very new to model railways but i already know the shunting is where i will have the real fun. id like to create a real maze of points and make it lots of fun. Thats what it's all about to me! great little vid, thanks for taking the time to share.

I love this sort of thing. This is a part of the hobby I just can't get enough of.

+David Jackson Have you made one David? Sounds as if you have. I've only just begun and it is quite interesting doing this. It could easily be part of a regular layout that has loops and all the rest of the track, so you get the best of both worlds that way. Do you reckon I need more weight in the wagons? I think I do, so I've ordered some Liquid Gravity - video coming soon all being well. Laurie.

This reminds of the railroad shunting game on the Internet that I used to play

+kevintregunna Same with me. Always worried I'd make a fool of myself. But then tried it with a pack of cars representing wagons and understood the principle. Good fun.

Confusing at first Laurie but makes perfect sense as you go along and a nice bit of fun!

Brilliant fun! I had a plan involving a small mining layout with The Busch small track system.. It would be great to include the possibility to play this game too..

+Matthew Snowden Perhaps more weight in the wagons too? Cheers, Matthew. Laurie.

Methinks the problem with the derailing of and failure to couple the wagons is that they are too light. I think both troubles will almost vanish if you can get them heavier. We have NMRA standards here in North America, and their recommended weights are pretty good. You can even go heavier, but not lighter, to be safe. Sorry, I don't know if you have OO scale standards of a similar nature, and if you don't maybe the NMRA standards will work for you, too. I bet they will be pretty good, though.

      +avlisk That's a great tip - I'll try that. Cheers.

Looks good to me! The best online reference for rules and information on Inglenook shunting puzzles is the www.wymann.info site, which shows some models too. Inglenook (and other shunting puzzles) are brilliant fun. I'm building an extended Cornish Inglenook layout, at present but like you I had to throw together a simpler layout on some board just to have a play! For those who have iPhones/iPads there's also a great animated Inglenook game called 'Tiny Trackz' on iTunes, available for a few pounds, but 'real' models are always the best. I think a Welsh (narrow gauge?) Inglenook would add character, and you could perhaps add extra optional rules such as 'loco can't go past this point on this siding (or through the goods shed)', 'cattle wagons can't go on the coal siding', etc. Infinite variations - thanks for sharing. Alan

All does depend on good couplings . Wagons tend to re-couple when pushed which is annoying .

how about adding a guards van which could start off in the middle but has to end up at the end

      Thanks.Layout is working fine now.
We have fun playing with it. I can carry it to friends place!
Average time is 15 min, 6 to 18 moves.
All rolling stock and loco are 6 inches long, the reason for the size of the layout.
(with 6 in wagon and loco, (5+1+3)x6inch + 10 in switch= 64 in long total)
(with 4 in wagon and loco, (5+1+3)x4inch + 10 in switch= 46 in long total)

I just build a Inglenook myself, on 2 pièces of 24x36 inches, it is portable this way.But I have hard time to solve it. The way you did, I think is wrong. But it is tempting to go away on your oval... in fact at the beginning, you showed the siding with 5 and the 3 and the oval being the third holding 3. So your oval cannot hold more than 3 wagons, it is not the goal. The goal is the siding holding 5 that is supposed to be rearranged into the order draw of the papers.(I took my info on:www.wymann.info/ShuntingPuzzles/Inglenook/inglenook-trackplan.html)Easy to say, hard to do...I am still struggling, trying to do it on a smaller scale... like 3 on the main and 2 on one siding and 2 space on the third...The full one is 8 wagons, with 5,3,3, and smaller is 6 wagons, with 4,2,2and the smallest 5 wagons with 3,2,2...I am looking at a disciplined method to follow to solve it!I will put the pictures of my Inglenook layout on flickr and include it in a comment later on.Thanks for your video.

I found more stratégies on this page www.wymann.info/ShuntingPuzzles/Inglenook/inglenook-strategy.html

    • @luke_atthat
      @luke_atthat 8 ปีที่แล้ว

After reading the strategies in the link I provided, I must apologize, you were right and following correctly the rules! I did not understand them!
On my Inglenook layout, I had the full 5 cars in the proper order, 2 with the loco and 3 in the middle sinding, ready to be coupled and go on the main line...
But I tought they would have to be parked on the long siding of 5 rooms... In fact, this would be impossible... The goal is to leave with a train with 5 cars in the order chosen. So I got it now and it is reasonnably feasible.
Thank again, that's your video that challenged me to find the answer!

Yes Luc I don't quite do mine on the traditional way but there are no hard and fast rules. For example the size of the original is 4x1ft. So yours is too big assuming you are 00 or Ho scale. But that is fine. There are in fact many variations on this theme, and many types of shunting puzzle. So have fun, whatever you do. Cheers, Laurie.

I fully accept that we should all operate these shunting puzzles the way we see fit, but the one aspect that I do disagree with is timing it. Because it is being done against the clock, the moves are carried out at ridiculous speeds and rates of acceleration. Watching a shunting loco edge up to a wagon until the coupling just snicks into place, waiting for moment whilst the loco in theory engages reverse gear, and then crawling away with the wagon can look wonderfully nostalgic. I spent lots of time as a boy back in the 50's watching scenes similar to this, and operating a small shunting layout brings back many memories. I realise that an Inglenook layout is far from prototypical, but one's mind can fill in what's missing and ignore what's wrong. Love it!

Perry Hampson I agree. When I operate my Inglenook, I take the time to enjoy the coupling uncoupling, diesel noise, air noise.
I only count the number of moves.
But lately, my wife and I, did not even count the moves.
When I do it alone, I REALLY take my time!
