    So RBG died and just as Renegade Cut said, Trump replaced her with an anti-choice judge, in this case, a woman from the same organization that directly inspired The Handmaid's Tale.

    To be honest, I haven’t been able to watch ‘the Handmaid’s Tale’ since the end of the first season. It was masterful filmmaking, but it just feels too close to home right now. It barely even feels fictional anymore.

    Thank you for explicitly including trans men - we're so often left out of discussions of reproductive health (and a lot of other discussions, tbh; people sorta forget we exist). It just... it meant so much to me to hear "their numbers are relatively small, but that does NOT make them insignificant." Thank you, comrade.

    I always wanted a strict pro-life defendant to explain why a bodily autonomy argument doesn’t cover abortion. If my daughter needed just a small transfusion of my blood, and I didn’t want to give it to her, all lawmakers and doctors believe in my ability to withhold my blood. My daughter would die, and no doctor would force me to save her. Why is that so different before she is born?

    • @literallygaston2489
      @literallygaston2489 5 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Nathan Seper Well that’s not the same thing. Your child being vaccinated has nothing to do with your bodily autonomy. It has more to do with a being a legal guardian of a child and making decisions for them, which I have very mixed feelings about tbh.

    • @faristasairuv5143
      @faristasairuv5143 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I get what you’re trying to say, but that’s a terrible argument. I don’t mean this in bad faith. Your argument I not helping your cause (and your cause is the same as my cause).
      1) Your daughter is a living person, not a fetus
      2) Donating blood is not nearly as invasive as being pregnant and giving birth is. It doesn’t affect your physical, mental, emotional, and social health nearly as much. It doesn’t affect your life, your future, and your dreams. It doesn’t have stigma attached to it. Being forced to give big can destroy nearly every aspect of your being. It’s not the same.

      At the end of the day it's all about power and control. In this modern and (relatively) more equal society, pregnancy stands as one of the remaining few things that still allow men some power over women (in a way and let my explain). Conservatives still prescribe to the idea that a woman's fundamental purpose is taking care of children. So when a woman gives birth, she must dedicate her time and energy to caring for the child which makes her reliant on her husband to provide money and shelter. This reliance is what creates the power imbalance that conservative men crave. By allowing women their own autonomy, the power imbalance in that particular scenario ceases (or diminishes greatly) and we all know how conservative men feel about losing power. It's less about the life of the baby, and more about how conservatives can use that baby to control women, because if they truly were so pro-life, why do those same folks hate the idea of medical care for all, social welfare programs, and increased funding for education?

I gave up a while ago when I realised how empty, toxic and heartless the patriarchy brigade is when I asked how the baby and its mother are to survive should something happen to the "provider". "Don't tone women."
    THANK YOU.
    This is why many anti-choice people don't understand WHY abortion needs to be available. They have no idea, nor are they interested in, why some women NEED this option. They have no interest in learning that women have their own plans and their own reasons and their own happenings in their own lives. You do not get to force a woman to have a baby when there is no family support for her, when having that child will cement the cycle of poverty in that family, when a woman's mental health is at risk, when there is abuse that cannot be ignored, when single mothers are vilified as selfish or irresponsible, when the government programs that do cling to existence are under massive attack by the same people who want to force women to have a baby they cannot support!
    If you cannot understand that other people have different circumstances than you, then you cannot claim to have empathy or compassion.

A part of me wants to try to go back to the US and organize and protest while the other half of me is scared and thinks it would be safer just to remain in Canada, although I'm not even entirely sure that's safe from how politics have been going here as well. I don't think you should despair. To say women are fighting a losing battle is not true. We should fight all the more. Giving birth cannot be the all and be all. Bringing a baby into the world is not the child's play that some men think it is. There need to be an inexhaustible supply of resources to ensure that the child will have a decent life and not struggle. Outside that, its plain immoral to birth it. Also, men are not eternal and they also have shorter lives than women so all the more reason for women to fight on because we are the one who need more resources to fund the long lives. All the very best to you. Stay strong.

    To me all these laws are less about the preservation of life and more about the control of women, both of their bodies and their behaviors. Punishing women for daring to have sex. I don't personally believe abortion is right - but I am Christian, and my own religion says that it is NOT my right to judge or control others, or to look down on them for their decisions. So it angers me that these people in various state legislatures dare to pass such terrible, restrictive, dangerous laws that will only result in women having to look to black market, illegal, dangerous alternatives.
    If these state lawgivers actually cared, as they claim, about the life of the mother and child, then every penny of the money being pulled from abortion clinics should be going to pre and post natal care, childcare, schools and other amenities. There should be a heavy crack down on deadbeat dads who don't pay for the upkeep of their children and the hammer should come down on rapists, garnishing their wages to support any children that they sire with their crime.
    But no. This is about controlling women's behaviour, discouraging them from 'immoral' acts, and considering how some men (and women!) will bend over backwards to excuse the actions of young men who sexually harass and even rape women, it is the most disgusting of double standards.

    • @lizzyisbored9882
      @lizzyisbored9882 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exactly it infuriates me that the conservative Christians around me don't understand that these politicians don't really care about these women and the babies they are being forced to birth. These are the same politicians that actively punish people who are not wealthy for having children by killing social programs to help parents. If they really wanted to lower abortions they would take rape victims seriously and not reinforce "boys will be boys" which is an excuse many conservatives near me use when a male is sexually inappropriate. They finally need to start funding pre school, school, matarinety leave, not make it so expensive to have give birth in a hospital, create programs to make birth control and sterilization more accessible etc.

    Thank you for this. It made me cry, but it’s worth it.
    I’m Australian. A Queenslander, to be specific. And it was only last year that my state legalised abortion. So until 2018, abortion was a criminal act in my state. It’s still a crime in New South Wales.
    The opposition party had a policy of introduction abortion into Medicare (our universal healthcare system) and making it so that women could get abortions from public hospitals, instead of having to pay hundreds or thousands to private clinics. It would also mean that poor women, and women in regional areas would be able to access abortion- something very difficult even in states where it’s legal.
    Some women have to get up the money to travel thousands of kilometres (because Australia is a very large country), pay for accomodation in a major city, and then also pay a private clinic for that abortion. Having hospitals offer terminations would cut most of that travel down to less than a quarter (because it’s easier to travel to a regional town than a major city), and also even cut accomodation costs, as well as the cost of the abortion itself.
    But Labor lost. And so, abortion is still difficult and expensive in most of the country. And while you can access abortion in NSW (and Qld prior to legalisation), it’s via a common law workaround, and also means that many doctors aren’t willing to perform abortions because it is still a grey area legally.
    There’s also the fact that our conservative government LOVES America. They want to take us down the American path of healthcare and other public services (by stealthily privatising things). And our Prime Minister is a Pence type. Exceedingly religious, and outright anti-choice.
    Australians watch what is happening in the States with fear. I stand in solidarity with my sisters and trans brothers all over the world who are unable to access reproductive healthcare. Who are jailed for decades for having miscarriages. Where children who have been raped are forced to carry pregnancies at extremely tender ages. I also want to note that I realise that American people don’t have free choice now- not even in their most liberal states or cities. They don’t have universal healthcare, affordable education, a social security system that actually provides for families, affordable childcare, or a loveable minimum wage.
      There would have been millions who chose abortion simply because they knew they could not financially afford a(nother) child. And that’s not free choice. (It’s also not something the antichoice conservatives seem to care all that much about, funnily enough).
      But I recognise that for people to have a truly free choice, these things must be available. I think that as pro-choice activists, we must fight for these things, as well as for things like affordable contraception and medically accurate and holistic sex and relationships education. Because people cannot choose freely without these things- and that’s what we are supposed to be about... Choice. Access to abortion alone isn’t good enough, if people are forced to choose abortion because of material conditions, that’s not a free choice.

    Omg, this is an extremely necessary video for people to see. And thank you for mentioning trans people! They so often get left out of this conversation, and that's not fair. Any reproductive rights denied to cis women are reproductive rights denied to trans and nonbinary people with uteruses too.

      Walter Lopez That’s a bit of a stretch. If you’re from Poland it’s fairly known that the Soviet regime was ended fairly peacefully through protests and gentle resistance, while most violent Polish uprisings ended up making things worse for us, Warsaw Uprising being probably the biggest failure for a multitude of reasons. I’m not saying that violent protests should never happen, but I don’t like dismissing pacifism.

    We are indeed. In Italy as well now more than ever before; we have the law but also doctors that can legally choose not to perform abortion on you due to their religion. It's 85% of them in all the country, very difficult to have info and the procedure itself, especially if you live in the south or far from big cities like Milan, Bologna, Turin ecc. This video is precious, thanks!

    • @ateisate7270
      @ateisate7270 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same here in Germany. It goes further that a doctor is not allowed to "advertise" that they do abortions. This includes a note on their website among other medical procedures they peform or information about abortions in general (on the other hand shitheads are allowed to spread misinformation about abortions). Some of the german states have public lists with doctors doing abortions. In others you might have to drive a couple of hours. Also, mandatory waiting period after mandatory consultation not at your doctor. Also, on the books, it's still illegal, it just does not carry a penalty under certain circumstances.

    With regards to building codes, the reason hospitals are built differently than clinics is not necessarily due to the work that is done there, but the fact that hospitals are considered to be "post-disaster buildings". This means in case of a, well, disaster, the hospital needs to still be functional and can be used as a refuge or shelter, while clinics do not. Post-disaster buildings also include fire and stations, and power plants. Schools usually fall in a "middle" category, as they might not need to function after a disaster, but they are often used as shelters.

    I blame Obama for not making Merrick Garland and about 20 other judicial, recess appointments. For years #MoscowMitch had been slow rolling his appointments, many federal benches were down several Judges because of this. Obama either ignorantly wanted to be "bipartisan" or was worried about his legacy. Fact is, the recess appointments would have stood, in large part because there is precedent but also because the Supreme Court traditionally would hesitate taking any case that dealt with Legislature procedures. Do National Republicans and their statehouse minions deserve the lions share of the blame? Of course! However, be warned. The National Democratic Party continues and uses their donations to field an intramural flag football team to compete with the Republican NFL squad, being out maneuvered, overpowered and hoping the referee will make a call. While not realizing there is no referee, and it is entirely incumbent on them to assemble a better team to play the game before them.

    Good video as always Leon.
    I watched both the movie and season 1 of the tv show and I've read and like Atwoods books. There are many things that the show gets rights such as how patriarchy is perpetuated by men and upheld by women. However, there are lots of things that are incredibly problematic including as many have noted like the "torture porn". Most people have commented that its very popular with white female audiences precisely because it centres a white woman thus viewed through "spectre of white womanhood". Others have also pointed out that for African women this may be a cautionary tale because enslaved women were raped, forced to breed children and had their women taken away from them to be sold. I don't plan on watching the rest of the series.
