibility of a solar farm. 30K for a new kitchen?? DIY and halve that. this docu was made in 2006 and a lot of restoration has been done since then but tripadviser are being mean and promoting negative reviews from 2013 ish whereas the more recent ones in small print are more favourable.

business and entreprenurial classes should be a requirement to inherit an aristocracy/estate. as the manager mentioned, its not the 1920s. is the 2020s. people have to be paid a living wage and estate owners need to know the business end of running those homes. it looks like now, the castle has had a bit of a turn around and gotten on their feet. but the depths that they had to pull up from are just nearly sinful. and its not just this earl's fault. the "good" earl that built the churches and put the estate into bankruptcy started a bad trend. at THAT POINT, they next earl should have pulled up his boots, put his big boy pants on, and did what was needed to get the castle back in the black; and should have been taught to each progressing earl.

The history of the castle is deep, very interesting and curious. But interiors and with graffiti now, ruined everything😔. When I hear about Medieval castle, I expect to see and feel the past, not the old house. Wish you guys all the best wishes

Sue has taken on an unrealistic position and acts the martyr. Cutting costs on staff, and herself willingly taking on extra duties for what? To make it seem the castle is making money so she gets her bonus. Choose wisely or accept the consequences.

The family motto "Dominus providebit" literally translates to "(The) Lord will provide" which could, depending on context, refer to either the Christian messiah or a feudal lord. :)

The Lord needs a *"Business Manager"* and the Daughter appears to be the wisdom in the family, the son (well, not my business).
To the Lord and his family:
*Learn the "Universal Law of Attraction", your Peerage all know this* 🔑
    It is the answer.
Then one wouldn't have to air their private business in public. I couldn't do this, and with such an obvious ... son.

    Utter cringeworthy cads-
    Father and son both.
Just seem buffoonish entitled trust funders and the family of freeloaders who come just to quaff and scoff.
Considering the father has had the property since the 70s- hes done clearly very little to the castle by way of effective upkeep and maintenence

If you want to fart around with art as a Duke then hire a damn estate manager! Generations of Boyles' have failed at preparing their sons for the role of Duke. An career in the arts for a Duke! and then the next hire (son) also followed the arts and sems clueless about what the future means for him. And I doubt he made it through architecture licensing.
