Morning routines have always eluded me. But NOT THIS TIME! I tried getting up at 5am, exercising and running right away, meditating, cold showers, and all that good stuff. Did it help me be happier, more productive, a better husband and father, a better TH-camr, a better man?!?!?

But for me at least, it just gave me a depressive episode for a few months because my day was ruined after 11am since I had no energy. Even if I did nothing in the morning other than watch a movie. Do you drink coffee as soon as you wake up? I am new to waking up early and what I try to do is move around for at least 15 minutes before I drink coffee so by body can try to get rid of the sleepiness without the help of caffeine. This way, I am not as prone to crashing after the coffee stops working. I also drink water too as soon as I wake up.

The reason you hate the cold shower is that you always put your head under right away. Try my routine: First normal warm shower (soap needs warm water to work), then the cold one. Start the cold shower by counting to 30, slowly turning around. But not on the head! Then put your head under for a few seconds, no more. Repeat 3 times and ease out for the last 10 count for a total of 100 count. (count may be seconds, but I don't know because your sense of time slows. Yes, I have tested that). The problem is that you expose your (hairless) scalp too sudden and too long. Try it.
In the beginning I kept adding seconds every day until I was under the cold shower 5 minutes, but I found out that count 100 is the right amount for me. There is no gain beyond that besides losing time. Count to 100 is perfect, though.

YES. Some folks really do have a weird superiority complex about getting up at X early time, like it's morally better and everyone else is weak willed and lazy. Everyone's lives are different, and their sleep schedules reflect that.
For myself, I'm a night shift worker. I'm literally still at work at 5am. But when I get up at 2pm, somehow I'm a lazy person according to some. It's a strange obsession some folks have. As a recovering perfectionist, these thoughts help me a good deal.

It's the lure of instant gratification vs. delayed gratification. Example: if you eat a clean diet, you may have to wait a while before you begin to see changes in your body. But with that pizza or donut, gratification is just one bite away. Also, old habits and routines are deeply ingrained, so it is easy to fall back into them, like old wagon wheel ruts.

I love getting up early at about 4:30am and getting stuff done when I can. But my problem is making sure I go to bed early for at least 10pm... When you think about it, what do we do with our evenings? Usually we waste this time in chilling out in front of the TV because we have reached the end of our strength for that day. But when we give these wasted hours to the morning we do more healthier and productive things. Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.

The thing that trips me up in the evenings is meeting up with friends virtually, most of my IRL friends over the years have spread out to the point physically meeting up requires a lot of travelling so we've all taken to Discord and doing watch parties or playing games that go on into the night and then I'm buggered for going to bed and getting up early. What I really need is the day to be 26hrs long that way I can get enough sleep and get stuff done early and still have a day. Just realised this turned into a mini-rant, so thanks for reading that and I hope you have a grand day!

I think your morning routine sounds great for someone who works from home, and doesnt have to spend a long time on transportation. However, I did wonder about Aaaalll the steps - how long does it take? You run every morning AND work out? And meditate? AND journal? like... If I could just do one 15 minutes yoga session every morning I would be happy xD

People forget that the monks who make these routines have no true responsibilities and society won't come knocking on their door if they don't do something in time. These routines are for monks, and monks are using them to try and get others to relate to them. But that's inherently wrong

I don’t think big city folks realize that this is a routine possible almost anywhere outside of their massive metro areas. A 5 mile drive takes 5-8 minutes in my small city, so I could wake up at 6am and work out before I head to work.

Hi Craig, Happy Belated Birthday! I love your videos. I am a nurse who starts work at 6am so I get up at 5am. I get dressed while my coffee is brewing and my dog associates (like Pavlov's) the smell of coffee with her morning walk, so she waits at the front door, ready to go. We walk just a couple of block but it's always beautiful to look up at the moon and stars and realize how small we are in this vast universe. Anyhoo, Love your channel and keep up the good work!

Awesome Craig! thanks for putting things like this out. Your HIIT video inspired me to go do that and helped me break me out of a serious funk I was in. . Also, the cold shower thing is rough. It helped me to slowly get in; right arm, left arm, right leg, left leg, then get you body and head wet. A slower adjustment while in tune with the breathe makes it a little more bearable.

Continuing to do this through the seasons is difficult with the changing sun risings, but rewarding. 5am light snowfalls with no sound and then watching the sun come up are certainly something special, but just as much as the buzzing and early morning sense you get in the summer, especially around a campfire.

I watched this at 4 am pacific time, having not yet gone to bed. You have reawakened my desire to both go to bed, and get up early. In my late thirties I seem to have developed a certain strength of will that mid-twenties me always assumed would be there for me when I needed it. "I don't have to build that skill, I'll just turn it on when life demands it of me," I thought. Hmm . . . no, it seems. I am finding it easier to build new skills than I thought it would be, though. Have I wasted time not developing myself earlier, or am I now finding it easier to do so because I understand the significance and purpose of that development? How many years did I waste, or how many lessons do I draw upon, now? How many licks to the center of a tootsie pop? The world may never know.
. . . 3. Yes I know it was three, but there are no existential short cuts. The owl cheated.

For me, at least, changes in sleep patterns take a month or so to get used to which is why I HATE daylight saving time. I'm an every day 5am-5:30am waker upper, mostly due to my job starting at 6-ish and my pets being used to be getting up at that time to feed them/let them outside. This seems like an overkill morning routine. The ideal morning routine is just, doing the easy things, that you enjoy. The cold shower is bull SHIRT to me. Lol. I follow some of the High Five Habit stuff but also have my own blend that helps me get through my mornings. The evening routine is really key to making the morning go smoothers though too. Getting gym clothes out, making sure the coffee maker has water, prepping my gym bag with a full water bottle and making sure it has both of my workout shoes in it (running vs lifting shoes). I’m curious how you might change the routine (assuming you keep doing it) to better meet your own needs. I found after a week or two of building my morning routine I had to tweak a couple things.
