Yeah, that's something of an understatement.

I like the detail that the Mongol has studied the language and culture. Their mastery of diplomacy and espionage is something that tends to be forgotten, especially in fantasy pastiches like the Dothraki.
I really like the detail that the average grunt level Mongol soldier can manage to say Rice in Japanese.

    • @Volthoom
      @Volthoom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

Yup, liked that detail aswell. The Mongol Empire and their conquests are often portrayed as simple zergling rush in western media, while in reality they were a bunch of cunning, calculating bastards who always tried to get the most out of each and every victory.

Historically speaking, he'd be fulled with arrows way before he had the chance to finish identifying himself, because the Mongols didn't understand the concept of introducing oneself before duel.
At lest he got to finish his name here, but somehow it feels much worse.

If anyone watching this is interested in learning more about Japan, I recommend watching the TH-cam channel Metatron, he's an Italian who lived in Japan for years, studied Japanese culture and can speak very fluent Japanese (I think he even teaches it at his college in southern Italy). Covers a lot of stuff on Japanese, Roman and Medieval culture, weapons and history, in a very fun way.
He's also got a full and authentic set of Japanese lamelar armor, a huge no-dachi and a full suit of Roman armor too. Really cool TH-camr.

I might remember this wrong, but Samurai were military nobles, pretty much same as Knights in Europe. They supported King and King supported them. Japan had two leaders, Shogun (who wielded more power) and Emperor (who was more of figurehead).
Historically speaking, both Knights and Samurai behaved pretty much the same: Some were good, some were good for their people and some were closer to dictators for lands that they owned, depending on their current leader(Shogun or King), they might lean more on one end than other.
37:50 You are right on this, it is most used tactic by invaders to cause severe punishment not to person who attacks their soldiers, but to their home or people close to them to quell resolve to fight back. "Kill one of my men, i slaughter rest of your village"
39:54 Militaristic nobles(mostly men) were trained in politics and combat, farmers and such were main bulk of armies but they were far less trained and had to use what little money that had to buy their own equipments for war, they used most of their time tending their farms or running businesses. More Money = Better Equipment = Better chance of surviving, unless your opponent is more skilled in combat.
53:15 Sometimes Samurai could regain their honor from dishonorable acts, other times they were given paper, Feather used in Writing and a sword(specially made sword this situation). They were to write their last words, their will and commit seppuku (suicide by slicing their gut open) in order to restore his remaining honor for himself and his family.

I just did a little digging to find out that this happened two centuries before the creation of the Ashigaru. So seventy samurai makes sense and I just put my foot in my mouth.
As an answer to your question meritocracy did not become a thing until the official formation of, of course, the Ashigaru. Where a farmers' second or third born son could enlist in their daimyo's standing army as a full time soldier and, if they were to slay a samurai in battle then bring their head to their lord. That Ashigaru would be elevated and trained as a samurai.

I've been away from this channel for a hot minute, so it's time to start catching up! jk, I'm absolutely going to pick-and-choose series which appeal to me, but I'm very happy that these exist.
Also, in case you read this, fun(?) fact about samurai: "Samurai" was a social class, not a job description per se. A samurai could be given jobs to perform as a ninja - more of a job description and skillset - such as assassination and subterfuge. So, at 32:05 when Jin says that to slit the enemies' throats would be to kill them "without honor", that is a historically inaccurate romanticized version of samurai and Bushido. The romanticized version seems to be a political tool created and pushed by the Japanese government starting in the mid-1800s.
I recommend checking out The Metatron's youtube channel if you're interested in learning more, especially as far as reactions to Ghost of Tsushima in particular.

I know from watching Korean historical dramas, there's so much context that goes over my head. So I'm interested to see how an international studio does with this slice of Japanese history.
Just reading the Wikipedia page and it looks like a very interesting time. I guess I'm on the side of Japan despite being a Koreaboo; many Koreans fought on the side of the Mongols and basically were their navy (the Mongols invaded from Korea), but the building of that navy destroyed Korea's ability to defend itself against future invasions from Japan. Also it's not like it was the choice of the Koreans to go to war, since they were a vassal state of the Mongols. So I guess that makes the Mongols the baddies.

They were basically like knights from europe, with some differences; warriors employed as retainers to feudal landholders (arranged into clans, mostly based on lineage), a sort of lesser noble, above the peasant class. They were mostly paid with food/minor plots of land, and culturally it was considered beneath them to take on any other work than soldier, so a lot of peasants were needed to support even a single samurai.

The lip syncing issue with the Japanese dub is a bit of a shame but personally it's much preferable to having to hear the same handful of voice actors for every other NPC and their phony asian accents. No offense to the likes of Robbie Daymond or Noshir Dalal -- I love their work but I can still clock them instantly and it breaks my immersion for whatever reason. Probably because they are so prolific and voice so many other iconic characters in other games.
