Great comparison, highlighting both the niggles as well as the plus features. I’ve had both Husky & Stihl ground helmets and the one thing I hate, is that you have to use two hands to close the Stihl defenders. Whereas you only need one hand to close the Husky defender. Basically, you have to either put the saw down or hook it and then deal with the Stihl defenders, as opposed to being able to continue to hold the saw and close the Husky defenders with your free hand.
All day comfort - I’d say they were about the same in cold weather. The Huskys are better vented for hotter weather. But oh my, the need to use both hands-defenders with the Stihl, is a deal breaker. The only reason I’ve used the Stihl, is that someone bought me one.
    Great comparison, thank you.

Thanks for the video! This was the deciding factor on which helmet to get. There are so many helmets out there and a lot of them actually have bad reviews so this was very helpful.

I think it might be helpful if you were more specific with the Stihl helmet model in your video. You have it listed and refer to it as the "Forestry" model but on the helmet in your video it says "Stihl Woodcutter". The Stihl Woodcutter helmet comes in the Stihl "Woodcutter Kit", the entire kit retails for around $150 and this kit comes with Woodcutter chaps (black, 6-ply), Woodcutter helmet system, protective eyewear, tool bag, luggage tag and carrying bag. Who sold you the helmet only for $120? Currently Stihl's most expensive helmet is the ADVANCE X-VENT Helmet System which retails for around $94, their next level down is the "Pro Mark™ Helmet System" which retails for around $74. I think Stihl packs a cheap helmet into this homeowners kit.
Your review offers valuable information into helmet construction and quality but you are way off the price point of the Stihl helmet.

I've been working in the woods for years with never having used a safety helmet. This last fall, i got binged in the head once and another time right on the end of my nose!! It's time to review my safety habits....

For anyone searching...That stihl helmet is $66 at your local Ace hardware or stihl dealer right now(6/1/24). They are the same price point. I bought that stihl years ago with ratcheting suspension and it has been great, I love it. The face shield is longer, yes the muffs snap in hard but are positive and keep noise out while moving. I recently needed a second helmet and chaps and cheaped out with the "Forester" brand basic helmet. It sucks, the muffs suck, don't stay up, even harder to snap onto your ear, and the visor doesn't stay up or down properly and is too short and you get hit in the neck with flying debris. I should have bought another Stihl.

Do you think I could mount my Milwaukee red lithium battery headlamp on the Husqvarna helmet? Would the face shield clear it? We had some storms the other night at 3 am and the headlamp was essential while helping clear some trees down. Thanks

  • @rwrp

My Oregon helmet has a long screen like the Stihl, but with a visor and coarser mesh like the Husqvarna, but stiffer than the Husqvarna. It has a ratchet and better suspension. You wouldn’t like the tension of the ear cups on and off, I just lift them back. It’s also yellow and is closer in price to the Husqvarna. I actually put wireless 3m work tunes on the wire arms, haven’t used them yet, but if I were doing a lot of easier bucking at home I might, also If I needed to hear an alert or call in an emergency, I could have it announce callers and decide to stop saw and answer or not. As it was, I felt the vibrations from my phone in my pocket and I’d have to check who it was if I was expecting a call about something important.

    • @rwrp
      @rwrp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Re checked, It’s less than the husqvarna for the one I chose. I wanted the wire arms to match the work tunes. The Oregon pro is priced like the Husky and is orange.

Nice comparison. I would agree that the Stihl is overpriced. However I have a Husqvarna Technical Forest Helmet that has a similar looking design for the muffs and the muffs fall off sometimes when I adjust them or bump them. It started slowly but not often enough for me to take it in under warranty (1 year). I thought I was not doing something right. But now after nearly 3 years of cutting a cord or two of firewood each year and occasional tree felling, the muffs fall off even more frequently. This is very annoying. There is a parts kit one can purchase but I hate to spend more good money after bad especially if it's the same design. So if you get one of these and if anytime before the warranty expires the muffs seem to detach unexpectedly, make sure to get it in for warranty repair. Have you heard of this problem?

For what it’s worth I don’t have experience with the Husky helmet, however the suspension system I do. Kinda funny but I’m an underground coal miner with 10+ years experience. The hardhat of choice for us is a brand called “low pro”. Here’s the cool part. The Husky liner slides right in and fits perfectly. Who discovered it remains a mystery lol. But you won’t find a miner wearing a low pro without the Husky liner.

After watching your video I purchased the Husqvarna model. I really like it but the "IKEA type" of picture instructions for assembly were a confusing mess. I searched on TH-cam and found a short video on the assembly of the helmet. Then it took only 5 minutes to completely assemble and adjust. Thanks for your comparison video. It made my mind up and saved me a lot of money.

I own one. It's much more comfortable than most other helmets I've used. My only gripe is that the ear protection won't stay attached. After a few light uses, it popped of when I tried to flip the hearing protection up to have a conversation. I popped it back in place, but it would pop off almost every time I moved. I complained to Husqvarna, and they sent replacement hearing protection to my local dealer.
I used my old helmet for months, then pulled out the new one. It worked for about 4 or 5 days of cutting, then that one popped off. I was now out of warranty, but the helmet was so comfortable that I called Husqvarna to ask if they had fixed the problem, thinking if they had, I would order a new one and save the first one for hot weather use (when I wear ear plugs). To my surprise, the offered to send me a whole new helmet. I used the new one off and on over the course of a few weeks, totaling 5 or 6 days (4 to 8 hours per day), when one of the ear pieces popped off. In nosing around back then, I found that my problem was a fairly common one. Many people had no problem, but as soon as one popped off once, you just could not count on it to stay.
I still really want to like this helmet - it's that comfortable, but I need one where the hearing protection is reliable. My experience was 2-3+ years ago, so it's possible they have fixed the design since then.

With cutting somewhat frozen wood. 12 - 16 inch rounds I get about 6 cuts out of one battery. I will be looking into a STIHL gas chainsaw. I just got a wood stove and now am trying to take down any viable blow downs. I gave the chain teeth a few swipes with the file last attempt. Not much experience here with saws. Could be me.

@@TheDurbinCompound It's about the equivalent of a decent 40cc gas chainsaw. It will never replace my larger saws, but it sure is handy for jobs in its size range. The quiet is a bonus. That Stihl is overpriced. Both are relatively nasty base models I would not consider because I've tried and used several. If you just have to go with the minimum protective features, it should not cost more than the cheaper option shown here - and it's probably fairly good for its price.
Wire mesh visors are not not transparent enough or acceptable for actual work nor do they actually offer much protection from more than chips. There are better options for not that much more - including the Stihl product range - with a more comfortable interior, better hard hat design and/or etched sheet metal visor. If you wanted to include BT connectivity, Stihl becomes very affordable in comparison and Husqvarna is a bit more expensive option. At least by EU pricing.
